Last year a bunch of Gravity Falls fans got together for an ambitious project. Biased on nothing but a fan theory about who the author of the journals would turn out to be, we created some great content before the project fell apart.

Brought together in one post for the first time, here is what the mtanimate team managed to create. Please enjoy this au where Stan’s brother created the journals with the help of both Stan and Fiddleford.

Warning: this project was started before A Tale of Two Stans came out. Until that episode aired, we believed Grunkle Stan was called Stanford. That’s way, in the videos, Stan is called Stanford and the author of the journals is called Stanley.

Rejected second episode of Mystery Trio Lost Tapes – Gremloblin

As some of you know, last year I was a part of the MTanimate team. We were trying to make a Gravity Falls fan series based on the then popular theory that Stan’s mysterious brother had written the journals (which was right) and that he, Stan and Fiddleford ‘Old Man’ McGucket worked together in the 80’s fighting monsters and building portals (which was wrong).

We managed to make a trailer and one audio episode here. You’ll notice that the names for Stan and Ford are the wrong way around and that’s because it was made before ‘A Tale of Two Stans’ came out.

Then the writers had a few Skype meetings where we came up with a beta sheet for what should happen in the second episode. I volunteered to write a rough draft of the episode that we could all work on and improve together. I was asked to complete the script before the next episode – A Tale of Two Stans – came out. This would be in six days time so I quickly wrote this script.

Then the episode came out and disproved the Mystery Trio theory. I’d got as far as swapping the names around in my script so that they were the right way around, when I was told we wouldn’t be using my script because the characters were ooc and it was too dialogue heavy with not enough action.

I was fine with this and offered to help with whatever script we eventually went with. Unfortunately, one thing led to another and eventually the project fell apart. My personal theory about why things fell apart, other than people not having enough time, is that a lot of people lost interest once they knew that the Mystery Trio had never been a thing. I was happy enough to call it an au and keep working on it but enthusiasm had generally dropped and nothing ever got done.

So, even though it was never going to get used, this is the closest to a second episode that we will probably get. If the project ever starts again, I’d really love to help. Since that seems very unlikely, here is the script I wrote.

Is there a reason that this project stopped production? Can you give us more information beyond "oh yeah we're not doing it anymore." Did people quit? Do you not have enough artists? Animators?

Quite frankly energy on the project slowly dwindled until there was nothing. But it was a volunteer project; people had other shit to deal with in their own lives. It was really fun while it lasted, but it’s a TON of work to get something like what we had originally conceived to come into being. I think that was our downfall in the end. That and timezones.

But I mean hey we had a small team manage to produce one Lost Tape so I’d call that a win.

Sorry to everyone who was hyped about this.

No one else seems to be replying and all of yall poor souls keep sending messages, so I’m making a post. MTAnimate is currently not at work. Animations and the like are not being created currently, though there’s no certainty as to say that it won’t start up again in the future. I’m sorry if yall feel let down or disappointed. Maybe in the future it’ll revive.

So given the recent revelations, how far would you say the AU has diverged from the canon?

Completely. In canon there is no evidence the Mystery Trio existed. In fact, it doesn't seem like Stan even knew McGucket, or at least didn't know what he was like before the incident. If Stan had any encounters with Fidds it must've been after his brother was gone and well into the Society's work erasing minds (and therefore well into McGucket's insanity).But I mean, those are just my personal thoughts.-Kaylynn

Not necessarily. Had Ford gone to West Coast Tech, he wouldn’t have met Fiddleford.

With the new Tale of Two Stans preview, it's relieved in hand-painting that the six fingered twin is Stanford and the five fingered one is Stanley? If you guys make more of these (and I hope you do because they're FANTASTIC) are you just going to go with the names you've already established, or are you going to change them for the next tape?

That is an excellent question. I'm honesty not sure because either way it will be a little confusing, plus as a whole project we haven't discussed it. Personally, based on the Tale of Two Stans trailer it doesn't seem like the Mystery Trio was anything close to how everyone imagined it -- if it even existed at all (again that's my opinion based on the trailer, others may feel differently). If it wasn't a thing then technically, in the "Mystery Trio AU" that has been established for a while, the names we currently use are correct. It really depends if we want to stick with the show or the AU. I'm sorry that I don't have a definitive answer, but once we all decide what we want to do then we will make an announcement about it.-Kaylynn
