It seems that I have been sucked into a black hole of waitressing, deadlines and trying to catch up on sleep alongside uni. As some of you may know, this blog has turned into more of a portfolio of published work. Therefore now, links will be posted onto the pages to the original pieces as opposed to being edited and published again on the blog.

INTERVIEW: PEACE

It’s chucking it down, but we’re in Leicester so that’s not news. Backstage at the O2 Academy I find Peace, seemingly not used to the afternoon hours in the day and discussing massage plans.

Drummer, Dominic Boyce, lays on a couch next to me like he’s in a therapy session. Front-man Harrison Koisser swaggers in and takes the bar stool throne.

Since forming back in 2009, the four piece (Brothers Harrison Koisser (vocals, guitar) and Sam Koisser (bass), Doug Castle (guitar) and Dom Boyce (drums)) have shot to fame and quickly kickstarted the rise of the whole ‘B-Town’ scene. Despite being from Worcester. But that’s by the by.

The opening tune to 'Bloodshake' rattled indie fanatics and EP Delicious was made.

Signing to Columbia Records, releasing two further albums In Love and Happy People and having crowds of teenagers clinging to their every word – somehow this seems to be just the beginning.

Living on a bus with a vigorous touring schedule, taking Peace’s live show around the globe apparently isn’t all that when it comes to culture.

INTERVIEW: D.I.D

Many of us have been scratching our heads and tapping our fingers in eager anticipation to hear new material from Nottingham’s Dog Is Dead. Though, little did we know back then that Dog Is Dead were to re-emerge as D.I.D, and return with an EP about fast food.

Since critically acclaimed debut album All Our Favourite Stories hit indie shelves back in 2012, tracks like ‘Teenage Daughter’ and ‘Glockenspiel Song’ have dominated club speakers. The punchy full length glittered with saxophone solos, highlife guitars and quirky coming-of-age lyricism.

Many of us were shocked when it was revealed that alt country star Ryan Adams had decided to record Taylor Swift’s bestselling album ‘1989’, his way.

Since Swift’s release last October, Adams has admitted to having connected to the album on a tour that was way too long.

With a long and lonely Christmas and New Year ahead of him, reimagining the album became his project. We all know what a workaholic that man can be.

After way over a month of teasers and countdowns, from both parties, it has finally arrived. Swift’s 80s kissed, synth-lathered and quirk-ridden gem of pop has been transformed.

Though, “They’re not cover songs,” Swift insisted, appearing on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show with Adams. “They’re reimaginings of my songs, and you can tell that he was in a different place emotionally than I was.”

If anything, the record highlights Swift’s often overlooked lyricism, it highlights the sugar-coated heartbreak and the stories beneath the beat.

TOP TEN JAMES BOND THEME SONGS

After months of speculation and anticipation, it was revealed only this morning that the latest James Bond theme song will be the child of Sam Smith.

The multi-platinum selling artist has teamed with Grammy Award winner Jimmy Napes to create ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ for forthcoming SPECTRE.

The 24th Bond adventure follows James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, after discovering a cryptic message from the past. Here he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal.  Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.

After 23 previous Bond theme songs, the tracks are considered some of the most memorable movie music of all time.

Smith takes on the challenge as the first British male solo artist since Tom Jones in 1965.

Making its debut September 25th, before release in the UK with the film on October 26th, we take a look back at the top ten previous Bond title songs. Just to add the pressure.

ALBUM REVIEW: DARWIN DEEZ - DOUBLE DOWN

★★★★☆

We often find insight in the strangest of places. Some may claim that a crisp has the face of Jesus and it lead to an epiphany, others dream of - I don’t know, a goldfish - and somehow it has to represent something.

Though how about having a change of heart whilst listening to a Darwin Deez album?

Frontman Darwin Smith, indie/pop groover, has never been known to take himself too seriously. Having recorded, performed, mixed and mastered the entirety of third album Double Down with a DIY approach, there’s fun, there’s experimenting, there’s a message and there’s a small bit of weirdness.

INTERVIEW: THE WOMBATS!

“If we understood girls we’d have a hell of a lot less need to write songs!” jokes The Wombat’s drummer Daniel Haggis.

Since forming in Liverpool back in 2003, the indie poppers have acted like life coaches for all of us young lovers out there.

Latest release ‘Glitterbug’, titled after how lead singer Matthew Murphy, or Murph to family members and the most hardcore of fans, could only describe his emotions, dropped earlier this year. 

Dan sees the release as “two and a half years of hard work and graft, and lots of hard work making it!”

The dictionary defines ‘semantics’ as ‘the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning.’ Any media student will be all too aware.

With the study of meaning in mind, minus the Harvard Referencing System, Bimingham post punks ‘Semantics’ are suitably named.

INTRODUCING: FRANCES

Frances recently celebrated turning 22, a mighty success on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart and capturing the hearts of the nation via the amazon.co.uk advert. That lil kid though. Cutie.There has been an abundance of young acoustic singer/songwriters over the past couple of years, that’s impossible to deny. All come with the same promise of raw lyricism of heart break, wise beyond their years, and poignant falsetto.

Debut single ‘Grow’ highlights self-proclaimed ‘singer-songwriter/piano woman’ Frances’ gorgeously simplistic approach to making music, with no added frills.

Lyrics are brave from the core and outwards, penned with confidence with no qualms. Even when confessing her deepest thoughts.

REVIEW: Sextile ‘A Thousand Hands’

Astrologically speaking, sextile is of or relating to the position of two celestial bodies when they are 60° apart. Musically speaking, Sextile are LA based post punk rockers who refuse to go unheard.

Making their entrance, debut album A Thousand Hands drops this Friday on Felte Recordings. It’s a record that is both hauntingly bewitching and scarily real.
