"Y - Yeah," he stammered. "You too." Dawn - or Hikari, rather, took his handed and Tate swallowed hard. Had it always been like this? he wondered idly. Had feelings always been buried so deep, waiting to spring forth from something so simple a gesture as a handshake. He gave Hikari’s soft hands a gentle squeeze.
Nah, he decided. It was just the rush of meeting someone again after so many years. He did vaguely recall the sort of lost feeling he got from her when they first met, but that she was better than before was, well, better.
"Years of practice," he laughed, before directly answering her question. "I still run the gym, actually," he offered. "My sister has since moved on to new heights, but I dunno," he shrugged, "I just haven’t been able to put the gym to rest." It was still double battles, and Tate had trained a Lunatone, for the sole purpose of keeping their old Solrock/Lunatone duo running.
He bit his tongue, not wanting to allow the flood of words that weighed so heavily to flow out. Rambling was the last thing he wanted to do.
〓 ᵍᵃᵐᵉ ᵒᵛᵉʳ! 〓
“Ten years can make a huge difference, huh?”
It was almost unbelievable that ten years had passed, but it was for the better. Her life was still a mess, but it had improved a bit. Somehow she was holding up by herself, perhaps she learned to adapt from her Galactic days. Ah, that was something that Tate still had to know about. Hikari would consider telling him, though there was a huge chance she wouldn't. Well, if she found the right moment...
Hikari recalled that she was quite taken by Tate, for an unknown reason. He was one of the few-- No, maybe the only person she actually wanted to talk to. A strange day it was for her, attempting to be nice was so not like her back then. The good thing was that Hikari was no longer her.
“Oh? How interesting.” This time she actually smiled, it wasn't as hard as she thought! “If you love it, why quit?” She said, as if it were that simple. By now she should have known, nothing is ever simple.
“Are you busy? I would like to go for a walk.”
Tate had to admit, that the company called itself Galactic was pretty spectacular. Though, something about it sent a bell off in his mind. Had there been something on the news about it?
Nah. Instead, he opted to shrug his gut feeling off. Sinnoh’s current events weren’t normal to him. He didn’t actively follow them unless Lucian of the Elite Four was involved. “That’s pretty cool,” he commented. “Do you have a mantra like ‘searching the universe for a family friendly energy source’ or something cheesy like that?” Though he was grinning when he asked it, Tate wasn’t oblivious to the idea that she was unnerved by something.
He mumbled “Nevermind,” as she said enough and asked what he did. “When I’m not helping my parents in the Space Station, I’m a Gym Leader,” he divulged uncertainly. Hopefully, she wouldn’t think less of him for it - or worse - more. Tate wanted nothing more than to know that people liked him for more than his status, and typically didn’t indulge people in knowledge of his abilities and status. Gym Leaders were like Nobility, it often seemed, but really, he was just another trainer working to bring out the best of himself and his Pokemon.
He gave an uncertain laugh and glanced sideways at her. Would her opinion shift suddenly, he wondered, for better or for worse?
███ʀᴇɴᴇɢᴀᴅᴇ▌;
Dawn should have pushed him away from the start, like she did with others. Nothing good came from rebelling, but she still did it, she rebelled her own rules. Feeling almost guilty for shushing the other, she would have to make an excuse-- Ah, for just these moments the traitor was human again.
❝Nothing like that.❞ She said, letting loose of her facade, just a bit. Taking a deep breath, she was ready. ❝We Dream of the Universe!❞ That was so lame, she hoped he didn't think badly of it. This time she didn't feel bad, it wasn't a lie, Team Galactic dreamed of a new universe. No, something else made her feel bad this time around...
❝Space Station? How interesting, I have an interest in such things.❞ What he said next made her pause. The person she wanted to be nice to had to be a Gym Leader. Though he obviously wasn't from Sinnoh, that was good. All the more easier to lie and talk to him. ❝Really? What type do you specialize in?❞
As a child, she remembered admiring Gym Leaders, masters of a certain type. During her journey, she was so happy to meet all of them. With every battle, she poured her soul into them, wanting to make a good impression. When she finally made it to the league, she felt that challenging the Champion was an honor.
