Very interested in you calling Draco femme coded. Is it just because of how he is described physically or something more?

I've got a post called "Gendered Bullying in Harry Potter" in drafts... but the short answer is that Draco bullies like a mean girl, not a mean boy. (And there are plenty of both in this series to compare him to.) He is very much an intentional pair with Pansy. He's never physical or violent, and it's actually highligted that he backs down from fights (or is flattened, usually by Ron.) Instead, Draco spreads rumors and embarrassing stories, he baits/tricks people into breaking the rules, runs smear campaigns, flashes his wealth and his *stuff,* and does a lot of pointing and sniggering from within a group of people.

He also gets beats like "crying in the bathroom" (otherwise seen with girls like Myrtle and Hermione) and "poisoning" (otherwise only seen from Nagini - very specifically a girl giant snake. and arguably Romilda Vane (spiking food with love potion) and Umbridge (spiking tea with Veritaserum.)

Also, yeah, it might be kind of an accident, but both he and Lucius get femme-coded descriptive language.

I don't think the femme coding is accidental at all, I think jkr tried to villain-code the malfoys and she only knows two ways of doing that: the grotesque route (Peter, Voldemort, the Dursleys...) and the poisonous beauty/ evil feminine route (also Voldemort, arguably Bellatrix).

I do think she never bothered to think through/ analyze the fem villain to queer coded pipeline, which is why so many people end up reading Draco as gay

Oh absolutely. Draco and Lucius are very femme-coded villains, very classic Disney villain status. Lockhart is even MORE of one. I like these matching descriptions from Book 2:

"Mr. Malfoy had set out in a great hurry, for not only were his shoes half-polished, but his usually sleek hair was disheveled."

"Lockhart didn’t look remotely handsome anymore ... in the absence of his usually toothy grin, he looked weak-chinned and feeble."

In both we've got some honestly quite girly 'attractive' signifiers (nice shoes, good hair, pretty smile.) But they're *constructed,* not *real,* and in the absence of them our villainous men look ridiculous. (or more ridiculous in, in the case of Lockhart.)

I think that JKR *probably* didn't mean to describe Draco *so* similarly to like, Cho Chang. But the general lack of masc attributes is absolutely on purpose.

Actually you’re right Harry has an ego of a toxic straight man but that’s just probably me lol remember that one scene in the gof where he doesnt want dance with a girl who’s just “taller” than him? 😂 him and Hermione fight often because he doesn’t listen to her (even though she truly has a point ex. in ootp) because he likes to be in charge I mean he’s lit the main characte lol saviour complex if you ask me but that’s why I like him though, he gets mischaracterized a lot some people saying he doesn’t want to be in charge and is humble and shite I believe those are people who only know Harry from the fanfiction 😭 Ron and Harry gives the friendship whereas both of them wants to be better than the other lol I remember that one scene where Harry was trying to peep at Ron’s grades and was relieved he’s higher than him ijbol as for Ginny I will hold your hand when I say this.. he only noticed her after he sectumsempra’d Draco lol talk about being so guilty he shift his focus and he started looking at Ginny after it’s like she’s a rebound IM DEADDD..

I actually don’t know and I have no idea why he wants his ass so bad.. like in the books Harry used ”archenemy” once and it’s with draco, not with Voldemort.. like idk why he wants draco to be relevant to him, he wants draco the way I cant explain why, the obsessions starts way back before hbp.. like Draco is nothing but a side character but the way his name is mentioned more than other side-characters is sooo insane, even in gof.. he’s irrelevant to the plot yet he’s always trying to make it about draco im actually fucking crying.. i genuinely think he shouldnt be that interested with draco since he’s nothing but a bully to him dudley is more relevant than draco because he’s his cousin yet all harry does to him is to fatshame him everytime he’s got chance unlike with draco who he can’t even call ugly?it’s like harry’s always having fun when draco’s teasing him and all, there is just something with draco that not even ginny have lol remember when harry could remember what draco was up to four years ago? for my last reblog i didn't want to talk about drarry in op's tags but this is exactly why i love the pair so much...even non romantically speaking. as much as annoying and a bully draco is, it's only through him that harry can truly act like his age

it's never serious with them, draco would annoy harry and harry would have a clapback and maybe they would duel and show off their newly learned spells and that was that. draco would be envious of harry's popularity and insult him for it, but he never really treats him like someone to be revered at, and i think part of harry enjoys just being able to have schoolyard rivalry where both of them are equals

and maybe that's why he clings so much to it during hbp, that when draco starts going out of character and ignoring him he's obsessed in finding out why, because something that gives him a semblance of normalcy can't possibly disappear now. but after sectumsempra it does (and, coincidentally or not, harry tries to find another sense of normalcy immediately through ginny)

Ouww, this makes me so emotional. Like, Harry comes back to Hogwarts thinking they still have their usual dynamic, not realizing that Draco has clearly moved on from their petty school rivalry. There are so many moments in HBP where Harry is the one provoking Draco first, but Draco just ignores him. It’s almost like Draco's silence or avoidance is louder than any insult, and Harry doesn’t know how to interpret it, so he keeps trying to make Draco fight back or do something.

And the Ginny thing, yeah, I think it’s so interesting that his relationship with Ginny only started after the sectumsempra incident. It’s like he only turned to her once he ended his obsession with Draco, and he needed something or someone to distract him.

it's not just hedwig, but alot of things that bring harry comfort and security from his childhood started disappearing since as early as GOF; either with the death of a classmate in a place meant to be safe and secured or the loss of sirius or dumbledore's death. i believe his dynamic with draco is one of those too, in a rather twisted way (like how a bad place can bring you comfort, not because it's good, but because it's so constant that you never expect it to change and it can give you a semblance of control)

draco, despite being part of a family who supports voldemort, bullies more on a personal agenda rather than anything more malicious. he's bitter that harry is popular and wouldn't befriend him, even his outburst at the end of GOF is about how harry didn't choose the "winning side" and how harry didn't pick his friends carefully (implying that he should've picked draco lmfao).

he's such a constant in harry's 'normal' part of life that before HBP he wasn't really part of any voldemort-adjacent plot too...it would be lucius or narcissa or peter etc, never draco
