RENOIR, Pins à Cagnes

Dans Pins à Cagnes, Renoir se révèle être un coloriste virtuose. Fermement campé par les deux pins qui lui donnent sa stabilité, ce tableau est peint avec une matière très sèche qui laisse souvent apparaître le grain de la toile. La touche est d’une telle liberté qu’il semble que le vieil artiste ait peint cette œuvre d’instinct.

Planted firmly with two pines that give it stability, this piece is done with very dry paint that often lets the grain of the canvas show through. The freedom of brushstroke is such that it seems the artist had painted the piece intuitively just the night before.

VALLOTTON, Le Haut-de-forme, intérieur ou La Visite

Dans ce tableau où rien ne se passe, où rien ne se devine vraiment, Vallotton introduit aussi quelques altérations destinées à modifier la perception de l’espace. Le fait s’avère particulièrement probant dans la partie droite de l’œuvre où, insensiblement, le peintre estompe l’angle du mur qui finit par disparaître derrière le dossier de la chaise.

This is particularly convincing on the right side of the painting, in which the painter gradually dims the corner of the wall until it disappears behind the back of the chair.

MONET, La Seine à Vétheuil

Au cours de l’été 1878, Monet, contraint par ses difficultés financières, quitte Paris pour Vétheuil. Ce petit bras de la Seine à Vétheuil est peint en aval du village, entre les îles de Moisson. La lumière blonde du matin transfigure un début d’automne. La surface du tableau, véritablement vibratoire, est animée d’une touche déjà expérimentée à Argenteuil. Fragmentée dans les frondaisons portées par l’horizon, elle s’étire légèrement dans le reflet symétrique.

During the summer of 1878, financial difficulties forced Monet to leave Paris and live in Vétheuil.This small branch of the Seine at Vétheuil is painted downstream from the village, between the Moisson islands. The golden morning light transfigures the early autumn. The surface of the painting has a truly vibratory effect, brought to life with brushwork he had already experimented with in Argenteuil. Fragmented in the foliage along the horizon, the strokes grow a touch longer in the symmetrical reflection.

JONGKIND, Paris, le pont Marie et le quai des Célestins

Jongkind, familier, depuis la Hollande, de ces bords de rivières, se place sur les quais, au pied des ponts et saisit cette animation mais en la limitant à quelques scènes et à quelques silhouettes. Fidèle en cela à sa formation, il privilégie une vision de paysagiste qui le conduit à équilibrer sa composition générale et non pas à isoler telle ou telle curiosité. La part du ciel, les effets de lumière, les reflets du soleil dans l’eau comptent tout autant et Jongkind prend soin de composer harmonieusement chacune de ses vues.

————— Jongkind, who was familiar with these riverbank scenes in Holland, positioned himself on the quays, at the foot of bridges, and captured the bustling life, but limited it to a few scenes and figures. True to his training as a landscape painter, Jongkind favoured a vision that led him to balance his overall composition, rather than isolate a specific point of interest. The portion of sky, the effects of light, the reflections of the sun on the water were equally important and Jongkind took care to compose each one of his views harmoniously.

GUILLAUMIN, Pins maritimes, crique au Brusc

Guillaumin représente ici les pins maritimes du bois du Mont Salvat dont la forme imposante se détache au second plan. Il peut ainsi user des contrastes entre les couleurs chaudes du sol rougeâtre d’où jaillissent les pins et les couleurs froides de la mer bleue qui s’étend calme, sous un ciel aux nuages d’un rose tendre. Il travaille les contrastes entre zones d’ombres saturées et zones de pleine lumière avec le blanc du papier laissé en réserve, renforçant par ce procédé l’intensité lumineuse de l’ensemble.

————— Guillaumin chose to portray the maritime pine forest with the Mont Salvat towering in the background. In such a way, he could play with contrasts between the warm colours of the reddish soil from which the pine trees grow and the cool colours of the blue sea stretched out peacefully beneath a sky of soft pink clouds. Guillaumin tinged the shadows with purple and blue following Chevreul's theories on colour. He worked on the contrasts between the areas of saturated shadows and the areas of full light with the white of the paper left showing through, thus reinforcing the overall luminosity.

