My ex broke up with me like 8 months ago, and this painting was halfway through, sitting in my bedroom the whole time. Haven't been able to bring myself to do anything creative ever since - just haven't felt inspired or motivated to touch art, and I think it's because it just takes me a long time to process things. Really thought this girl would be the one, I miss her a lot, and I don't know if I'll ever properly move on, but at least I can touch the paint brush again. I know it's not perfect but I'm working on being less critical about the stuff I do for fun and for me, this painting was a big challenge and I think I did a pretty good job.

It's based on a pinterest shot of some mongolian model, and I just really liked it, so I wanted to paint it. Way more difficult than I first imagined. She has such soft features that I didn't capture very well. Pin: https://pin.it/4kifVvjt5

Y'know, such as defining Existing While Queer as a sex-crime against children. For an extremely non-hypothetical, entirely real world example.

You're not listening to me. If "Pedophiles" are uniquely punished under the law, guess what will immediately happen to the definition of the word "Pedophile?" It will be broadened and broadened until it contains everyone the State does not like.

This is in no way hypothetical; there are a great many american states which are actively pushing legislation to define "being trans" as a form of pedophilia.

Wanna add something here:

Restorative justice isn't just about guarding against state violence, it's also about reframing our approach to crime and punishment in general. The west is a very punitive culture, we strive to dole out appropriate retribution commensurate with the weight of the crime committed, but we shouldn't do that. Not only is it a poorly functioning model, it's also, like, just bad, for everyone.

People who witness the execution of their abusers find that, instead of relief or joy or elation, they generally feel an emptiness inside. There's something traumatising about violence. It feels wrong. When restorative justice is employed, crimes are seen as problems of engineering — Someone in need of correction and mental health services, or discipline, or a family unit, or community, fell through the cracks.

Real justice — the one that separates us from the anarchy of beasts, requires the sublimation of our baser instincts. You need courage, and emotional energy, and strength, to see violence and respond with compassion.

It's why I can understand the 'skinning alive' rhetoric. It makes sense, but I hope that one day we'll be able to avoid the cycle of violence that leaves all of us just sort of, hollow inside. I want to see people permit others to learn, and to grow.

Discworld has ruined me for fantasy. I tried to read a Dungeons and Dragons book about dark elves the other week and got annoyed that everyone except the protagonist was a horrible person.

Discworld was really good at making comic characters. There was no character without a unique behavioural quirk that made its way into the story. They all have their little things that make the discworld such an interesting and colourful place. I’ve read more engrossing, exciting, emotive stories, but I’ve never quite read anything like discworld. It’s some of the mos inventive and creative writing I’ve ever read. Other writing prioritises story over characters and personalities, and often to its benefit, but terry pratchett made stories happen because of his characters.

Well, this year sucked. I failed myself a lot. I am really disappointed in myself. I lost a lot of headwind in my career, I lost confidence in myself and my ability. I left a lot unsaid and undone, I didn’t communicate well, I didn’t plan ahead, and everything I tried, I ended up giving up on.

I had a few short relationships that didn’t last, I had a job for 2 months, then I was adrift for 6 months, then I had a crappy casual job stacking chairs.

I hate my portfolio, I feel depressed and have no self confidence. This year really took it out of me and I feel the fight left me a little. I don’t have the same drive to understand what’s going on with me and try to improve things concretely. I feel small, beaten, hopeless.

I don’t have a plan for next year, I tried to really think one up, but I don’t have a good way of achieving any of the things I want to next year.

I’m scared that the rest of my life is going to be as bad as this year.

I feel lonely, isolated, scared of the world. Going outside is rare for me, seeing friends is basically a non-starter. By saying no to so much this year, I’ve closed myself off entirely. I think I needed to understand and contract this year. I needed to see what I would have done if I’d just lived inside my comfort zone.

I don’t want to do that next year. I really hate leaving my comfort zone, but I might not make it to 2025 if I don’t. I’ve gotta work on being vulnerable.

A few concrete steps I will take next year:

- Therapy babey, gonna make money so I can go back

- Eat good. Cheap, bulk, protein, snacks.

- Yoga, gym.

- Job. I want one. I want it so bad but I don’t feel very lucky right now. I want a job though

Avatar WIP~

Okay, last post was a massive ramble, let's structure.

I'm making a new avatar comic book fanfic thingy, and I'm tredding on the comics and LoK, in my headcanon, these never happened.

The new avatar is a waterbender, but that's the only similarity it shares with LoK. I had some problems with that series and I wanted to create a series that I feel represents the future of the ATLA timeline better.

That's all there is to it right now. Things we're leaving behind in this new series

White-washing. We're sticking to Asian and Inuit influences, and we will consider bringing in other indigenous cultural and mythological influences.

Love triangles. I'm autistic, I'm not interested in bull-headed romantic, teeny nonsense.

Same same but different. There doesn't need to be a team avatar, there doesn't need to be a new appa, these may come up, but I'm not focused on recreating the old show, I just want a really original piece of media.

Spiritual commodification. No spirit portals! what kinda crap is that? Ugh. LoK trampled all over the nuanced and cryptic and weird spirit world of ATLA, and I'll never forgive it for that.

