i know for a fact you have to sign in to enter any school if you do not work there, and especially if you are not a parent, so at some point Eva Stratt had Carl hold up his badge so she could march past a retired cop who acts as a security guard for the school and everyone watches, mouth agape, as the woman walked into Grace's classroom

it was end of day - teachers stay late. kids have afterschool activities. Stratt and Carl are not familiar faces, which would have every adults head on a swivel who worked in a school. people would notice.

and i just know the rumors in the faculty room went fucking HARD the next day when Grace didn't show up to work

thinking more about grace as a teacher

Avoids the faculty room like the plague

His classroom is NOT organized, there is shit everywhere - but he knows exactly where everything is

Goes out for lunch every day to eat his sad little sandwich on a bench in the sun

his prep is a lunch period so kids are ALWAYS in his room while hes trying to like grace and do other shit

Gets to work pretty early to prep for the day but leaves the moment the EOD bell rings which gets looks from other teachers

will speak up at faculty meetings - he never has a problem being an informative bitch at a faculty meeting and everyone loves and hates him for it

will always raise his hand to go on stage when they ask for teacher volunteers at an assembly

his do nows all have to do with relevant and contemporary research that he himself is interested in and keeps tabs on

he always 'forgets' to take attendance so he can have kids who need a break from sitting to bring it down to the office

his coworkers are convinced he's gay because he doesn't talk about his personal life and has no kids and teachers are gossip junkies

he only makes administrators who come in and have no idea how schools actually run use his Dr. title, everyone else can call him Mr.

He gets stuck with teaching health so he treats the human body and all that it does like its alien and the kids go nuts for it

all tests are open book because he firmly believes in utilizing resources

i'm rewatching la la land and jesus. god. i'm obsessed with whatever sebastian's fucking problem is. he's so insanely down bad for mia just INSTANTLY i think he should get blown up.

the way that Sebastian loved Mia so much was willing to do anything for her. he continuously moves his goalposts to fit the trajectory of her ambition. he was sacrificing since the first moment. they walk past his car to hers at the party and he has to circle back around. they move into his apartment and gone are the jazz memorabilia to create space for her things. he hears Mia speaking with her mother about his jazz club, and he sees the water stain on the ceiling in the corner of his room, and decides to take an alternate path for his future where Mia won't have to convince her family and herself of his potential—one where he can help Mia achieve her dream, even though it's at the end of his own. even at the end, where he was once so resolute that his club had to be named Chicken on a Stick, he named it Seb's because it's what she wanted and it was the logo she designed. he dedicated his dream to her even though he was alone in it. like are you kidding me. are you JOKING.

don’t get me wrong i LOVE the centrifugal force scene in the movie, but imo the scene in the book is even better so i’ve compiled a list of moments no one talks about that made me want to explode

grace instinctively grabbing rocky when he sees what happened and burning the palms of his hands on his carapace

grace calling rocky a “crazy bastard” for saving him

grace also burning himself all over his arms while trying to get rocky onto his back to carry him

grace carrying rocky’s body UP A LADDER

grace wondering incredulously why rocky would risk his life to save him, about 2.5 seconds before grace risks his own life to put rocky back in his atmosphere

grace taking off his IV and oxygen mask as soon as he regains consciousness to be able to sit as close to rocky as possible

grace pressing his hand to the wall that rocky’s body is leaning against and then pulling it away because it “feels too melodramatic”

grace checking on rocky about 100 times

“I want to sleep, but Rocky is more important”

grace DIYing a leafblower to try to help rocky heal

grace falling off his bunk and CRAWLING to rocky when he realizes he’s awake

there is a bronze statue of ryland grace outside of grover cleveland middle school. the knuckles on his hands are shiny and worn because it has become tradition for students to give him a fist bump on the way in to school.

You know, one of my favourite things about Ryland Grace is how sociable he is. How easy it is for people to fall into his orbit. They show it time and time again. How much his students obviously love him, how he manages to hype up the dour suits whilst he's testing the astrophage, Carl playing with him in the Home Depot, the other government people eating his Skittles, Eva Stratt dragging him around everywhere and allowing herself to be just that little bit more vulnerable around him, Rocky and the Eridians embracing him as not just as a savior but family.

I know it's not explicit that Grace is aroace but so often, aroace people are portrayed as distant and independent and happily isolated. Sometimes even to the point of misanthropy. It's so nice to see a character like this who loves connecting with people. He's a rambler, he's excitable. So what if he doesn't have a family or a dog. He doesn't need them because he has everyone he meets and that's enough.

I love the idea of Rocky extending Grace’s lifespan to Eridian levels without telling him

the end of project hail mary is such a ‘just this once, everyone lives’ moment bc the safety of earth and erid relied solely on grace and rocky meeting. earth would have never retrieved the taumoeba if rocky has not used his engineering skills and xenonite to retrieve it, nor would erid if grace had not made the scientific breakthrough and turned back for rocky. put other people (and sentient rocks) in their place, who may have allied but not had such a poignant connection, and the equation is missing a crucial component. everything truly did depend on them loving each other
