Lagerfeld for Chanel. Fall 2005. Wedding Dress. This dress was entirely hand made. THE WHOLE THING. Each flower takes 90 minutes to make and there are 2,500 flowers on this dress. Two historical ateliers contributed to this gown, Maison Lemarié and Maison Lesage. Maison Lemairé was responsible for producing the camellias while Maison Lesage applied them to the dress along with some barely visible sequins. Continuing with the Beauty and the Beast theme, these two ensembles capture the era in which the story is set. So often fairytales are shifted and adapted to a contemporary aesthetic, that the original context is all but forgotten. The men's three piece court suit on the left is dated circa 1785. And the women's robe à la française on the right is dated 1755-1760. Despite the beast being, well, beastly and Beauty's humble origins, the fairytale describes the lavish environment of the Beast's palace which would have implied outfits such as these. This Spring 2007 Rodarte dress is inspired by the theme of roses in the "Beauty and the Beast" story. These roses are crafted from organza, creating a visually interesting 3D addition to the dress. Famously the plot of "Beauty and the Beast" is motivated by Beauty wanting a rose from her father as a token of his trip, this rose ends up being the catalyst for her imprisonment by the Beast. A little more Red Riding Hood My previous post showed a red cloak from the 1700s and yet it does not look too different from these 20th/21st century creations. While people may no longer wear vibrant red cloaks on a daily basis, the striking garment persists on the runway. The cloak on the left is a Giorgio di Sant'Angelo creation from the 1970s. Sant'Angelo opted for a folkloric inspiration, adding embroidery around the hood and opening of the cloak.
