Erik is completely valid to keep making Damien and Huxley be The RA Pride Month BA Couple™.
They are (as far as I know) the only current, canon, exclusive, openly, consistent LGBTQ+ couple currently in the RedactedVerse. Every other Lad who you (the plural, abstract edition of ‘you’) picture as being in a gay relationship with the Listener, two other fans picture them as having a partner who does not identify as male.
All of Erik’s characters are pansexual and panromantic. He makes M4A audios. He is incredibly supportive of LGBTQ+ rights and validations. The issue with being this supportive and catering to his audience all year round is that when it comes to Pride Month, maybe it’s hard to think of how he can do something different than the rest of his BA’s.
Is Damien and Huxley being the BA for June predictable? Absolutely. I don’t think a single person was shocked to see it was them.
Could he do it in other ways? Also yes. Flashback with Gavin and Lasko. Non-Canon or Alt!Canon Relationships (FL/Gavin/Lasko non-canon again; Imp!David and Imp!Asher; Guy x Blake crackship) would also work.
But does this work, and is within Erik’s comfort zone, especially after he’s went through some stuff in his personal life as of late, and also he’s clearly building up to something in the MAAM Crew and Dahlia Vamps and Wolves storylines and probably has a lot on his plate as is? Yes.
The idea came up one movie night, spoken between fistfuls of eaten popcorn, sips of crispy cold sodas and a shitty old movie being played on the TV in Damien and Huxley's home, whole couch and the adjacent armchair occupied by six people, respectfully all cuddling their significant others.
We should all go somewhere together.
And the whole group took it to their hearts quite literally.
Damien, always the most organised and eager to do all the prep, presented the idea. A cabin by the lake, place enough for all of them to enjoy and relax in. A perfect city-break, far from the bustle of the city, constant emails and phone calls, only peace, quiet and soaking up the sun or splashing in the water. They couldn't agree faster to the offer, plans set in stone, bags packed and thrown in the trunks of the cars.
Summer break was in.
"Dear, your water." Lasko reminded, not looking from the book he was reading. The pages were turned lazily, one finger holding them in place when the wind picked up a little, leaves on the nearby willow tree moving with grace.
They hummed something under their breath, hand reaching blindly for their water bottle, sipping through the straw. Compared to Lasko who was hiding under a big umbrella, after letting him put spf all over them, they laid down on the blanket, eyes closed, head empty. While he read, some novel he picked up last time they visited a bookshop on the walk back home from work, they listened to a podcast, one earphone on, the wire connected to their phone, cable a little tangled.
"Do you need a refill?"
"No, still good. Thank you love."
"Of course." another page turned, another few minutes of the podcast passed.
Freelancer bickered with Gavin about the importance of using spf on him, even if he was a demon and was in no need of such things, according to him. They smirked, hearing the reasoning, or lack of thereof. At least of one that mattered and made any impact on his side of the playful argument.
"I can feel you staring at me." and they could feel his cheeks getting red after being caught in his act. Lasko cleared his throat, book set aside. They took the earphone out, podcast paused for the time being.
"I'm just making sure you're doing okay." and he had a perfectly good reason to do so.
The whole group agreed on going away, but the only time that fit all of their schedules included the summer solstice. Not wanting to ruin the high spirits everyone got at the occasion of the organised trip, they agreed. One day of feeling bad couldn't ruin all the fun, they told them all, and their own reflection in the mirror, as they packed the "emergency bag" as Lasko called it, medicine cabinet from the bathroom practically emptied.
While Hux got the short end of the stick, as Damien called in the morning to inform they would arrive a day later than planned, they pulled through the misery with a brave face. Be it a placebo effect of being near water, or maybe they just grew used to toughing it up, with enough of drops to keep their dry eyes moist, and cold water to ease up the parched throat, the next morning came with the pounding headache gone, magic rejuvenated and their beloved clinging to them in his sleep.
"It's okay now. Far better than yesterday." they turned their face to him, smiling at the sight. Half sitting in the shade, with a white streak of sunscreen on his nose to prevent it form getting burnt and freckles, more prominent than ever, he looked beautiful to put it simply.
