the women in my books follow me home (and i don’t always know when they arrive)

not my usual Project Hail Mary tumblr-esque post. But I've been reading a lot of books these past few weeks! This one is a little different because i wrote it after getting way too emotional over fictional women.

i’ve been thinking so much about the women i read about and the strange little ways they follow me into my everyday life- the way they change what i notice, the way they make me see things differently, and the little pieces of them that somehow stay with me. so naturally… i had to write about it.

this one is for the women who only exist on paper but somehow feel real anyway. ily all

Ryland Grace makes me cry so so much. What's so poetically brave about Grace is that he accepted he had to die twice.

The first time was when he was tackled onto the Hail Mary. His fate was decided for him.

The second time was when he realized that turning back for Rocky and saving him from the taumoeba eating through his ship was a suicide mission. He knew that even if the Eridians repaired the Hail Mary in time, he wouldn't have enough food to make it from Erid back to Earth.

He knew he was choosing death. And he turned the ship around ANYWAY.

The first sacrifice was forced on him. The second one was entirely his own T-T. Somewhere between those two moments, he rlly became the kind of person who would willingly trade his life for one friend.

sometimes i don't realize how much Project Hail Mary has impacted my life.

anyway. i had a midterm exam last friday about coping with climate change. i "studied" for maybe an hour (literally just skimmed my professor's powerpoint right before the exam)

after the exam, i felt awful because my friend (and sometimes i genuinely wonder why we're still friends) went, "so... you didn't cheat? you didn't use chatgpt? and you're still confident you passed? because you're sooo smart?" in the most sarcastic tone imaginable.

it wasn't even the words. it was the way his face changed, like he'd already DECIDED I COULDNT DO WELL unless i cheated. somehow that got into my head.

fast forward to today. scores were announced.

i placed TOP 3.

imagine preparing for less than an hour and still placing, while none of the cheating chatgpt mfs did...and i kept wondering why. then it hit me...

i didn't only study for an hour.

i've loved this stuff for YEARS.

this class reminded me of my favorite science subject back in high school, oh and astronomy. it reminded me of Project Hail Mary. i already knew about the Goldilocks Zone, exoplanets, and climate science because i was obsessed enough to read about them for fun. i literally made connections during the exam because my brain kept going, "oh wait, this is like when stratt bombed the arctic to speed up global warming because the earth was cooling due to astrophage."

the information wasn't magically downloaded into my brain an hour before the exam.

it had been living there the whole time.

LIKE OKAYYYY, HELL YEAH. i can study for an hour and still place near the top. not because i'm secretly cheating. but because i'm a fucking nerd. because i genuinely love learning. because sometimes your favorite book ends up teaching you more than you realize.

Borrowed 5 books from my friend and realized they're all romance tropes. I told her I read science/sci-fi and dystopian books. She was like, "oh sure what are they?". I told her, "The Maze Runner Series, Project Hail Mary, Shadow and Bone, the Firebird Trilogy." And she was like oh so no romance. why don't u read romance?

I realized I have never read any book with romance as the main trope LMFAO
