[Dom] "Can we just... not go to the party tonight? Just stay in, the two of us?"

Marissa paused midway through putting an earring in and glanced over her shoulder toward her boyfriend. “You bring that up now?” she asked in disbelief, pausing for effect. “After I do my makeup and pick out an outfit?” Not that she particularly wanted to go to thing either- crawling into bed with Dom and putting on a movie was so much more tempting. Pulling the earring back out and tossing it into her jewelry box, she collapsed onto the bed- well, half on the bed, half on Dom- not taking specific care to keep her clothing unwrinkled for once. “I’m leaving it on you to come up with an excuse for them tomorrow.”

“It won’t get infected, I promise.” He endeavoured to give her a smile. “I mean, it’s unlikely. Because of my mutation. But I can be extra careful too, if that’ll put your mind at ease.” His eyes went from her face to the deep cut across his palm, noting how the edges of the gash had already begun to harden over. The corners of his lips twitched upward as he pointed to it. “See? It’s already healing, in fact I could probably try shifting but I think the cut remains. I’m not sure. I’ve never tried.” He actually considered doing so, and tilted his hand to get a better look at his injury before glancing up. “…Marissa…” A breath left him, but instead of harping on, he attempted to shift to another subject. “How’s Dominic? Is it true he bit out someone’s throat?”

“Unlikely. Ah, how relieving.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm that she wasn’t entirely aware that she had until now; however, she managed to toss the bandages back onto the bed as per request. Marissa eyed the cut, noting how the edges of it were already beginning to heal. Sure, it would probably be smoothed over by morning, but that didn’t make her feel any better about leaving it untreated. “I- “ If Cash was trying to distract her from the task at hand, he was nothing less than successful. It definitely showed in the way her shoulders tensed, the way her eyes trained slightly more to the right, avoiding eye contact. “He’s fine,” she finally got out, “Just talked to him like half an hour ago. Minor injuries, nothing too serious.” She completely ignored the second question, opting instead to absentmindedly chip at her nail polish. If she ignored an issue, it would eventually become less of an issue, right? “He, however, let me bandage him up.”

Cash couldn’t stop fidgeting. He bobbed his knees up and down atop the infirmary bed he sat on the edge of, legs dangling. A group had just returned from a recent mission, himself included, but he appeared to be the only one suffering minor injuries. It left him restless knowing that Marissa could be tending to someone who needed more help than Cash did. “It’s honestly fine. They’re just a couple cuts, and– I told the nurse that I heal faster than most.” He placed a hand to the side of his face, tiredly rubbing at an eye, then cheek. “You’d be wasting bandages… I don’t need them.”

Marissa rolled her eyes at his response, finally retrieving a new roll of bandages and nudging the drawer shut behind her. “Cash, if I don’t clean and bandage it up now, it’ll get infected.” Arranging the supplies on the bed next to Cash, she pulled up a chair and sat across from him. A hand was placed to his knee in hopes of getting it to stop shaking- all of the fidgeting was making her even more nervous. “Besides, I’m really not qualified to deal with anything much worse than this. The nurses assured me that they have everyone else handled, they’ll be fine.” Raising a perfect brow only slightly, she lifted her hand back up to wave the roll of bandages around a bit. “Please?”

When Marissa had signed up to volunteer at the infirmary, she thought she’d be doing some organization and record keeping, maybe a few jobs assisting the nurses, but as soon as all of the facility patients got rushed in, the infirmary staff had her back and forth between rooms constantly. Currently, she was stuck bandaging up small cuts and other assorted wounds while the actual nurses took care of the more severe patients. “Can you sit still for me?” she patiently asked the person sitting on the bed as she frantically dug around in a drawer for more bandages.

He grinned as she leaned down to kiss his forehead, heaving her up so she was more comfortable and secure against his back, and beginning to slow down slightly so he could adopt a more normal gait as they rounded the corner, growing closer to Marissa’s door.  

