I love how inherently selfish both Glinda AND Elphaba are as protagonists. But where one gets praised and admired for it, the other gets demonised and hated.
People always attack Glindaâs decision not to runaway with Elphaba, but no one acknowledges how overtly selfish it is to ask that of someone.
Elphaba is asking Glinda to throw her ENTIRE life away for her. To be ostracised and hated all throughout Oz when she knows full well how badly Glinda cares about what people think of her.
And while Elphaba is used to such ostracisation, Glinda is not.
It is an equally selfish decision to refuse Elphaba request. To perpetuate corrupt beliefs you donât believe; in order to be accepted and validated by people in power.
Theyâre BOTH in the wrong, for entirely different reasons. It was an impossible situation with no right answer. And Iâm sick of people acting like Glinda made the â wrong choice â
Itâs interesting that so many Wicked fans consider Glinda a protagonist when the story of Wicked (it seems to me) is only really interested in how ELPHABA affects the world around her. The point of the story is asking what makes a villain, right? And Wizard of Oz casts her exclusively as bad, Glinda unequivocally with good.
Wicked the book introduces a complex moral scenario to ask why the world of Oz considers this to be so with Elphaba at its centre and Glinda as an interesting foil to this character. Functionally, canon Glinda doesnât work as a protagonist - youâre not being asked to see the world through her eyes. Yes, it would like you to interrogate your assumptions about her but thatâs not the same thing.
I agree that these two characters are interestingly morally grey but Glinda IS siding WITH a morally reprehensible government power and Elphaba is trying to fight that power.
As you say, Elphaba is a much more suitable candidate for rebellion and Glinda would be terrible at it buuut I donât think you can weigh what theyâre asking each other equally. The story is asking you to consider what happens to someone defying the powers that be NOT what happens to someone who goes along with it.
