Black people must adopt this more!! I never realized how many times my symptoms have been dismissed
Once my friend Henry was accused of wearing wireless headphones by a substitute so she said for him to hand them over so he took them off and handed them to her. Then later on she asked him a question and he didnât respond so she said it louder and he still didnât respond. She asked why he was not responding and he said âI canât understand you ma'am, you took my hearing aids.â
HOLY SHIT
one time we had a sub that was handing back papers and called my name. I asked if someone could grab it for me and she started mocking me for not even standing up. taunting me asking why I was not walking up to the front to get the paper myself.
my classmates went dead silent and after the subâs laughter ended someone informed her that the wheelchair parked nearby belonged to me
My sister once had her insulin pump ripped off of her because her exam proctor (a sub) thought it was some cheating device. He soon figured out that it was, in fact, not, when the port on her side (the place the needle goes in) started bleeding through her shirt. Her pump started beeping frantically, because thatâs what it does, and it was general chaos until my sister ripped whatâs basically her pancreas out of his hands, told her friend âLet the next proctor know Iâll need extra time,â and walked out of the room towards the nurse.
Literally schools are shit with disabilities. In elementary school I was having a high blood sugar reaction(cold sweats to rapid passing in and out of consciousness, vomiting and finally leading to a massive seizure before you die) and I KNEW I had to go to the nurse cuz I was getting worse. Kept telling my teach I needed to go and he kept saying no till finally I felt myself about to throw up and Iâm screaming LET ME GO (i was a little kid to me i couldnt do anything in an institution without an adults say so or id basically go to hell) and the bitch said SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE LESSON where I proceeded to projectile vomit all over my desk and he jut kept going on with the lesson. Finally I just booked it out of the room but I was too far gone to even REMEMBER where the nurses office was let alone where the hell I was that my class literally just left and helped me to the nurses office. I immediately went to the hospital and officially died for 5 minutes before I was revived. I could have stayed dead all because some fuck twad thought his lesson was more important than a students life
After Columbine, a local school installed metal detectors and made everyone walk through them and put their bags on a table for a teacher to search.Â
A few days into the school year, a teacher ripped a boyâs insulin pump off him because she thought it was a weapon, despite he and his sister insisting it was an insulin pump and he needed it to live.Â
I donât know how many of you are still in school but I have some valuable knowledge that might actually help with this problem! In the United States thereâs this thing called a 504 Plan that you can get which basically gives you legal protection from disability/chronic illness discrimination in public schools.Â
Students can qualify for 504 plans if they have physical or mental impairments that affect or limit any of their abilities to: walk, breathe, eat, or sleep; communicate, see, hear, or speak; read, concentrate, think, or learn; stand, bend, lift, or work
Examples of accommodations in 504 plans include: preferential seating, extended time on tests and assignments, reduced homework or classwork, verbal, visual, or technology aids, modified textbooks or audio-video materials, behavior management support, adjusted class schedules or grading, verbal testing, excused lateness, absence, or missed classwork
Iâm a type one diabetic and my school nurse would do stuff like keep all my meds in a locked cabinet, not let me take my insulin or test my blood sugar unless she was watching me, and lie to my mother about me inducing low blood sugars in order to get out of class. She wouldnât even let me keep glucagon (emergency sugar injection) on my person in case I passed out from low blood sugar.Â
So one day I casually mentioned all this to my endocrinologist and she was really mad. She was really angry at the school nurse for mistreating me like that and informed me of this thing called a 504 plan. A 504 plan protects students with disabilities and chronic illnesses from discrimination by outlining exactly what a student needs to meet their special needs. For me, this meant I had to be able to keep ahold of my own meds in case of emergency and keep track of my own glucose levels, that I would never be marked late for a class if I was busy treating a low, and I could pause the clock on a standardized test to check my blood sugar and treat it. If you have a disability and youâre still attending public school, PLEASE read up on 504 plans because they saved me so much grief when I was still in school. It might help you too. Hereâs some more information about 504 plans:

Passing this along. I would not have made it this far without my disability documentation in school.
This is really important to know so hell yeah Iâm reblogging
This is fucking OUTRAGEOUS YOU GUYS

Itâs INSANE to me how controversial romance novels are. Romance novels. Like, being openly a fan of them immediately opens you up to people constantly coming at you like âbut donât you think itâs ~limiting- and ~juvenile~ to have a genre of books with happy endings for women?â
Like.
No?
Why is it such a big deal to want to read stories where women have sex and then donât die at the end? Jesus Christ.
Why is the concept of female characters being happy seen as less creative than female characters suffering? (Trust me, creating a world where women win in the end takes a lot more creativity and artistic vision lmfao)
Anyway, literary bros will pry my romance novels with their happy endings from my cold dead fingers.
Or die in the very beginning of the book. But no one calls out James Patterson for writing another formulaic thriller in which a woman is horrifically killed after getting laid and then some man solves her murder. Every. Damn. Time.
But hey, those romance novels where women get happy endings are so limiting, eh?
Real talk: realizing how common it is for female characters to be punished for on-the-page sex with death was a big part of my embracing the romance genre. Once I noticed it I couldnât unnotice it. Itâs everywhere. A woman having sex in literature or non-romance genre fiction is the literary equivalent of a red shirt on Star Trek.