“Well, that’s  certainly a new idea.  I’ll mull it over,” he murmured softly, happy that Marissa seemed to be growing looser the closer they got to her door.  When he finally reached it, he leaned down, bringing Marissa eye level with the door so she could open it.  “If you please, Madam, could you do the honors?” he said, adopting an awful fake British accent.

She rolled her eyes at the horrible accent, testing the handle before fishing her key from her pocket and unlocking the door. It was rare that the door was ever locked, as was the case with most of the rooms here, but every once in a while her or her roommate would feel a bit nostalgic and lock the door for old time’s sake, just to feel slightly more normal. Pushing the door open, she leaned back once more, and pointed a finger toward the open doorway. “Onward!”

He grinned, feeling her settling into him, as she always did.  They’d gone from being such a ridiculous couple, Dom constantly seeking out the danger, shooting after the adrenaline in hopes to catch his girlfriend in surprise, but now he just wanted to make her smile in any way he could.  She’d grown used to it as well, barely even blinking an eye now when he carried her up.  It surprised him how much the two had grown… almost into each other, but it was true.  He couldn’t imagine a life without her by this point.  

“Ok, ready… GO!” he echoed out into the empty mess hall before speed walking down the way, moving in absurdly exaggerated strides as he walked as fast as he could.  “I’m thinking of using this is one of my signature moves, what do you think?” he asked up to Marissa, knowing full well that it was the last thing he would ever do on a mission.

Marissa failed at stifling the soft laughter that racked through her body, keeping in mind that he would do just about anything to cheer her up at this point. An overwhelming feeling of fondness comes over her, causing her to lean down and press brief kiss against his temple. “I think that’s absolutely ridiculous, but you might just cute all your enemies to death with it, so it’s worth a shot.” Her fingers take the liberty of playing with Dom’s shirt collar as she watches the multitude of identical doors pass by, muscles becoming less and less tense with each one.

Dom followed Marissa quickly, silently pacing behind her to put his scraped-clean plate away.  As soon as he’d placed it in the rack, offering up a silent nod of recognition to the woman cleaning off the plates, he turned back to his girlfriend, quickly noting the look of panicked despondency on her face.  He hated seeing her like this, though it pained him to admit that it was a face he was beginning to get used to, despite all his best efforts.  He nodded again quickly in understanding, before grabbing her to him and pushing a small kiss atop her curly dark head.  

“I’ll get you back in before you can count to three, you know me,” he hummed down into her ear, before quickly lifting her up and launching her onto his broad back.  He wasn’t good at all that much, especially not the emotional stuff recently, but if there was anything he could offer up, it was his body - in any way necessary.  Holding her close to him so that she was nestled safely upon his back, he grinned.  “Ready?”

Despite her current overwhelming mood, Marissa couldn’t help but smile slightly to herself as she was pulled into her boyfriend, knowing that he’d understood even with the lack of words- of course he had, she’d picked up on the fact that he could read her without trouble fairly long ago. A surprised noise left her as she was thrown upon his back, but she recovered quickly, taking no time before she wrapped both her arms and legs securely around him. “Ready,” she confirmed softly, resting her chin against the top of his head, simply enjoying the feeling of such safety after the day she’d had. It was undeniably a comforting feeling, slowly but surely dragging her out of her emotionless state.

He felt a small loss pass through him as her hand left his, only to feel it thread through his fingers even more thoroughly.  His smile grew more pronounced across his face, even if it was weak compared to his old one of a few months ago.  

At her words, his smile left his face for a few seconds, almost in surprise.  The answer seemed incredibly obvious to him.  But then he nodded, warmth coming back into his face.  “Do you even have to ask that at this point?” he asked.  He squeezed her hand tightly.  “Always.”  His nose wrinkled at the comment.  “God I sound like Snape, so cheesy.”  He chuckled softly, before bending his face into his plate, shovelling the last bite down his throat, before dropping his fork in distaste.  He couldn’t blame Marissa for not wanting to eat this crap.  He could understand it, but he was worried by how blank her face looked.  