Wacky new tech. I'm not that interested in the arms race idea from LoK. I don't think it should be a central plot point in a world where people can move stuff and heal people with their minds. A world like that would have much less need for a sudden industrial revolution and *cough* platinum... giant... death robots?

Okay, so that's the main stuff. I'm working on an outline right now, just started today, but i already love the way it's going. Will update later!

PPS. Name of Magic is still happening, I just like to have lots on the go because I get bored easily.

Also also, have been thinking about creating an Avatar comic. I was never a fan of the korra story and the direction they took it, but I'm also not a huge fan of the comics that came after the show. It's difficult to continue the excellence of the original show's story. I've always had a lot to say about the show and its writing and it had a huge impact on me. I've watched a million video essays on how it was good and LOK wasn't so much, and I've always felt like I have a unique perspective on the whole shebang, and hey, thought I'd try my hand at a more mature new avatar series.

I'm no illustrator either, so this might be a bit of an insane task, but I wanna give it a shot anyway, try to learn as I go, and focus on the story mostly.

I don't want to go down the white washing route where the focus is on technological advancements and their impact on society, which is apparently just recreating 20s new york (what happens in LoK). I would like to see a story that takes place in a world inspired by various asian and inuit cultures. I've been doing some research on Tibet, China, Japan and Tribal inuit cultures and want to use these as source materials, like the original show did. My desire is to see more representation of Inuit myths in the avatar world, and I want to explore themes of violence, harmony, balance, and what that means in an authoritarian state. I believe that a more mature story wouldn't just have more love triangle crap, or ptsd, which is all well and good, but it would explore large-scale philosophically complex geopolitical problems. That's one of the things I loved so much about the show, the story was simple, but it revealed so much about ideas like what it means to be yourself, how to wrestle with your own faith, how to grieve and mourn and find solace in a war-torn world, how to achieve balance in your own soul despite a tumultuous upbringing.

Hi so, christmas. Went home to my mum's and we had a low-key chrissy with her and my antisemitic grandpa. Was an emotionally exhausting time, found solace in my cat, and was unable to be creative really. I did have a bit of time to work on the Name of Magic, which I talked about in my last post. The outline is giving it a good and nice and healthy structure which will hopefully allow me to write like mad when I sit down next.

Also I got COVID, which is apparently still around, so I got to get out of christmas lunch, which is something.

Anyway, TLDR; I wanted to be creative, but couldn't over the holiday period.

Just got back yesterday and after some serious spring cleaning I'll be ready to get back to all my projects! Yay!

The name of Magic

This is my current priority WIP. I've been writing this for ages, making little headway, and being very precious about all the words in it. I'm finally shaking off all the crap and delving headfirst. Honestly, sometimes the 'moment of inspiration' that helps you write one perfect gleaming passage can hamper the rest of the project because you care too much about what you've already written. It's happened to me with this one. But since I'm finally getting somewhere with the backend of the planning-y stuff, let's start it off.

Synopsis:

A desolate world is no longer a place for humanity to survive. A final and suspiciously well-kept vestige sits atop a sheer cliff, surrounded by mountains on three sides. The city of Ragusa is a gleaming, gaudy, absurd collection of rules, mental illness, and perfectly manicured hedges.

Magic is almost not worth mentioning, it happens all the time and means almost nothing to anyone. But our, uh, hero? Arast is uniquely talented at Magic, which in a society that trims its hedges of any overly ambitious branches, that can land you in hot water. In Arast's case it lands him outside the city, over the mountains, on a "quest" given to him by the King. He and his friend Jelly are on a mission to find and slay a marauding wildebeast for the King when they discover something dark about their suspicious city. Perhaps the city's acute perfection of civic architecture was too good to be true.

I want to try to post about this every now and then, I've been keen on writing this for ages, it's just always been a really difficult one for the kind of premise I've gone with.

I feel like I've come up with a really unique magic system that I want to use to explore contemporary issues in society, but that's lofty, because my main goal, is to finally write something I just want to write, that I enjoy writing. Something silly, cerebral, clever, altogether unserious, and varied. That's what I'm looking for.

This project has no real demographic, I just want to write it for myself, but the motivation to write it for others and internet strangers helps.

I dunno if this counts as a writing tip, but I am profoundly ignorant of characters and personalities. I don’t notice them in my friends, and I definitely don’t know how to write them, so what I usually do is pick just one characteristic, with which my character will respond to anything

I’m at the airport waiting to pick up my bro and his partner and I’m people watching, here are some thoughts:

The airport is widely regarded as the transport hub. And this might give you the false impression that it is a place of movement.

In reality, the airport is a psychological machine that evaluates everyone’s intention to move from one place to another, and determines the route that is most likely to induce a profound psychological anguish.

A pram and suitcase in toe, you might find yourself expecting the masses to part like the red sea, so that you may reach the taxi ranks. But you are mistaken, because a man in front of you with a vague grin and a transitory awareness of his own location is deciding whether he wants to go to T4 or T2 for international departures. And a woman will promptly reunite with her family in front of the exit doors moments later.
