When their bodies finally hit the bed, they were exhausted, but sleep refused to come.
They tossed and turned in painful, awkward silence - because what the hell were you supposed to say after something like that?
Y/n wanted to apologize, but at the same time, she couldn't shake the feeling that she had every right to be upset. After all, Vicky had spent the entire night flirting with someone else.
But then again... why was she so jealous?
On top of that, the numerous shots of tequila still buzzed through her system, making it even harder to untangle the mess in her head.
Vicky wasn't doing much better either. She wanted to understand what had just happened, but to be honest, she barely understood her own thoughts anymore - and that scared her.
The thought of Vicky leaving soon finally got the better of y/n, just as the birds started chirping outside.
"No quiero pelear contigo, eres mi mejor amiga. And I freaked out because I miss you... It's really hard not seeing you every day like I used to," she said quietly, finally turning towards Vicky, who was lying on her back.
You see, she wasn't lying.
But was she telling the whole truth?
"Yo también te extraño mucho... But please don't lash out at me like that. Just talk to me if something's bothering you. I'm here."
Vicky could still feel there were some words left unsaid, but hearing that was enough to ease some of the weight off her chest.
After a few seconds, y/n quietly shuffled closer.
Without a word, Vicky slipped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer, until y/n's head rested on her chest. Her fingers slowly disappeared into her hair, combing through it in an attempt to calm her down.
Years ago, this didn't mean anything - no hidden feelings, no second thoughts.
At least that's what they both believed back then.
Now, it felt like complete peace and a full-blown emotional tornado all at once.
Eventually, exhaustion won, and they fell asleep wrapped in each other's arms.
*
When y/n finally woke up in the afternoon, Vicky was still asleep beside her.
She looked so peaceful - long eyelashes, freckles scattered across her face, lips slightly parted in her sleep. The few tiny braids were still in her hair, somehow making her look even cuter.
Y/n smiled quietly before getting out of bed, her head pounding from last night's drinks.
After swallowing an Advil, she went over to the fridge, only to remember it was basically empty.
With a sigh, she threw on a hoodie and headed to the store.
As she walked, fragments of the previous night surfaced - as usual, she had gotten way more drunk than she planned to.
She remembered laughing, tequila, the loud music...
And Vicky dancing with that blonde girl.
That memory left an uncomfortable knot in her stomach, but she couldn't remember much after that. Whatever happened later was buried beneath the alcohol.
The chilly afternoon air helped clear her head a little, and she made her way back to the dorm.
"Good morning Sunshine. I brought food, so you better wake your ass up," she laughed after finding Vicky exactly where she had left her, still in bed.
A long sigh escaped Vicky's lips as she stretched dramatically.
For a brief second, y/n completely lost her train of thought as the movement made the muscles in Vicky's arms flex beneath her oversized shirt.
"My head feels like it's about to fall off... What did we even drink?" Vicky groaned, her voice still rough with sleep.
"What did we not drink is a better question."
She smirked, plopping back onto the bed beside her with the bags of food.
Little by little, Vicky's memories started returning.
Not all of them. Just enough.
She wasn't sure how much y/n remembered, so she chose to leave the subject alone. Everything finally felt... normal again, and she never wanted to lose that.
Yet every few minutes, her mind drifted back to that tiny bathroom.
The way y/n's eyes had kept flickering between Vicky's lips and her eyes, only centimeters apart.
The memory refused to leave her alone.
*
After "breakfast" they decided to get out of the dorm for a small walk, before they had to say goodbye once again.
They wandered through the streets without much of a plan, stopping every few blocks whenever something caught their attention.
"Remember when you got lost trying to find Central Park a few days ago?" Vicky laughed.
"Excuse me? We got lost."
"No, you got lost. I just happened to be with you."
Y/n rolled her eyes dramatically before lightly bumping her shoulder against Vicky's.
It earned the exact smile Vicky had been hoping for.
She caught herself staring again - it happened without thinking.
Every few minutes, her eyes drifted back to y/n's face while she talked, laughed, or complained about the ridiculous price of coffee.
Stop looking at her like that, just forget it already.
She tore her gaze away, pretending to study the menu outside a café instead.
By the time they made it back to the dorm, the sun was already starting to disappear behind the buildings.
Y/n dropped her bag onto the floor, and immediately collapsed onto the bed.
"I don't want to leave yet." Vicky smiled softly.
"You say that every time."
"Because it's true every time."
Vicky turned towards the mess of clothes they left scattered around the room. "Come on, help me pack."