“You done?”

Marissa felt the edges of her lips lift up slightly at his answer, having predicted so before, but still needing the reassurance. They’d all but moved into each other’s rooms at this point, their roommates all too aware that separating them once they finally got to spend time together was impossible. She briefly considered attempting to eat more, but quickly dismissed the idea, setting her fork back on the table. 

She hummed her affirmation, quick to stand up and put her unfinished plate away, despite her lack of energy. Not that it was anything out of the ordinary- she constantly felt the need to retreat back to her room at any given moment, as most of the underground bunker was so poorly lit and monochrome. Everything about it reminded her of how different everything was, and definitely not for the better. At least in her own space she had attempted to make it as bright and uplifting as possible, spreading boredom-induced doodles across the walls. Though admittedly those had stopped being tacked up a while ago. She turned back toward Dom, her desperate expression reading something like ‘please get me out of here’.

He could tell she was feeling sick… probably from her mission.  He knew what that felt like.  He hadn’t been able to eat for almost two days after his first mission… though that had been for… other reasons.  Still, it was getting harder and harder to eat and to justify their own survival as each and every day passed.  He knew he was good at the missions, he knew he was helping countless people to survive, but he had to admit it was similarly accompanied with a sense of self-loathing that was pretty damn hard to get rid of.  

He smiled a bit when she took a bite, the hand cupping hers tightening a bit reassuringly.  “I’m pretty good at holding back hair, and yours is my personal favorite to hold back, so I’ll take to the job happily if I have to.”  He watched her as she finished chewing the bite with a small grin.  

But the grin slipped from his face a little as he watched just how tired she looked.  “Finish as much as you can then let’s get you to bed, ok?”  He wouldn’t ask about the mission.  He knew she wouldn’t want to talk about it, just like he couldn’t talk about his own.  But he’d be there with her until the very end.

Something resembling some sort of laugh escaped at his words, though it did little to alter her blank expression in any way. She untwisted her hand from Dom’s only to reach forward again and thread her fingers through his. She felt so selfish, believing that she was so lucky to have him right now, that he was her anchor, to let her problems outweigh his own for even a second. So much had gone down- some events that they wore on their sleeves and others that they refused to acknowledge at all- but somehow through all of it, they managed to still stay them. That was a miracle all on its own.

With her free hand, she picked up her own fork, managing to get down another small bite, if only for his sake. The faster she got this over with, the faster she could move on to sleeping and opt to either forget about everything she’d seen that day or dismiss it as some sort of nightmare. She nodded in compliance to his suggestion, letting the side of her foot tap his lightly under the table. “Promise you’ll stay with me?”

Dom looked up, surprised by his girlfriend’s sudden lack of appetite.  He hadn’t even noticed, to be honest, with all the missions he’d been given of late and the other… grief… he’d been dealing with, but the hollows in Marissa’s cheeks were far more defined than he’d ever seen them.  Dark circles were printed below her eyes, and she looked… tired.  Though, with a small sigh, he had to admit that pretty much everyone he’d seen recently had similar signs of deterioration.  Dom looked down at his own, half-eaten food, which he had been digesting robotically, barely even tasting, before he scrunched up his nose.  Reaching his hand out and taking hers in his with a light, comforting grasp, Dom perked his head at her.  

“Just a couple bites, just for strength…” he said softly, putting his fork into her plate and picking out the things she would normally like the most, before lifting it up and gesturing questioningly at her, fork in hand.  “Please?  For me?”

Marissa didn’t want to worry him, she really didn’t, but she honestly didn’t think she’d be able to keep anything down and with all the rationing that had been taking place lately, the last thing she wanted was to waste food, hence offering it to someone who could definitely use the energy. She’d heard Dom’s name called over the intercom far too many times to count and every time made her feel queasy, even though she knew in the back of her mind that he could hold his own and probably keep everyone else afloat too. That didn’t mean she was okay with it. 

