for my last reblog i didn't want to talk about drarry in op's tags but this is exactly why i love the pair so much...even non romantically speaking. as much as annoying and a bully draco is, it's only through him that harry can truly act like his age

it's never serious with them, draco would annoy harry and harry would have a clapback and maybe they would duel and show off their newly learned spells and that was that. draco would be envious of harry's popularity and insult him for it, but he never really treats him like someone to be revered at, and i think part of harry enjoys just being able to have schoolyard rivalry where both of them are equals

and maybe that's why he clings so much to it during hbp, that when draco starts going out of character and ignoring him he's obsessed in finding out why, because something that gives him a semblance of normalcy can't possibly disappear now. but after sectumsempra it does (and, coincidentally or not, harry tries to find another sense of normalcy immediately through ginny)

Ouww, this makes me so emotional. Like, Harry comes back to Hogwarts thinking they still have their usual dynamic, not realizing that Draco has clearly moved on from their petty school rivalry. There are so many moments in HBP where Harry is the one provoking Draco first, but Draco just ignores him. It’s almost like Draco's silence or avoidance is louder than any insult, and Harry doesn’t know how to interpret it, so he keeps trying to make Draco fight back or do something.

And the Ginny thing, yeah, I think it’s so interesting that his relationship with Ginny only started after the sectumsempra incident. It’s like he only turned to her once he ended his obsession with Draco, and he needed something or someone to distract him.

yeah!! i keep remembering of that one interview too:

"The loss of Hedwig represented a loss of innocence and security. She has been almost like a cuddly toy to Harry at times. Voldemort killing her marked the end of childhood. I’m sorry… I know that death upset a LOT of people!"

it's not just hedwig, but alot of things that bring harry comfort and security from his childhood started disappearing since as early as GOF; either with the death of a classmate in a place meant to be safe and secured or the loss of sirius or dumbledore's death. i believe his dynamic with draco is one of those too, in a rather twisted way (like how a bad place can bring you comfort, not because it's good, but because it's so constant that you never expect it to change and it can give you a semblance of control)

draco, despite being part of a family who supports voldemort, bullies more on a personal agenda rather than anything more malicious. he's bitter that harry is popular and wouldn't befriend him, even his outburst at the end of GOF is about how harry didn't choose the "winning side" and how harry didn't pick his friends carefully (implying that he should've picked draco lmfao).

he's such a constant in harry's 'normal' part of life that before HBP he wasn't really part of any voldemort-adjacent plot too...it would be lucius or narcissa or peter etc, never draco
