Ibn Qayyim:
Slaves of Allah stand in front of their Lord on two occasions, the first is when they stand in their prayers and the second is when they meet Him on the Day of Judgment.
So when the first standing is treated with the respect it deserves, the second standing place will become easy. Whoever takes the prayer lightly the second standing place will be difficult.
Ibn Qudaamah (رحمه الله) said:
"We were hijacked by some bedouins whilst travelling in al-Shaam. They found a sack containing food which they all ate from except their leader, so I asked: "Why aren't you eating?" He replied: "I'm fasting." I said: "You block the roads, steal and kill people, yet you are fasting?!" He said: "We should always keep the path to repentance open." After some time had passed, I saw that very man performing tawaaf around the Ka'bah! He said: "Allah guided me due to my fasting."

New Shaykh Mukhtar ash-Shinqitee
Story of a young sahabi.
Thalaba Ibn Abdul Rahman (RA) was a young man at the age of 16. He always ran errands for the Prophet (SAW). One day while walking though the city of Madinah, he passed by a house with an open door. Out of curiosity he took a glance inside. In this glance, he saw a light curtain being blown away from a bathroom entrance where a woman was bathing. He immediately lowered his gaze. With an extreme feeling of guilt and hypocrisy, his mind ran. Thinking to himself, ''How could I be of the companions, one that is close to the Prophet (SAW), one who runs his errands and be so horrible as to disrespect peoples privacy??'' He feared that Allah would reveal to the Prophet (SAW) evidence of his hypocrisy. His guilt denied him to ever show his face to the Prophet (SAW). So he ran away and headed towards the mountains. Days went by and the Prophet (SAW) kept asking the other companions if they had seen Thalaba. No one had seen him. With the Prophet (SAW)worried about Thalaba, he sent a few of the companions to look for him everywhere, among them were Umar ibn Khattab (RA) and Salman al-Farsi (RA). They looked everywhere in Madinah, and on the outskirts of Madinah, until they came about a set of mountains between Makkah and Madinah where some nomads where herding sheep. The companions asked the nomads if they had seen a young man with Thalaba's characteristics. They told the companions about a weeping boy. He has been here for 40 days. He comes down from the mountains once a day weeping and he drinks the milk they offer him. Then he goes back up the mountains weeping, crying, always asking for Allah for forgiveness, and saying words of repentance. So the companions waited until he came down and watched him. He had lost weight. His countenance reflected sorrow as he drank the milk that was mixed with his tears. When Thalaba saw the 2 companions, fear and terror crept inside his heart as though the angels of death came to take him. He tried to run away but they chased him and grabbed him. Thalaba pleaded with the companions, ''Please! Please! Don't take me to the Prophet (SAW)! Im too scared!'' The companions told him ''What is wrong with you oh Thalaba?? Take a hold of yourself!...Please come with us oh Thalaba!'' Thalaba pleaded with them not to take him to the Prophet (SAW) asking them if Allah revealed a verse about him saying he was a hyprocite? That he was a munaafiq?? The companions were committed to taking him to the Prophet (SAW) as they said ''Wallahi we have to take you to the Prophet (SAW)...It is a command from him!'' and he was taken back to Madinah where the Prophet (SAW) came to see him. He asked again if Allah had put him among the hypocrites or revealed that he was. The Prophet (SAW) assured him that there were no such verses. He laid out Thalaba's tired, weak body and placed Thalaba's head on his lap. He said ''Ya Rasulullah remove the head of a sinner away from you!'' The Prophet (SAW) comforted him until Thalaba told the Prophet (SAW) ''I feel as though ants are walking between my flesh and bones.'' The Prophet (SAW) told him it was death and his time had come. He witnessed while Thalaba's head was on his lap, Thalaba proclaiming ''There is no god worthy of worship other than Allah, and that Muhammed (SAW) is the messenger of Allah!'' The Prophet (SAW) washed Thalaba and carried him to the grave. It is narrated that on their way to bury Thalaba, the Prophet (SAW) walked on his toes as though he were in a crowd. When Umar (RA) asked about this, the Prophet (SAW) explained that he was being crowded with the angels.
Wahb bin Munbih reported that ‘Issa, ‘alayhi asalaam, said to the hawariyoon:
The most anxious and alaramed (of you) in time of calamity are those who love the dunya most.
[Siyar A'lam Al-Nubalaa, 4/551]
Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiyAllâhu 'anhu), that the Messenger of Allâh (sallAllâhu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Allâh hates every harsh man, who eats excessively, shouts in the markets, sleeps at night like a corpse, passes the day like a donkey, and who is knowledgeable of the Worldly life, but ignorant of the Hereafter. [Ibn Hibban 72, Sahih Isnaad by Al Aranout and Jami’ Sagheer 2759-60, Sahih by Albani]
The Patience of Abu Qilabah
Imam al-Awza'i:
