So another teaser from the 1/3rd complete MTG Demographic Database project, this time looking at casting cost by gender.  As it turns out, Men are paid about 99 cents on the dollar when compared to women... and there is a clear pay gap between cards that contain a depiction of atleast 1 gendered person, vs cards that don't depict a gender clearly. A couple of house keeping notes: 1) This model doesn't include 0 casting cost spells, the data is kinda erratic for most of them, especially since we are considering 'gendered' cards, most gendered 0 CMC cards have weird alternate costs. Since we are tracking 'wages' for magic cards, I am counting '0' as volunteer, and not including it in wage statistics.  (Or I'm lazy). 2) This model doesn't account for split cards perfectly, nor cards with kicker/additional costs. Cards with Echo/Rebound also make this model less then perfect. 3) The numbers are close enough that the 1% gap in pay may be statistically insignificant.  Instead of calculating that chance, i'll just recalculate this chart when I have complete data.   (So go help out with the tagging at the MTGDDB)

So the MTG Demographic Database just passed a milestone today, they have tagged 1/3rd of all cards now have been tagged with gender information.    Which is great! So while this isn't a complete census, it's a great starting off point.  A few intresting numbers to get started, i'll delve deeper into the numbers later this week, but so far, about 1.5 in 10 magic cards depicts a woman, where as almost twice that depict men.  (Seems like most magic cards depict crowds, monsters, landscapes or lavalamps)

More interesting is the breakdown of where women appear in magic cards.  There are nearly three times as many white cards depicting women as there are red cards.  Could it be that there are just more angels then there are warriors?  Or maybe there are just fewer identifiable humans in red (or fewer red cards in the data set)?  I'll be delving further into the data this week. Magic Demographic Data

Magic is taking great strides in incorporating diverse experiences into it's lore.  With recent additions of the first canonically gay characters, and the first canonically trans characters, the multiverse is a more diverse and inclusive space.  Which is awesome!

The Multiverse Census wants to take a look at the growth of that diversity. It seeks to ask questions like 'how has the representation of people of color changed over the years in magic' or 'how does the color pie effect the representation of women'?

The census will use data gathered from the the MTG Demographic Database, a sister project that is collaboratively tagging the art of MTG with gender, race, and community sourced tags.
