Handfasting is a symbolic ceremony to honour a couple’s desire for commitment to each other to acknowledge that their lives and their fates are now bound together. The ritual itself usually includes a binding together of the hands of the couple with a ritual cord of some kind, hence the name, which means “hand fastening.” It is also the origin of the slang phrase “to tie the knot.” It is the predecessor to the modern wedding ceremony. Handfasting is an ancient Pagan marriage commitment ceremony. Please join hands with your betrothed and listen: Today Mel and Kai place their life into the hands of the other and do so lovingly, trustingly and openly. With full understanding of this, Kai and Mel have come here today to be joined as one in marriage. Without love, life is nothing, without love, death has no redemption. Though we are unable to give all this knowledge to these two, we can hope to leave with them the knowledge of love and its strengths and the anticipation of the wisdom that comes with time. With each union, more knowledge is gained and more wisdom gathered. Much wisdom concerning the joining together of two souls, has come our way through all paths of belief, and from many cultures. There are many things to say about marriage. It is a commitment that necessitates daily attention to flourish and brings with it a life-long responsibility to strive for the ideal of love and kindness. Today we celebrate an affirmation of the essential relationship that exists between them … the formation of their love and trust into a unified emergent entity. We are here today to bear witness to the beginning of something that is wonderful and new, but also to recognize the joy and happiness that has already marked Mel and Kai’s life as a couple.īeyond simply recognizing their love for one another, Mel and Kai have concluded that theirs is an enduring love … that they thrive and grow best by committing themselves to a loving relationship with one another.