"I'm glad then." and so were they, seeing him so focused on something other than work.
"If you need anything, you know that I'm right here?"
"I do, darling. You told me that ten minutes ago." a kiss was pressed to their fingers, blew towards him, and he couldn't help but smile like a teenager, cheeks a little bit more pink than usual when he reached to catch it, the hand against his lips. Simple gesture, but one that meant so much to both of them.
"I…I just w-want to make sure you are okay." his stutter was adorable too, though as of late, some of it was gone, something they mourned quietly. Though, the lack of nervous stressors for him was everything they could wish for.
"I'm forever grateful for that, don't worry." the podcast's episode finished and they reached for their phone to press "play" for another one, introduction rolling in. Settling down more comfortably on the blanket, they stretched with a hum of approval when the sore muscles and joints shifted into a better position for their body.
And if they scooted closer to their man, it had to be an accident. But his fingers tracing shapes on their back felt better than cool water against their lips as they drank it again.
"Did I tell you already how…amazing you look today?" he asked quietly, book set aside, all of his attention only on them, heart beating just a little bit faster because of the truth that he spoke of. The sun was hitting them just right, swimwear they asked his opinion on fit them perfectly and the seashell bracelet they had tied around their ankle matched his own. Cheesy, he had to agree, but wasn't it a perfect moment and occasion to be just that? There was no one to judge them beside their best friends
"I might have heard it when you woke up. And after breakfast too." with dreamy voice, they reached their own hands to grab his, pleasant caresses suddenly ceasing, now holding onto their hand like a lifeline.
"Oh! Oh, uh then. Well…well, you look amazing now too."
"Thank you baby. You're quite a sight yourself too." especially with his whole face beetroot red, such a good colour on him. Lasko never took compliments well, no matter how gently or fervently they spoke them, their man always getting flustered, stumbling over his words or accepting them with a stuttered thanks, face hiding away the obvious embarrassment.
But he did look good. His hair was slightly turning wavy after being wet during the swim they enjoyed earlier, the linen shirt he had on, buttons undone, framed him nicely, shorts already dry because of the temperature. And the adorable awkward smile he tried to hide, all more than ideal on him.
"Aren't you too hot? There's some space left over here, I can scoot over." he offered after clearing his throat, patting the spot that was free to be occupied by them.
"After this episode. But please, keep touching? I like it a lot." they fixed the earphone back in their ear, pressing play on the screen of their phone, soothing voice introducing the topic in detail.
"O-of course, Dear." when his hand returned to the small of their back, the soothing motion returning, they hummed blissfully, head placed back on the blanket, the scarf they had on their head fixed to cover them up properly.
"Thank you, Mr. Moore." and if he thought he already scored the jackpot, they kept adding onto the grandest prizes he ever has gotten in his life.
"Dames, I think I forgot to pack my charger." Huxley's pout, even at such a small thing, made his heart break just a little. The sad face didn't suit him at all, and if Damien had any way of preventing it, he would do it every single time.
"You'll just use mine. No big deal."
"But what if both of our phones go dead at the same time?" a small possibility, but apparently, Damien's overthinking rubbed off onto his boyfriend,a making him consider every possible outcome and option.
He thought about it for a moment, hand holding a pair of shorts he intended to change into before leaving the room.
"Then maybe Freelancer will spare us theirs. Or I'll just wait for yours to charge first."
Huxley didn't like the answer he got and it showed.
"What is it?"
"I forgot my shampoo too." he mumbled after taking out the little pouch he packed with toiletries, few pieces missing, just like the smile he always wore.
"Oh no. My gorgeous and handsome man will smell like me then. The misery." the fire elemental just shrugged his shoulders, the process of unpacking his bag continued, few shirts already hung in the closet, next to the ones owned by his partner. They looked good together, the colours matching perfectly. Fashion sense aside, both men really complemented each other in practically every aspect of life.
Damien preferred savoury breakfasts and Huxley indulged in sweet pancakes and oatmeals. The earth elemental loved running early in the day, before the rest of the neighbourhood woke up, and Damien jogged in the evening, when the street lamps were already lighting up the streets. Hux needed noise to work, be it a show he practically remembered the script of playing in the background or just music on low volume, anything but quiet, whereas Damien would lose his mind if anything disturbed his absolute focus. Two sides to the same coin, both valid and respected.
