I absolutely cherish the love of photography and am about to graduate high school and pursue my love of photography. What is bothering me is that i have no clue if i can at least be able to make a living off of it, I'm not in it for the money or to be rich, i just don't want to be red handed and end out broke or failure. Coming from you I've been watching all your work for the past couple years and have picked up my camera everyday, i just wonder, Van, if you could give me some pointers man

First off most people never know for sure if they are even going to be able to make a living at something they love to do. But that is the whole point of life. If everything we decided to do had a guaranteed end result I think living would be boring. A big part of what makes doing what you love for a living is the journey you had to take to get to that point. I think you just need to believe in yourself and follow what feels right to you. Just try not to put so much pressure on you making a living from photography, it might take the joy out of doing it. 

Remember noting in life is permanent. If it doesn’t work out one way it can always work out another. But I always say better to go for something. Succeed or fail at least you went for it. Most people live their whole life with an idea of what they want to do and most never act on it.

But how you gonna say something like that? Not everyone is your age and not everyone has to learn the "history of photography" the way you did. Some people get inspired different ways, and so what if it's through IG. I bet you won't tell someone who says "yeah I was inspired to do photography from someone really talented and inspirational on IG. His name is Van Styles". Would you throw all those comments you lush made to that person too?

Oh I 100% would say that. While it is flattering that people may say I am inspirational and I don’t take that for granted I still think they should dig deeper than instagram to learn about the history of photography. People can seek inspiration from wherever they want… that is what inspiration is. I am merely saying that if you get involved in a art form it is beneficial to learn about its history and to take notice of some talented people who have helped push the craft. I could only wish to have a body of work like HCB,Bruce Davidson or Elliot Erwitt when I am gone. 

What I was speaking about on twitter earlier is about educating yourself to see some inspiring work from people who did photography for the sake of creating. Not for likes or notoriety. You will find a vast array of work that will open your eyes. More than feet hanging off buildings,photos of your friend in a mask holding smoke bombs or spinning steel wool.