VALLOTTON, Nature morte aux pommes

À partir de 1910, Félix Vallotton s’intéresse au genre de la nature morte. Contrairement aux conventions qui gouvernent le genre, Vallotton ne dispose pas les différents éléments sur une table mais sur un simple tabouret de paille tressée couvert d’un drap blanc. Pommes et bananes sont décrites avec un grand souci du détail réaliste, jusque dans les altérations qui affectent leur peau.

————— Félix Vallotton began taking interest in the still-life genre in 1910. Contrary to the conventions governing the genre, Vallotton did not arrange the different components on a table, but on a plain straw-plait stool covered with a white sheet. Apples and bananas are depicted with great attention to realistic detail, right down to the discolouration of their peel.

CROSS, Le Mourillon

Dans Le Mourillon, Cross semble avoir travaillé très rapidement. En quelques traits de crayon, il esquisse les contours du Fort Saint-Louis, des bâtiments, du plongeoir à gauche et des bateaux, puis, en coups de pinceau très fluides pose les couleurs diluées (plus dense pour le bleu comme souvent) sur le papier blanc.

————— In Le Mourillon, Cross appears to have worked very rapidly. In just a few pencil strokes, he sketches the outlines of the fortification, the buildings, the diving platform to the left and the boats. Then, using very fluid brushwork, he applies the diluted colours (denser for the blue, as often the case) on white paper.

COTTET, Venise

Ce tableau intitulé Venise est constitué d’une bande maritime et d’une bande de ciel qui se rejoignent sur une ligne d’horizon presque impalpable sur laquelle Cottet a déposé les silhouettes fantomatiques de la ville. La texture de sa peinture est d’une telle fluidité qu’elle évoque sur tous les contours des bâtiments la technique du lavis. Des noirs feutrés, des gris à peine ombrés définissent délicatement les masses qui se colorent insensiblement de la pâle lumière du couchant. La partie centrale, le meilleur de cette œuvre, offre une maîtrise d’exécution d’une rare finesse.

————— Comprised of a strip of water and a strip of sky joined at an almost intangible horizon line upon which the artist set the ghostly cityscape, the artwork is a prime illustration of Cottet’s astonishing paintwork. The texture of his painting is so fluid all the contours of the buildings appear to be done in a wash. Muted blacks and barely shaded greys delicately delineate the blocks that gradually become tinged with the pale light of the setting sun. The central section is the finest part of the artwork, demonstrating a rare mastery of execution.

GUILLAUMIN, Brouillard au soleil levant

Ce pastel tardif aux tonalités douces et harmonieuses est travaillé à l’estompe, le contour des choses disparaît noyé dans la brume matinale. Dans un lyrisme pur, l’artiste capte l’aspect éphémère de la lumière de l’aube. Dans sa quête d’absolu, Guillaumin se place dans la descendance directe du paysage romantique reflet de l’âme de l’artiste.

————— This late pastel done in soft and harmonious tones is worked with a stump to blend the contours into the morning mist. With pure lyricism, the artist captures the fleeting aspect of the first light of dawn. LAPRADE, Bouquet de fleurs des champs

Dans Bouquet de fleurs des champs, le vase est en verre, sobre, et sa transparence laisse pénétrer les tonalités de gris nuancées du mur. La touche est fine et délicate pour décrire la légèreté des campanules et des anémones, irisées d’une douce lumière. Le violet de leurs pétales semble pénétrer les harmonies de gris de l’arrière-plan. Seuls quelques empattements de blanc donnent forme aux marguerites placées au centre du bouquet.

Fine and delicate brushwork is used to convey the lightness of the blue bells and anemones, bathed in a soft glow. The violet of their petals appears to penetrate the harmonies of grey in the background. A few thick touches of white are enough to give shape to the daisies placed in the centre of the bouquet.

PISSARRO, Quai du Pothuis, Bords de l’Oise

Dans ce tableau, Pissarro s’intéresse aux effets atmosphériques, à la brume légère qui baigne le paysage. Les éléments fusionnent sous le soleil couchant qui teinte d’un rose doré le ciel, la terre et l’eau. La touche se fait plus petite, vibrante. Les passants vus de dos et à contre-jour, se fondent dans cette magie colorée et donnent toute son intimité à l’œuvre. Il cherche non plus à décrire un lieu, mais à recréer l’atmosphère qui s’en dégage.