"I thought you were good at doing things yourself."
"I am, you're just more useful."
"Wow how romantic."
"Don't get excited."
Y/n laughed and reached for one of Vicky's shirts, inspecting it. "You're taking this?"
"Obviously."
"Why? You have multiple of these."
"Yeah, but this one is lucky."
"Lucky?"
Vicky shrugged. "You like it."
Y/n paused for half a second, not saying anything, before throwing it into the bag.
They continued packing, occasionally stealing things from eachother's piles just to annoy the other.
At one point, y/n was kneeling beside the open suitcase, trying to force the zipper closed. "It doesn't fit."
"Because you're terrible at packing."
"Then you do it."
Vicky crouched down beside her. "Move."
"I can do it."
"Clearly." She reached around y/n and placed her hands over hers on the zipper. "Pull."
Y/n did, and the suitcase finally closed.
But neither of them moved.
Vicky was still crouched beside her, close enough that y/n could feel her breath against the side of her face.
"See?" Vicky murmured. "Easy."
Y/n turned her head slightly, their faces were suddenly much closer than either of them expected.
For a second, neither spoke. Vicky's eyes flickered down, just for a moment.
Y/n noticed. Her heart skipped a beat.
"You know..." V started, her voice quieter now, "you could just admit you needed my help."
"Don't push your luck."
A small smile tugged at Vicky's lips. "I'm always right."
"That's definitely not true."
"Most of the time."
"Still not true."
Y/n tried to stand, but her bestfriend was still in the way. "Move."
"Ask nicely."
"Victoria..."
"That wasn't nice."
"Please move."Â Y/n rolled her eyes, but she was smiling.
Vicky finally shifted aside, laughing. "There. Happy?"
"Very."
Y/n grabbed the last few things from the bed, pretending she hadn't noticed the way her pulse was still beating a little too fast.
"So when's the next time I'll see your ass?" V asked while checking the room one last time.
"I mean, I really have to study for my exams, but after that I'm all yours in the summer," y/n smiled. "I can't wait to be back home. I miss the beach, Mari and Mauro, the parties, the sun... Everything."
She sat down on the bed, and Vicky joined her, already dressed and ready to leave.
"I promise we'll have the best summer of our lives."
She pulled y/n into a lazy hug. "Now get me to the airport before I start crying."
*
And just like that, they found themselves back at the airport once again.
Saying goodbye never gets easier.
"Fuck, I hate this part," V laughed, but the sadness in her eyes gave her away as she searched y/n's face.
"Let's just get it over with before I start begging you to stay here with me," y/n joked.
But they both knew there was more truth in those words than either of them wanted to admit.
She wrapped her arms tightly around her bestfriend, the familiar scent instantly filling her nose.
Vicky hugged her back just as tightly.
Neither of them seemed willing to be the first one to let go, y/n felt Vicky's fingers slowly curl into the fabric of her hoodie.
And then -
It hit her.
The tiny bathroom.
V standing impossibly close.
The way y/n's gaze dropped to her lips.
The way neither of them moved.
For a second, the airport disappeared around her.
The noise. The people. The boarding announcements. Everything.
Y/n's breath caught. Oh my God.
It wasn't something her drunk mind had invented?
And if she remembered it correctly... Did Vicky remember it too?
She slowly pulled back from the hug, her eyes immediately finding Vicky's.
Vicky looked at her for a second, and something in her expression changed.
But neither of them said a word.
Y/n's heart was pounding so hard she was convinced Vicky could hear it.
She forced herself to look away, she'd deal with it later in the safety of her dorm. She had to.
"Te veo ahorita, Victoria."
"MuchĂsimos besitos, mi nena."
Y/n watched her disappear into the slow moving line of passengers.
Every few seconds, V glanced back over her shoulder, as if she wanted to make sure y/n was still there.
She always was.
And just before reaching the security gate, Vicky stopped and turned around one last time.
Their eyes met across the crowded terminal.
Neither of them smiled this time.
They simply looked at each other for a few quiet seconds that somehow felt longer than the few days they had spent together.
V blew her a kiss.
Y/n copied the gesture.
And then she disappeared behind the corner.
Y/n stayed exactly where she was - people brushed past her, luggage wheels rattling, boarding calls echoing through the terminal.
She couldn't move.
Only after several minutes did she finally let out a shaky breath and reach for her phone.
"Text me when you landđź’“"
She stared at the message for a long moment before pressing send.
And as she walked towards the exit, the memory hit her again.
Did that really happen? Please let it just be the tequila.