She stared blankly at the fork held in front of her, excuses balancing on the tip of her tongue, though they never made their way out. For him was always a convincing argument, no matter the situation. Hesitantly, she took the bite, sending her boyfriend a pointed look. “...If I can’t keep it down, just know that it’s your fault and you will be holding my hair back.”

Lia took a break from the sandcastle, well, it couldn’t exactly be called a castle as of yet. A better word to use would be something like lump. A very tall lump. She gave the other brunette a warm smile, “Thanks: sand castle buildin’ makes you thirstier than you’d think.” Lia uncapped a bottle before grinning, following Marissa’s gaze back over to her castle – her lump. “It’s, um, a work in process. Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Lia took a sip from the bottle, “But if I were in a competition for tallest pile of sand, mine’d be a shoe in.”

“No problem.” Marissa leaned back, the heals of her hands digging into the sand. Sure, the pile of sand wasn’t exactly elegantly carved, but it was big- there was still potential. “You could always call it a hill and argue that the castle is underground?” She offered lightheartedly. “You’d be surprised how easily people get hooked on a background story, might win you some creativity points.”

The minute the school bus doors opened, everyone scattered to chase each other into the water or find a nice spot to tan but mainly to get out of a teacher’s view. Though the teachers seemed to be more interested in reading their assorted books or magazines and not providing any adult supervision which, naturally, made for an awesome beach day. Lia had found herself a nice spot by the water and instead of focusing on her tan, she decided to to sit down and attempt at a sandcastle. With her sunglasses perched on the bridge of her nose, threatening to slide off, she was intensely focused on crafting her castle, barely even noticing a person’s shadow hovering over her. “Hey.” she said absentmindedly without even bothering to glance up.

Marissa had originally planned to attempt at a tan (though she was sure her eternally pale skin was some sort of secondary trait to her mutation) but higher up into the beach was crowded and loud, not that she minded the amount of people but there were definitely better uses of her time. Spotting Lia closer down to the water, she took a detour toward the cooler before making her way over. “Hey,” she responded, “I brought iced tea.” Settling in next to the other girl, she rested the two bottles upright in the sand between them, taking a moment to glance over the sandcastle. “Those are some... interesting forms,” she commented, placing a finger to her chin and feigning her best art critic impression.

Dagny’s shoulders jostled gently at Marissa’s words, her expression softer than it’d been before they’d started talking. “It is all Dagny has ever known. We – learn to adjust. To move on.” She said, before silence again surfaced between them. Her feet shifted against the floor as she waited for the other girl to speak. It was during times like these that Dagny wished she still had her sight. It was difficult to understand another’s feelings when they remained silent, and used only their face to convey how they felt. In fact, it left her a little uncomfortable, and she adjusted her limbs. Marissa’s voice made her pause. “We do not dwell on the dead. It is death for reason.” Her words were stiff, as if she was unsure on how to explain it. “Death only part of fate, for everyone.” Dagny reached out to feel for Marissa’s hand, and upon finding it, she picked it up and turned it over, tapping the girl’s palm. “Remove hands from eyes. Life not valuable, life just – another thing. And fragile.” She tilted her head slightly to the side, brows lifting somewhat. “Is not naive.” She said, perhaps a little too quickly. “Marissa makes choices, and says no to demands of Death.” A breath left her, one of which carried a small laugh. “Maybe Marissa should be feared, ha?”

Marissa rested her head against her hands as she listened to Dagny speak. That was at least one good thing about having a conversation with someone who couldn’t see you- there was no reason to look them in the eye. The blondes words were some she already knew, though it felt comforting to hear them spoken out loud. She glanced up in surprise as Dagny’s hand found her own. Something about the way she spoke sounded wise, carved from a lifetime’s worth of experience, and Marissa found herself wanting so badly to believe her. “Feared?” The thought brought an amused smile to her face. “I’m not sure anyone would ever fear me, but it’s a nice thought. I’ll take it as a compliment.”
