The Death of National Geographic (and some payback)
National Geographic Magazine has been bought out by 21st Century Fox, a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation (and the infamous Fox News). About 9% of National Geographic’s award-winning staff was immediately laid off on the day of the takeover, the largest amount of layoffs in their history.
The sale marks a shift of the previous non-profit organization to a for-profit one, and most likely means that the long-term investigative reporting stories National Geographic is famous for will no longer be funded, in favor of shorter, shallower, more clickbaity stories.
Rupert Murdoch is a known climate change denier, and has a long history of disrespecting, misunderstanding, or flat-out ignoring science. The people working for National Geographic knew that the sale would likely mean the end of truly science-based writing.
So what did they write for their last non-Fox-affiliated issue?
An entire issue where every single article is about the indisputable scientific truth of global warming, and what it’s doing to our planet.
National Geographic as we know it may be dead, but at least it died doing what it did best - upholding science and spreading knowledge.
This is really sad to see. Growing up I used to admire the photography. It something I constantly strived to one day match.
This years John Lewis Ad:
A kid spends all year ignoring his dad cos he’s too busy on his IPad. Adele’s recent semi-ironic piano cover of Enter Sandman plays over the top of this montage, and the seasons progress until eventually the kid breaks his iPad cos he tweeted to hard. It gets to Christmas and you still haven’t seen his mum yet so you assume she’s dead cos it keeps cutting to pictures of her around the house and the dad looking sad. The kid gets a present off his dad, wrapped in paper with hashtags on it. He tears off the paper expecting a new iPad but it’s actually a football, and he and his dad enjoy a kick about in the garden, Gary Lineker maybe shows up. Then there’s a knock at the door and it’s his mum, not dead but dressed in her doctor uniform cos she had to work Christmas Day for free, she is followed by Mary Berry and a Paul Hollywood snowman, who announce “this is the best Great British Christmas ever”. The kids mum presents him with a brand new iPad and he promises to go easy with it this time and only use it for watching Only Fools and Horses and learning about the upcoming EU referendum. Your mum cries and says “well I wasn’t going to shop there but I am now"

LMAO
I cannot breathe
What the… but… how… wha…. how did this person…. I…
i just wrote -2-2x= like 75 times on a paper oh god
i filled up both sides
what just happened
this makes me uncomfortable,
then do =x+2+ for the next part
for “or blow me a kiss, and that’s lucky too” it’s =+1=+1
What is this sorcery?!?!
this is my favorite post on tumblr
the ending is: 12=x1=
So I just worked out the whole song, and here you go:
- 2 - 2 x = = x + 2 + - 2 - 2 x = = x + 2 + = + 1 = + 1
- 7 2 + 7 = x + 2 + = 2 + 2 1 = x + 2 +
- 2 - 2 x = = x + 2 + - 2 - 2 x = = x + 2 + - 2 - 2 x = = x + 2 + - 2 - 2 x = = x + 2 +
- 7 2 + 7 = x + 2 +
- 7 2 + 7 = x + 2 + = 7 7 2 + = x + 2 + = x - 7 - 2
- 2 - 2 x = = x + 2 + = x + 2 1 = x + 2 + 1 2 = x 1 =
My mind just broke
*writes furiously*
Mom: Are you writing an essay?
Me: Hm? Wha-oh yeah. An essay. Definitely.
