Could you explain the premise of Babylon Berlin? You post about it a lot but I’d never heard of it before.
is a detective in 20s Germany dealing with debilitating PTSD from his service in WWI (and possibly also a fucked up childhood, there are some depressing implications) which he’s medicating with Serious Drugs that still aren’t really helping.
When the show starts, he’s in the Vice unit and he’s been sent to Berlin by his father to investigate some Compromising Photographs of local politicians who happen to be family friends, obtain the negatives and all copies of the photos, and destroy them.
(When he completes that task he discovers a lot more than he bargained for and decides to fuck off and stay in Berlin because he’s...marginally less miserable there, at which point he promptly gets swept up in a whole web of Increasing Bullshit.)
While in Berlin he meets her
a temp/sex worker/amateur detective trying to get a full-time job with the police, and gets drawn into helping with the murder she’s trying to solve.
Meanwhile there’s a whole secondary plot where these two
Russian revolutionaries in exile are competing with several others including the Soviet government, a proto-Nazi paramilitary group that includes several high-ranking police officers (who’s surprised? not me), and this guy
aka Crime Daddy to get a train that may or may not be full of gold.
So in summation - 20s Berlin is not that much different from 20-teens America but the fashion is way better.
Also Detective Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms is sleeping with his dead brother’s widow and his psychiatrist is drugging him and fucking with his head in a series of highly unethical medical experiments.
It’s all on Netflix and it’s so good.
