âBack surgery. Theyâre really old.â Haven responds quickly, hoping he wonât ask more about her friend.
They keep walking and she stays on the lookout for any maps. Itâs relieving that his next question is about herself and not her friend.
Teacher?
No.
âIâm a nursing homeâŠâŠnurse.  You know, giving old people their medicine, organizing bingo nights. Very simple, nothing like your job. But with lots of dignity, itâs great. Thatâs where I know my friend from.â
Oh ginger snaps, I hope he doesnât start talking all Medical-y.
âSo what do you do when youâre not saving lives and all that good stuff?â
âWell you were on the right floor. Â But if you check in with the front desk they can tell you what room your friend is in.â He gave her a helpful smile.
But it quickly faded when her mind couldnât even be straight about her occupation. Â âAhh so instead of wandering halls here you wander halls of nursing homes? Â But that sounds like a fun and rewarding job. Â Do you like it?â
He paused to think about it. Â âHonestly Iâm kind of boring. Â I just go home and watch tv or something. Â Nothing too special. Â What about you?â
âThank you, Iâll be sure to do that after I buy the flowers.â She smiles graciously. Sheâs spent almost her entire life lying and knows the best lies are half truths, so when the handsome doctor asks more about her âoccupationâ, Haven nods and tries not to think too much about what sheâs gonna say. âI do. I mean, itâs really hard sometimes. Of course it is. But its worth it for them. The people.âÂ

âThey need me.â She pauses and the familiar sense of being undeserving of helping anyone begins to set in. âWell, maybe not me. But they need someone. And if youâre in a position to do good, you should, right?â Itâs a borrowed phrase from Luna, the young benefactress thatâs paid for the estate and stipends since they created the Mutant Home two years ago. Itâs how she knew to trust Luna, something sheâs never been good at.
âSame here. I donât have much of a life outside of work.â

He smiled again, but this time it didnât quite reach his eyes. Â âIt really isnât a problem. Â Iâm just glad I could help.â
âWell what kind of surgery did they have? I could help you out a bit.â
âAnd what do you do when you arenât normally roaming the halls of a hospital?â Â Even though Declan was a bit suspicious of why she was at the hospital, there was a part of him that was intrigued and really did want to know more.
âBack surgery. Theyâre really old.â Haven responds quickly, hoping he wonât ask more about her friend.

âOh it wonât be a problem. Â Iâm happy to help.â Â Declan gave her an honest smile, thinking he was overreacting to things. Â It certainly wouldnât be the first time.
But then she started marking things off about him. Â It all just seemed a bit too weird to him. Â So he covered his face for a little bit, making it seem like he was just rubbing it after a long day at work.
âActually today hasnât been too bad. Â Mostly just rounds today. Â But I thought I needed the fresh air.â Â He narrowed his eyes slightly, looking her up and down and trying to get a read of her. Â âSomething tells me youâre a lot smarter than youâre giving yourself credit for.â
âSo is your friend on this floor? Or are you turned around on that too?â
âYouâre very kind, thank you.â She smiled back, and listened to him answer her question, trying to learn his voice. âI can understand that. I hope Iâm not taking up all of your break time, Dr. Adams.â
âYes, Iâm pretty sure this is the floor. But I wouldnât be surprised if Iâm wrong about that too....â
Keep your eyes out for a map......In case he asks more.

Declan furrowed his eyebrows together when she started fumbling in her thoughts. Â It wasnât how most people reacted when he spoke to them.
âAdams, Dr. Adams.â Â He felt something was off but he couldnât quite pinpoint it. Â âOh well itâs on the first floor right by the entrance. Â I can walk you down there if youâd like, Â I was just stretching my legs and I wouldnât want you to get lost again.â
âOnly if youâre sure it wouldnât be any trouble, Dr. Adams.â Haven answers the handsome doctor more confidently than she ever could if she was in her own skin, not acting.Â
Adams.Â
Might be useful.Â
Light blue eyes. African American... mixed, maybe. Some facial hair.Â
Pretty boy. Too pretty.
Voice.... youâve got to get the voice down. Ask him something.
âSo is it a slow day? I canât imagine someone like you usually has the time or interest to go around helping forgetful dummies like me. Or are people usually too smart to get this lost?â She asks, offering him a pretty smile.
Ugh. Youâve gotten rusty, soldier.Â
Sweep your hair to the side. Â Smile. Look helpless.
Doctors and their messiah complexes... usually pretty easy, right? Youâve got this, soldier.

It was almost the end of Declanâs shift, he knew he was getting tired because everyone was getting louder to him. Â At his peak, he could keep out the thoughts around him. Â Not mute it completely, but turn down the volume so he can have room for his own thoughts. Â But when heâs tired it was always more difficult to keep it up.
He was planning what he was going to do when he got home. Â Feed Bruce, his sole companion which was a fish. Â Make a light dinner. Â Watch T.V. Â Declan was liked the mundane, the more he could fit in, the better.
He heard a snip-it of the thoughts of the girl that was approaching him, she was louder than everyone else but he chalked it up to being exhausted. Â He tried not to react to the ones about him being good looking, but the rest of her thoughts werenât the normal thoughts he heard in the hospital, so he decided to speak up. Â Â âExcuse me maâam, do you need some help?â
Sheâs all too aware of Hot Doctor turning to her and offering his help. It makes her nervous, and she canât decide if itâs being noticed or if itâs being noticed by Hot Doctor thatâs freaking her out.
Dammit, get a grip.
Shitshitshitshitshit heâs looking at me.
Look at the name tag, quick.
Sick friend! Sick friend!
âYeah, sorry, Dr- . I just got a little lost. Mind telling me how to get to the gift shop? I forgot to buy flowers on my way up.â She offers up a slow, confident grin.

Itâs easy now, to pull a new identity over herself as easily as a sweater. And just like one might wear a lucky shirt, the face sheâs chosen to wear today is one of her favorites, taken from a backup dancer in some otherwise long forgotten mid 2000s music video. Itâs more than just another mask, itâs slipping into a character... easy as one, two, three.
It doesnât hurt that sheâs beautiful today. Itâs always easier to feel confident when she looks like this and as much as sheâd never admit it to Kennedy, deceiving people about her true identity always makes her nervous.Â
Today is relatively easy as far as covert operations go, though she knows it wonât always be like this. Her brotherâs crusade is gaining traction and as much as sheâd love to remain at the mansion with the children forever, she knows her gift is too valuable not to put to use. For now, sheâs volunteered to investigate a local hospital, take names and faces of anyone important. Itâs dangerous for mutants to find medical care these days, and if she can start to help by bringing in medicine that otherwise would be almost impossible for them to access, then itâs equally impossible for Haven to refuse to help.
So she walks through the hallways of the hospital, pretending to look for a room while her eyes dart back and forwards at name badges and faces.
Easy, youâre good....Ok, how about baldy there? Hm. Looks important- grab the name- wait.. Shit... Why do they all walk so fast? Ok... that oneâs handsome. A little too pretty to be a doctor, but I wouldnât mind trying him on for size... wait... I mean... Ok, shut up, Haven. Smile.