I went out to the shore as a patrolman and our patrol at the time was in al-‘Areesh in Egypt. When I arrived at the shore, I came upon an open area and there was tent on it. In the tent was a man who had no hands and legs and he was hard of hearing and sight. None of his limbs were of benefit to him but his tongue, and he was saying: ‘O Allah, grant me (the ability) to praise you a praise through which I can sufficiently thank You for the favours You have bestowed upon me and by which You have preferred me over many whom You have created a great preference.’
Al-Awza’i said: ‘Abdullah said: ‘By Allah, I will certainly go to this man and I shall certainly ask him about this speech. Perhaps it is an understanding, or knowledge or inspiration which was inspired to him?’
So I approached the man and greeted him and said to him: ‘I heard you and you were saying: ‘O Allah, grant me (the ability) to praise you a praise through which I can sufficiently thank You for the favours You have bestowed upon me and by which You have preferred me over many whom You have created a great preference’ so what favour from the favours of Allah upon you are you praising Him for? And in what way did He prefer you over others a great preference that you need to thank Him for it?’
He said: ‘Don’t you see what my Lord has done? By Allah, if He sent the sky to me as a fire which burned me, or ordered the mountains to crush me, or the oceans to drown me, or the earth to swallow me up; it would only cause me to be more grateful to my Lord for the favour of this tongue He bestowed upon me.
However, O slave of Allah, as you have come to me, I have a need of you! Perhaps you see me and the state I am in, I cannot harm nor benefit myself. I had a young son who used to come to me at the time of prayer and help me do my ablution, and when I became hungry he’d feed me, and if I became thirsty he’d provide me with a drink but I have missed him for the last three days, so please look for him on my behalf may Allah have mercy on you.’
I said: ‘By Allah, no creature could fulfill the need of another which is greater in reward with Allah than a need similar to yours.’ So I set out looking for the young boy, and I hadn’t gone far before I came by a sand hill, and behold I found the boy who had been preyed upon by a beast which ate his flesh! I did istirjaa’ (saying ‘inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un’) and said: How am I going to be able to face this man with a gentle face?!’
As I was heading towards him, the dhikr (words of remembrance) of Ayyub (‘alayhisalam) came to my heart. So when I reached him I greeted him and he responded and said: ‘Are you not my companion?’ I said ‘Yes!’ He said: ‘What did you do about my need?’ I said: ‘Are you more honourable in the site of Allah or was Ayyub the Prophet?’ He said, ‘Of course, Ayyub the Prophet.’ I said: ‘Do you know what His Lord did with him? Did He not test him in his wealth, family and children?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘How did He find him?’ He said: ‘He found him patient, grateful and praising.’ I said: ‘He was not pleased with that for him until his relatives and loved ones deserted him?’ He said, ‘yes.’ I said: ”How did His Lord find him?’ He said: ‘He found him patient, grateful and praising; make this short may Allah have mercy on you.’ I said to him: ‘The young boy you sent me in search of, I found him in a sand hill having been preyed upon by a beast which had eaten his flesh. May Allah increase for you tour reward and may He inspire you with patience.’
The tested man said: ‘Praise be to Allah Who did not create from my progeny creations who would disobey Him and He would then punish them by the fire. He then did istirjaa’ and breathed a sigh and died.’
I said: ‘Indeed to Allah we belong and to Him is our return. What a huge calamity before me; a man like this, if I were to leave him the beasts would eat him, and if I stay I won’t be able to harm nor benefit.’ So I covered him in a cloak which was over him and sat at his head crying.
As I was sitting, four men came upon me and said: ‘O slave of Allah, what is your situation and what is your story.’ So I told them my story and his. They said to me: ‘Uncover his face for us, perhaps we know him.’ I uncovered his face and the men fell upon him kissing his eyes and his hands alternately and saying: ‘May our father be sacrificed; for how long these eyes were lowered from the prohibitions of Allah. May our father be sacrificed; for how long this body prostrated before Allah while the people were sleeping.’
I said: ‘Who is this, may Allah have mercy on you?’ They said, ‘This is Abu Qilabah al-Jurmi, the companion of Ibn ‘Abbas. He had tremendous love for Allah and the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam)!!’
So we washed him and shrouded him with clothing we had with us and prayed over him and buried him. The men left and I went back to my station. When night fell, I put my head down and saw him in a dream, in a garden from the gardens of Paradise wearing two garments from the garments of Paradise while reciting the revelation (which means): “Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home.” (al-Ra’ad: 24).
I said: ‘Aren’t you my companion?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘How did you receive this?!’ He said: ‘Verily, with Allah are levels that cannot be attained except with patience at times of trial and gratitude at times of prosperity along with fear of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, in private and in public.’