And while Damien always packed and checked with a list for things he could have forgotten or missed, Huxley on the other hand…
"And I don't have my swimming shorts." that, actually, made him stop and drop whatever he was holding, reaching to a compartment inside the bag, pulling out a pair that otherwise would be indeed, left behind.
"I saw them on the washing machine before we left." the spark returned to the other man's eyes, forever grateful to the attentive nature of his boyfriend's organisation. He needed to check everything before leaving, if the toaster was plugged out, if the water was turned off everywhere, if the windows were closed. What may have sounded silly to others, Huxley admired because thanks to it, he was saved on multiple occasions, just like this one.
"You're the best, dude."
"Next time, you're packing with the list."
"I'll, I swear. I'm blaming this one on the brain fog." hearing that, it was Damien's turn to frown. They were supposed to get to the cabin two days ago, with the rest of the crew, but Huxley started to feel bad, summer solstice hitting him a little earlier than it did before. While usually, he just complained about sore muscles and overall aches, this time, it was paired with a brain fog so bad he forgot to take the painkillers Damien brought him, words slipping through his ears in the haze of constant state of being barely awake.
The awful day, instead of being enjoyed on the beach, playing volleyball and hearing Gavin's teasings, was spent on the couch with a fan turned on low to cool the room down, the hum of AC being too much of a noise for his suffering partner. With apologies spilled way too often, Huxley felt more than guilty when Damien took the decision to call the rest and inform them on the slight change of plans. And Lasko's reassurances of Dear's troubling case didn't ease the guilt either.
"Come here big guy." the fire elemental sat down on the big bed, patting the spot next to him, other hand already reaching out towards.
The mattress creaked under Huxley's weight, his arms instantly wrapping around Damien, holding him close where he belonged.
"You know I'll always have you? Even if you forget your own head one day." the tease was lighthearted, followed immediately by a chaste series of kisses, starting at the prominent bone of Huxley's jawline, ending on his lips.
"I love you so much, Dames."
"I love you too, Hux."
"And I'm sor–" a finger was quickly pressed against his mouth, shushing him effectively.
"If I hear one more apology from you, I'm throwing you into the lake. There's nothing to be sorry for. I'm glad you're doing better and your bad solstice is over, so we can enjoy ourselves and our friends for the next few days." they both nuzzled closer, warm skin soothing whatever worries his boyfriend could still think about. With Damien nearby, none of them mattered anyway.
"So now, we unpack, we change our clothes and we're going for a swim. Then, we are getting dinner with others and we're trying out the new game Lasko told us all about. Sounds good?"
"Can we squeeze some cuddles before all that?" his plea was a balm on his ears, a wish he would have to be out of his mind to not grant.
"Of course, baby. Come here."
The bed wasn't as soft as the one they got at their place, but it didn't matter much, when his head hit the home he had with him, always.
"For you, my love." they shuddered at the feeling of his hand grabbing them gently by the waist, something brushing past their temple, settling behind their ear. A flower, one he conjured with a simple thought, magical accessory embedded with his magic.
It matched the colour of his eyes.
"Not as pretty as you, but I can live with that." the pink gleam that shone from between this eyelashes made them shake their head, though they couldn't help but feel touched at the gesture.
"Sap" that, he was. Ever the romantic.
The arm wrapped itself tighter around them, his body soon enough pressing against their own, water droplets sliding down his sides, faint smell of bubblegum always on the demon's skin. They inhaled deeply, chin settling on his shoulder, mind lulled to the flow sound of the water that reached his hips, gentle waves with deep shade of blue littered with white petals that fell from a nearby tree in bloom.
Scene like straight from a fantasy movie, with them both as the main characters.
"I'm so glad we agreed to come. It's so pretty and quiet around here." he hummed in response, holding them tight, his tail playfully wrapping around their leg, the tip tickling the delicate skin on the inside of their thigh, only to settle down right after, no more teasing coming from him.