Florida? I find that hard to believe.
I literally took this picture
The RNC sent me a notice of official census material that was actually a fundraiser for the republican candidates running in the midterms. The paperwork was presented as being an official document required to be filled out by law, but it was patently false. This is corruption. This is meant to deceive people into giving data and money to a political party under the guise of nonpartisan census data. This undermines trust in the census, local government, and the democratic process. This is beyond disgusting, and Iâm mailing back the form to tell the RNC how I really feel about their bullshit.
Signal boost. LOOK OUT FOR THIS BULLSHIT!
I honestly always find the term âspinsterâ as referring to an elderly, never-married woman as funny because you know what?
Wool was a huge industry in Europe in the middle ages. It was hugely in demand, particularly broadcloth, and was a valuable trade good. A great deal of wool was owned by monasteries and landed gentry who owned the land.Â
And, well, the only way to spin wool into yarn to make broadcloth was by hand.Â
This was viewed as a feminine occupation, and below the dignity of the monks and male gentry that largely ran the trade.Â
So what did they do?
They hired women to spin it. And, turns out, this was a stable job that paid very well. Well enough that it was one of the few viable economic options considered ârespectableâ outside of marriage for a woman. A spinster could earn quite a tidy salary for her art, and maintain full control over her own money, no husband required.Â
So, naturally, women who had little interest in marriage or men? Grabbed this opportunity with both hands and ran with it. Of course, most people didnât get this, because All Women Want Is Husbands, Right?
So when people say âspinsterâ as in âspinster auntâ, they are TRYING to conjure up an image of a little old lady who is lonely and bitter.Â
But what I HEAR are the smiles and laughter of a million women as they earned their own money in their own homes and controlled their own fortunes and lived life on their own terms, and damn what society expected of them.Â
I hope this a shit post cause thatâs not even close to being true.

This.
This is very important.
I didnât know Mr. T pityed foolâs that werenât woke, but thatâs awesome. #respect
âI think about my father being called âboyâ, my uncle being called âboyâ, my brother, coming back from Vietnam and being called âboyâ. So I questioned myself: âWhat does a black man have to do before heâs given the respect as a man?â So when I was 18 years old, when I was old enough to fight and die for my country, old enough to drink, old enough to vote, I said I was old enough to be called a man. I self-ordained myself Mr. T so the first word out of everybodyâs mouth is âMr.â Thatâs a sign of respect that my father didnât get, that my brother didnât get, that my mother didnât get.â
-Mr. T on the subject of his name
anyway itâs fine for disabled people toâŠ.not want jobs. itâs not a fucking crime.
the fact that itâs normalised for the disabled and mentally ill to be grilled by private contractors to get pittance from an all-seeing wing of the government is terrifying. more so when that wing punishes the smallest transgressions so severely that it condemns the victim to death or suicide.
the scariest thing of all though? public apathy to our thousands of deaths. itâs fucking nauseating.
If youâre reblogging it because you respect it, cool. If not, hereâs why you should: Britney Spears was a child star who was rocketed into extreme celebrity at a young age. It isnât all to shocking to hear that she didnât have a ton of time to learn math, because if you were like fifteen and all your time was spent in photo shoots and on press tours you probably wouldnât find a ton of time for homework, either. Sheâs been to hell and back through the media, and now sheâs just trying to be a good mother. I absolutely respect the fact that sheâs becoming more educated to help her sons, because thatâs a devoted parent. There are parents out there who donât care at all and would let their kid struggle alone, and itâs heartwarming to hear about parents who try their best not to let that happen. Leave her be.
Awww
i love sir patrick stewart more with each passing day.
See, guys. This is how you do it. Notice the words âNot all men are like thatâ are never spoken.
He knows men are like that
his father was like that to his mother
he has experienced the pain firsthand, of what itâs like when men are like that
and he never wants men to be like that again and he fights tooth and nail against the men who are still like that
And moreover, he acknowledges his privilege [as an older white male who is famous/well known] and uses it to speak up. He knows what he is, and he never has to say heâs not like those men he fights againstâhe never says it, his actions speak loud enough for everyone else to see it.Â
It should be the exception, not the rule
âI feel like Iâm working towards my death. The constant demands on my time since 5th grade are just going to continue through graduation, into college, and then into my job. Itâs like Iâm on an endless treadmill with no time for living.â
âHow long is your childâs workweek? Thirty hours? Forty? Would it surprise you to learn that some elementary school kids have workweeks comparable to adultsâ schedules? For most children, mandatory homework assignments push their workweek far beyond the school day and deep into what any other laborers would consider overtime. Even without sports or music or other school-sponsored extracurriculars, the daily homework slog keeps many students on the clock as long as lawyers, teachers, medical residents, truck drivers and other overworked adults. Is it any wonder that, deprived of the labor protections that we provide adults, our kids are suffering an epidemic of disengagement, anxiety and depression?â
Reblogging because, speaking as an autistic person, most of my meltdowns at school came from homework.
Math homework in particular, which gives me the hypothesis that the time we spend teaching math at levels far above what students are going to need in their daily lives and the amount of homework accompanying such is a part of the problemâŠ
Yeah my time in education taught me that homework is kind of a waste of everyoneâs time. It canât be relied on for assessment/evaluation purposes because thereâs no reliable way for a teacher to know the student didnât copy off of someone else, and it canât be used for instruction because the student works on it when the teacher isnât around to give, well, instruction. Like standardized testing, itâs basically a pointless relic of a very outdated model of education that America and other countries still cling to because adapting modern techniques costs more money, time, and effort than theyâre willing to give.
Down with homework.
