Nygmobblepot beach headcanons! 🦀
Oswald only agrees to visit the nearest beach in summer for Ed's sake. He would rather stay in the city and hide from the sunlight and overbearing heat. Out of necessity he changes into swimwear, but spends the whole day beneath an extravagant, oversized umbrella with round sunglasses perched on his nose and a book in his lap. He doesn't do much reading at first, too fixed on the spectacle of Edward in swimming trunks and with his hair loose and curling.
Ed enjoys swimming, and when he's not in the water he can spend hours combing through the sand, hunting shells and pebbles until he has an impressive collection. He brings the prettiest specimens back to Oswald, reminding him about the tendency of penguins to gift pebbles to their mates, something that makes Oswald chuckle. While outwardly nonchalant, he finds the trove of shiny rocks precious and plans to take them all back home that night.
While he's normally more organized at their pool, Ed gets so distracted by the environment of a beach that he forgets practicalities. Oswald has to keep calling him out of the sea to get a fresh round of sunscreen applied, and Ed always kisses him when he ducks under the umbrella, tasting of saltwater and mint, ready to share random facts about marine life and geology that occurred to him moments ago.
Once he's done swimming, Ed sets up near Oswald and starts building intricate sand sculptures (he dislikes the texture of sand on his palms, but can cope with it when he has a task to focus on). He crafts impressive replicas of famous Gotham buildings, and even makes a sand-penguin with a top hat. When Oswald wakes from his nap to see that, it sends him into a laughing fit.
Since Oswald refuses to move, Ed's in charge of jogging to the nearest food shack and getting them provisions - though Oswald only wants sweet things like ice cream and fruit juice, and grumbles at Ed getting hot dogs because they're too messy (Ed ends up eating both of them, and Oswald makes a point of dabbing his chin with a napkin afterwards, giving him an unimpressed look).
With the sun finally setting, Ed cleans off the worst of the sand from his skin and curls up next to Oswald, joining him for another nap with a green towel draped across both of them.
Years after their first beach trip, they take a real vacation out of Gotham and stay at a lavish hotel with beach access. Ed convinces Oswald to discard his shoes and socks after dinner and join him for a leisurely stroll in the sand. They reminisce about how long it's been since the last time, hand-in-hand as they stop to watch the sun dip beneath the horizon. Oswald leans against Ed's chest, letting arms wrap around him securely. Ed rests his chin on Oswald's head and tells him the sunset could never be more beautiful than he is, prompting Oswald to admonish him for the cheesy line - but he smiles all the same.
The world is literally on fire rn but at least these two fools can be happy together. 🐚