"Mhm. You all feel so happy." the surge of positive emotions surely was a good thing to experience. The air around them all somehow felt a little lighter, and while his nature did not care for this sort of emotions, the love for each other was also brewing strong.
"You don't?" the concern in their voice made the embrace a little looser, enough that he could lift their face and stare right in their eyes, his own softening at the sight he yearned for every waking moment. And there was many of those, since he didn't need sleep.
"My Deviant, I'm the happiest demon walking on this Earth every time I'm with you. The scenery doesn't matter to me, not when I have you in my arms." before they could say something back, he tutted, his tongue clicking.
"But I must admit…this certainly makes the experience at least ten times better."
He had a point. When he came to them, a devious smirk on his lips and a whispered "I must show you something", they weren't sure what to expect in the first place, his plans often deceitful, ending up in various ways though with the same note. This time, to their surprise, what he had to present them, was a spot. A special one, shaded from the view from the house by the greenery on the edge of a forest, providing more than enough shade.
And due to the late hour, with dinner long gone, and the rest of the friends enjoying the free time on their own, the a flock of fireflies was flickering around, making them gasp every time one flew right past them, the light making their core thrum in a way that made his own sing in unison.
"And you're really telling me there's no magic involved here?" he shook his head, the hair around his horns moving with the notion. In a secluded spot like that, he had no reason to hide them, free to be himself.
"Hard to believe, right?' they tucked a strand behind his ear, head once again pressing itself into the spot they loved the most, his breaths a calming sound that make them want to melt in his arms. He had that effect on them and while it sometimes was a reason to be teased about, he adored the fact. How safe and comfortable they felt with him, to let all their guards down and relax to the point of going limp, muscles lax and soft.
"I wish we could stay here forever. No duties, no chores, just…you, me and this."
"This?" the eyebrow arch came as natural to him as breathing, both Dear and Huxley always jealous of the skill. Once, after a dnd session, they begged him to teach them. Though, he failed, they still tried extremely hard, pulling faces so funny it was hard to stop laughing.
"You're just…Gavin here. Not a steward, not an incubus, just Gavin. And I'm not a student from D.A.M.N or a freelancer but–"
"My Deviant." he interrupted but they nodded in agreement.
"Exactly. No expectations, just warm water, the fireflies and you holding me tight. What's more I can wish for?"
"Oh, I'm sure you'd think about something quickly enough with that brain of yours." a kiss pressed to top of their head to make it better. He had a good point, they couldn't deny that.
"But you're right." fixing the flower to stay behind their ear, he sighed, eyes closing for a moment, just taking it all in. The splash of the water against the shore, the hum of the tree branches, the last rays of the sun warming their skin as a goodbye before the moon took over the sky, with stars as loyal companions.
They would have to go back inside soon, night's chill not an ideal thing to feel against almost bare bodies. The couch in the living room was calling their name, with a set of dry clothes and a glass of iced tea, glass straw clinking against the rim. They would joke about the awful romantic comedy that was bound to be aired, groaning at long commercial breaks, eating whatever snacks were available and left for them by the others.
"Gavin?" his tail rewrapped itself around their leg for more comfortable spot, his hand lowered onto the small of their back, caressing the spot, small circles traced on their sides, few hearts added to add some variety.
Rolling around in the soft grassy fields with Milo. A rare moment of peace for the both of them, work long forgotten as they enjoyed their holiday together.
As the giggles die down, and they lay side by side, cushioned by the grass, Milo turns and picks a wildflower nearby, tucking it behind Sweetheart’s ear and lingering his hand at their cheek.
“You’re so beautiful.”
He says it so earnestly, eyes never straying from theirs. They can see themselves in the reflection of his pupils - he’s sees them. All of them. Always has and always will.
Sweetheart turns to lay on their side, facing him. Their hand reaches up to hold his, still pressed against their cheek.
Milo’s eyes crinkle in the way it does when he’s smiling, and Sweetheart feels the fireworks in their heart as their cores echo each other’s, a song of love and affection, one they’re both plenty familiar with.
He missed this.
He missed them.
Smiling, relaxed, and happy.
He wants to burn their smile into his memory forever.
