Mermaids by Erte

Romain de Tirtoff was a Russian born artist (1892)) who moved to Paris around the age of 20. He did this against the wishes of his parents who wanted him to enter the navy. So as not to disgrace his parents, he used the pseudonym “Erte” (the French pronunciation if his initials RT or “er te”).

He had a long career encompassing scenery and costume design (including gowns for the actress Mata Hari); over 200 cover illustrations for Harper’s magazine; Hollywood films on the 1920s; and jewelry and statues.

During the 1960s though 1980s he became very popular in the collectible art print market - creating innumerable limited edition lithographs.
