“I think that one might be mine, actually.”

“What?” Sybill’s eyes widened, her lips now frozen to the edge of the cup she had immediately taken a drink from. She reckoned if she moved, it would somehow be worse that she was drinking what didn’t belong to her. “Is this not-” her eyes wandered downward, and upon inspection, the color of the liquid was certainly not that of the lavender tea she ordered. Finally, she pulled the cup away from her lips, extending it towards the other, “Oh. That’s- Here. Sorry.”

The breeze had made her run a little more difficult, but she didn’t mind the challenge. If anything, it was a nice reminder of home and how her Ada would always say ‘an east wind is coming; it’ll be cold and bitter’. Ris can remember reading the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes each night with her dads and brothers. Whenever those particular words were uttered, she was always quick to follow up with the latter half of the quote, ‘a cleaner, better, stronger land will lie in the sunshine when the storm has cleared’. So a little wind could hardly get her down.
Smiling, Ris nodded at the other girl, “Yes, a little breeze is nice, though I suppose it’s starting to get a bit crisp. I reckon it’ll be colder soon,” she answered. The bluntness of the comment made her laugh a bit, as she weighed her answer, “I mean, I don’t think so, but then again I can’t be sure. There’s not usually many people up before I go to breakfast,” she admitted, “But I’m sorry if I startled you.”
...
“That’s why fall is my least favorite season.” Sybill offered, as if she had been asked her opinion on the seasons. “It’s crisp, but it’s not cold. It doesn’t know what it wants.” At least winter knew to be cold, summer knew to be hot, and spring knew to be... wet. Fall was just odd.
Syb shook her head quickly, pulling her jacket closed just a bit tighter, “Oh, please, don’t apologize. You’ve every right to shout in the courtyard!” she paused, “Are you on your way to get breakfast now?” Normally she wouldn’t be so bold as to outright ask to join in on others’ plans, but it was the start of a new year at a new school, that would allow a little boldness. Plus, there were no inklings of ill will - the girl had a good energy about her.

Despite it being Saturday, Ris was always an early riser. She usually forced herself to stay in bed at least a little bit longer on Sunday’s, but otherwise she got up when her body was ready to. Maybe it was because she was never good at staying idle, or maybe it was because she didn’t want to miss anything due to sleep, but Ris was always up around the time the sun was. Saturday mornings were her favorite though. Most people took the weekend to sleep in a little longer, and because of that the grounds were blissfully quiet while the sun was slowly starting to peak up. It was the perfect time to go for a run, at least in her opinion, which was why Saturday morning was always spent doing a double loop around the grounds. If she timed it right, and more often than not she did, Ris finished up right before the start of breakfast.
Today was no different, and as she finished the last of her loop, she threw her arms up over her head as she slowed down to a brisk walk. Walking up from the Black Lake, she was looking forward to getting to breakfast early. As she neared the castle, she did a double take at seeing another person headed in the same direction. It wasn’t that Ris never saw people in the morning, it just was less common on a weekend. Without second thought, she greeted loud enough to catch the other person’s attention, “A nice morning to be on the grounds, yeah?”
...
To say that Sybill jumped out of her own skin at the sound of someone else’s voice would barely be an exaggeration. In her defense, her head was still spinning from the first week of classes, and she was very focused on the way the breeze was moving. East to west, she figured, although she had absolutely no clue what that meant in the grand scale of things. Just good to know.
“Yeah- Yes, very nice. The weather’s... You know. Good! Breezy.” It wasn’t her fault full sentences were hard this early in the morning. “Is yelling before breakfast a customary thing for you?” Syb didn’t mean it harshly, though it very well may have come off as such - she just wanted to be prepared for any future morning startles.
