I actually have a question about composition. I've written pieces before (for orchestra and small ensembles), but recently I've hit a spell of writers' block. Are there any suggestions for coming up with new ideas or finding inspiration for new melodies? Any help is much appreciated :)
Allow me to start this by saying that I am NOT a composer. I do, however, arrange music frequently, and I also write (words, not music). So combining those two experiences, here are some things that may help:
1) Listen to music. Listen to things you know, and ask friends to give you recommendations for pieces you’ve never heard before. Just listen. And if you feel up to it, do a bit of analyzation. Try to figure out why the composer did certain things, and how the different sounds work together.
2) Arrange something. Pick a song, pick an ensemble that it wasn’t originally scored for, and just arrange it. Once you’ve got the basics down, start adding in countermelodies, or redo the bass line, or just add in an expansion. Working on something that already exists, but adding to it, can be a great starting point to help you get back on track. And who knows, maybe one of the countermelodies you add in could end up being the melody of the next thing you write.
Just as an example, I’ve actually done #2 recently, although not due to compositional writer’s block– because I was bored. :) Those of you who watch the TV show “Castle” will probably recognize this music instantly. For those of you who don’t, this is the “I Just Want You” theme. Link to the original here.
The theme is just TV background music, so it’s not all that interesting, and it’s voiced for only piano, cello, and drums. I decided to make it more interesting and score it for full orchestra. I started with the original theme, then maaaaaaaaaajorly expanded it. I also added in two sets of countermelodies, in addition to all of the new instruments, and I think it really worked out. Link to my arrangement here.
So if you’re stuck, try doing something like that– take a piece you already know and make it your own. It could inspire you to create something new and help you get through your writer’s block. But even if it doesn’t, it’s still fun to do!
Those of you who do compose, please feel free to add to this!
(and if you listen to my arrangement, keep in mind that those are Finale instruments you’re hearing, so it will sound kinda funny)
I’m going to retroactively tack onto this.
Personally when I get writers block, I try to just do something not related to composition. Usually when I do something non-music related, I end up getting inspired to write a new piece.