Imam ash-Shafi'i:
Do you belittle dua'a and discount it
While not knowing what the prayer accomplishes
The arrows of the night do not miss their target.
But they have a delay, and the delay then finishes.

Imam Al-Shafi'ee:
Part from the days where you used to do as you wish and restrain your soul when the decree of Allah descends. And don’t despair over the events of the past for none of the events of the dunya were ever meant to remain. And be a man who is firm upon his affairs and whose character is that of pardoning and loyalty and there is no sadness or happiness that is continuous just as there is no comfort or pain. If you are a person who is satisfied with what he has then you and the owner of all possessions are equal and upon he whose open valley death descends upon then there is no earth or sky to protect you from it and the earth of Allah is vast but when death descends even the open valley congests.

Ibn al-Qayyim:
If Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wants good for someone, he gives him a test which is going to break him.

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
[Quran 39:53]
Ibraaheem b. Adham (d.162H) – Allaah have mercy on him – once passed through the market of Basrah. People gathered around him and asked:
O Aboo Ishaaq, Allaah the Exalted says in his Book. ‘Call on me, I will answer your prayers’, but we have been calling on Him for a long time and He does not answer our prayers.
[Ibraaheem] replied, “O people of Basrah, your hearts have died in respect to ten things: First, you know Allaah but you do not give Him His rights; second, you have read Allaah’s Book but you do not act by it; third, you claim to love Allaah’s Messenger – Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him – yet you abandon his Sunnah; fourth, you claim to be enemies to Shaytaan but you conform to [his ways]; fifth, you say you love Paradise yet you do not work for it; sixth, you say you fear The Fire yet you put yourselves closer to it [by sinning]; seventh, you say death is true but you do not prepare for it; eighth, you busy yourselves with the faults of others and disregard your own; ninth, you consume the favors of your Lord but are not grateful for them; and tenth, you bury your dead but take no lesson from them.” [Aboo Nu’aym, Hilyah Al-Awliyaa’ 8: 15, 16]
“Shaykh Muhammad al-Amin ash-Shinqiti (rahimahullah) took very little from this worldly life, and I used to see him and he could not differentiate between the values of different (notes within the same) currency, and he once said to me: “I came from my country (Shinqeet [Mauritania]) and with me is a treasure that is very seldom found in the possession of anyone, and it is contentment, and if I wanted high status, I would have known the way to achieve it, but I chose not to exchange this worldly life for the hereafter, and I do not give my knowledge to attain worldly desires.””
