Music Major Problem #41 Hearing the Dr. Beat in the crickets and in your blinker and in yoUR DREAMS
We started full rehearsals for our winter concert this week and I can't help but get chills when we put all three choirs and the different instruments together. Sometimes I get so caught up listening to it all that I nearly forget to come in, lol. It makes me so excited to be a director someday because I will basically get paid to listen to music all the time and if that's not a dream job, I don't know what is.
No doubt. My choir recently did Requiem for the Living and it was amazing to hear the live orchestra for the first time XD
Dumb band situations: I, a metal bassist who can't read music, got recruited against my will into the high school jazz band when I was already so overloaded with classwork that I was pulling all-nighters more nights than not. I tried to quit three times and was told 'no', my mum ended up emailing the conductor to make her let me quit after I almost got a concussion falling asleep while practising. The one recital I played was a disaster as well, but it won't fit into this ask.
Wow, that sounds horrible. I am sorry you experienced that.

You could do an advice or q/a style channel, where you give advice to people who are maybe starting out or high-schoolers looking to major in music, or anyone currently majoring (We all need help sometimes)
I have been considering that. But that would require a production team which I am not sure I can get at the moment. Star suggestion though. That is probably the sort of content we would do. XD
It's the most wonderful time of the year!!
Finals and concerts and Juries oh my! December is an interesting time of year for all students but especially for musicians. There is so much on all of your plates, it is a wonder anything gets done. But music majors are a breed apart, am I right?
So in an effort to cut through some of that stress, why don’t you guys reblog and share some of your favorite stories from your adventure in music making! It can be funny, inspiring, or anything at all. We want to hear YOUR experiences XD.
I think my most rewarding moment was taking Conducting I as a sophomore last spring. We conducted “Surely He Has Borne Our Griefs” from Messiah. Something just clicked in me that day and I really brought raw emotion and energy to my test. Everyone looked shocked and my mentor looked so proud. He told me after class that I found the spark he had seen in me from the day we meant when I was in high school.
What I really think when ever I have to sing this song….
Merry Christmas

Okay so I figured I should add my own story here.
This happened in 2011, Sept. 11 2011 to be precise. It was my sophomore year and my first performance with my school’s top ranked competition choir. We were guests at a 9/11 memorial banquet and had a set of only three songs. The last of which was a rendition of America the Beautiful…
Now, I was a rather tall girl. And as such, I had never worn any sort of heel before that day. I also do not have the greatest of balance. So when they stuck me on the top row with those heels on, I was a little unsteady.
I also never really understood why you don’t lock your knees….
I went through the first two songs fine, my feet were killing me but I dealt with it. It wasn’t until we were transitioning into the final piece that it started.
I began to feel dizzy, no big deal, I hadn’t eaten breakfast that morning. But it got worse and I whispered to my friend next to me that something was off. Next my vision started to go, then my hearing… next thing I knew I was being told to sit down by multiple people, most of whom were holding onto me.
I fainted. In the climax of our final piece, I fainted.
I never lived it down either. I was the cautionary tale to all the incoming members.
Don’t lock your knees.

The very first time I performed in college was for the Honors Recital my freshman year. I was super proud. I a nice semi-formal dress and did my hair up all nice. Went on stage, beaming as the audience applauded. I bowed and… My dress came unzipped. I performed the entire aria with an open dress. Then had to walk offstage. Thankfully, the accompanist noticed and walked immediately behind me so not many people saw. Bless her.

I marched the Veteran’s Day Parade in New York and was dying from exhaustion because I was smol and weak and they had us wait for traffic to pass in front of us for fifteen minutes while we played and then I stepped in a pothole right in front of a big news camera and nearly tripped and then my high G turned into a fart noise. Also during my first year of marching band I shrugged off the pain of first-time slides by whispering swear words into my horn and I didn’t realize that my horn worked much like a megaphone so allllll of the upperclassmen heard what I was saying and nearly died from laughter when telling me abiut it afterwards…
I had my first concert as a student teacher yesterday and things could have gone better, but in the end I was just so proud of them and of myself for everything we all learned this semester. It made me sure that, despite all the struggles of studying education and music and being a performer, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Congratulations! You should be very proud you have reached this milestone in your life XD.And figuring out you are in the right line of work is a wonderful thing. Always remember this when the world has you down. You have a purpose, and you have touched the lives of those students. Thank you so much for sharing!

Here’s a very short story for you from back in my college days. At the end of the spring semester, the whole trombone studio was auditioning for the ensembles for the next year. It was the end of my freshman year and I had the misfortune of going after one of the best seniors (he was doing his degree in five years, so going into his super-senior year). I sat outside the audition room and listened to what was the most beautiful trombone music I had ever heard in my life up to that point. I was almost moved to tears, it was so good.
And as he left the audition room, as soon as the door closed, the first words out of his mouth were “that sounded like ASS.”
Which helps me remember that sometimes, we sound a lot better than we think we do.
Expanding, merchandise, and more!
I am incredibly astounded and grateful for the community that has grown here on music major problems. Every time I look at the follower count I am amazed. 3.5k and growing everyday, even when this blog isn't as active as it could be. For the past few months I have been racking my brain on how to help this community grow and create a network of amazing people connected for their passion for music. As such, I have come up with a few ideas. 1) A subreddit. I would love to create a safe space for all of you to talk to one another and share your experiences from school or anything else in the music relm. I feel a subreddit could be a great place to start that. 2) A Facebook group. This would be less of a community forum than reddit, but would be more inclusive as Facebook is a more popular platform. And therefore more accessible. 3) A YouTube channel This will be much further down the line as I am currently unsure of what kind of content will be produced. If you have any ideas. Please feel free to message me. 4) Music Major Problems Swag T-shirts, hoodies, stickers and more! The designs will be based off of some of the more popular problems and other music related things. The proceeds will go to keeping the blog running and allow me to dedicate more time to the blog as a whole. Please let me know if any of you would be interested in these ideas. Feedback is an amazing thing and I would adore it if you liked, reblogged, or even message me concerning the above. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and all your finals go well ~Alex