————— Pissarro focuses here on the effects of weather, the light fog that bathes the landscape. The components merge beneath the setting sun that tints the sky, the ground and the water a golden pink hue. His brushwork is smaller, vibrant. Backlit passers-by melt into this colourful magic and give the artwork all its intimacy. Pissarro is not striving to describe a place, but rather recreate the mood it evokes.

DEGAS, Cheval de selle

Dans cette œuvre, Degas dessine d’un trait sûr les contours du corps de l’animal vu de profil. À l’aide de très fines hachures croisées, il ombre les formes pleines du cheval soulignant la finesse des muscles et des articulations, mais aussi le lustre du pelage court.

RENOIR, Baie de Salerne ou Paysage du midi

Ce tableau est composé de trois plans successifs, chacun dominé par une couleur différente. Bien qu’il cherche à donner à cette vue une structure solide, Renoir reste encore entièrement soumis à la couleur : le plan intermédiaire qui juxtapose de larges obliques de jaune, de parme et de vert, vibre d’une violente lumière dont la volubilité va s’estompant dans les lointains.

————— The painting from the Senn collection is composed of three successive planes, each with a different dominant colour. GUILLAUMIN, Tête de femme de profil

Ce pastel de Guillaumin représente une jeune femme de profil en extérieur. La partie inférieure de son visage se détache sur une bande bleu clair qui semble indiquer la présence d’une rivière au second plan, tandis que la ligne de son front et l’arête de son nez sont accentués par les tons ocre de la berge sablonneuse ponctuée d’arbustes que l’on devine à l’arrière-plan.

SÉRUSIER, Nature morte aux roseaux

La Nature morte aux roseaux, peinte en 1904, est très représentative des expérimentations auxquelles se livre Paul Sérusier à travers la représentation de sujets inanimés. A l’instar des cubistes, il travaille avec une palette réduite. L’utilisation des gris éclairés, si chers à l’artiste, lui permet d’obtenir un tableau d’une franche luminosité, ainsi que des effets d’une grande plasticité, notamment sur le motif des pommes de terre placées au centre qui paraissent presque flotter en apesanteur.

————— Still Life with Reeds, painted in 1904, is highly representative of the investigations Paul Sérusier made into the portrayal of inanimate objects. Like the Cubists, he worked with a limited palette. The use of light greys, so dear to the artist, enables him to obtain a painting with pure luminosity, as well as highly visual effects, particularly with the potato motif that seems to float almost weightlessly in the centre.

COTTET, Montagne

Dans ce tableau de Charles Cottet, la spontanéité et la vitesse d’exécution contribuent à renforcer le surgissement de la montagne au sommet de laquelle s’accrochent d’onctueuses brumes qui laissent percer la lumière. Leur fluidité et leur mobilité est rendue d’une façon très moderne : l’artiste en réservant certaines parties de son support de carton parvient à créer des trouées plus sombres qui donnent au ciel sa profondeur. Le même procédé, utilisé sur les flancs de la montagne, lui permet de varier ses tons de noirs et de modeler cette immense masse.

————— In this Cottet painting, the spontaneity and speed of execution further strengthen the upsurging of the mountain, crowned with unctuous mists pierced by the light. Their fluidity and motion are given a very modern rendering: by reserving certain areas of his board's surface, the artist manages to create darker patches that lend depth to the sky. He uses the same process on the sides of the mountain to vary his tones of black and mould the huge rocky mass.

LÉPINE, La Seine avec vue du Panthéon

Considéré comme l’un des créateurs du paysage parisien, Stanislas Lépine élabore une œuvre intime de style sensible qui le situe dans la lignée des peintres de Barbizon et à l’orée de l’impressionnisme. Dans ce tableau, l’imprécision brumeuse des silhouettes des immeubles et du Panthéon, les frondaisons cotonneuses des arbres, qui se confondent avec le panache de fumée que crache le vapeur, les rouges stridents qui relèvent l’ensemble s’apparentent au meilleur de l’artiste.

————— Considered one of the creators of the Parisian landscape, Stanislas Lépine developed an intimate body of work with a sensitive style that placed him in line with the Barbizon painters and at the cusp of Impressionism. In this painting, the vague, misty outlines of the buildings and the Pantheon, the cottony foliage of the trees that melds with the plume of smoke spewing from the steamer, the strident reds that embellish the whole, are some of the artist's best work.
