I put together this little rig for some electroacoustic exploration this week. I’m going to use the percussion interface module to control my sequencer which will in turn step through a preset melody at random intervals. People ask me all the time if the kind of box I use to build my instruments makes a difference in how they sound and for the most part I’ve been agnostic on the subject. The differences I experienced weren’t all that dramatic so I didn’t think about it all that much. Until NOW. This instrument, The Sputnik, is something I designed nearly two months ago and it was a PAIN to build. It was hard to drill holes in the metal box, I had to do a ton of sanding and even though I like the overall design it just sounds extremely harsh to my ears. It was a bit of a challenge to tame it enough for this video but I knew there had to be some music in there somewhere. Honestly, I’m torn. On one hand, I want to harvest all the parts off this instrument and mount it on a wooden box to see what a difference that would make. On the other hand, I kind of want to accept it for what it is: a harsh noise instrument that in the right hands could be used to make industrial drum beats among many other things. Dunno. Guess I’ll sit on it for a little while longer before I decide.