If they could see her now...
futxresights:
Turning slowly, Tate gazed at the woman. There was only one person who would ever refer to him as “Walking Buddy” and he had long since put her to rest in his mind. But there she was. And though he was far from the tongue-tied eighteen-year-old he had been then, Tate was still flabbergasted that she had even recognized him.
Of course, he had hoped, and maybe dreamed a little, like any young man would do when a young lady like Dawn - Hikari? - gave him the time time of day. Surprisingly, the smile came easily to his face as he extended his hand in greeting.
"It’s great to see you," he greeted. "But, you can call me Tate," he added with a wink. He still worked as a Gym Leader, though Liza had moved on, soaring for new heights while her twin brother was more than cozy with the space-themed gym. "How have you been?" His words were tentative, afraid that they would prove her to be no more than an apparition.
◤⊹◢
“You have certainly grown, Tate.” Hikari attempted a smile, but it was more like a half-smile. It really didn't matter to her, showing her emotions was hard and took too much effort. Lazily, she shook his hand and returned the wink.
“Eh, I'm probably way better than from when we first met.” She said, shrugging a bit. What she said probably made no sense, but it was mostly true. Really, it was funny how she was way more successful as a child and as an adult, a complete nobody. Hikari wasn't mad about it, rather she enjoyed it a lot. It was as if she were finally free from it all, at last...
“And yourself? Seriously, I don't remember you being this way.” Letting out a small laugh, she considered taking him out for a drink. They weren't close or anything, Hikari just wanted to actually get to know him. This time was going to be different, no lies, no secrets, no holding back.
Drumming on like an endless song in his ears, Tate’s heart raced. It caught in his throat - and if it wasn’t his heart, it was something else. Embarrassment perhaps - yeah, that was likely it. After all, the fear that was striking him to his core had nothing to do with her.
Why did she come closer? Tate wondered, glancing sideways. She didn’t look too off-put by his mistake. He cursed his inability to be overly coherent around pretty girls; and Sinnoh for having oh so many of them. Hoenn girls were less enchanting and more competitive. Less…
The word failed to come to mind. Glamorous may have been it, but he wasn’t so sure. Taking a deep breath, Tate made an attempt to don his Gym Leader confidence. It was a war he had waged for years - if he could challenge trainers from all over the world, among them other Gym Leaders and Elites, surely he could talk to a girl without Liza being there. Admittedly, the latter was more like a battle than he cared to admit, but the differences were more pressing, because battles were sport. They weren’t…intimate.
"An important company?" He inquired. Hopefully, it wasn’t too nosy of an inquiry, after all, Sinnoh was home to lots of famous companies - one of which developed the Poketch, something Liza had been begging for for years. “That must be a fun job,” he added. “And if you’re able to go this far for breaks, then I might just have to sign up!” There was a jovial tone to the last bit, but a part of him was serious. He had wanted to leave Hoenn for a while, at least to see other regions. And Sinnoh was such a lovely region… The climate, however, was a bit cold for his tastes.
—✄ | Dawn figured it would be easier to talk to someone if she was physically closer. Wasn't that how these things worked or something? For some reason, she felt like she messed up on how that worked. Well, it didn't matter that much, the other seemed fine with it.
Oh, she would like to forget that she was even with Team Galactic, just for this moment. The other was interested in it, the Team's disguise, if one could even call it that at this point. Due to the events that happened, the ones that she was heavily involved in, the word broke out. Though it was uncommon for people to talk about it these days, their 'hero' had taken care of it, so why bother? Imbeciles.
❝I work for the Galactic Veilstone Building, we search for new sources of energy.❞ Dawn said, and glanced over at him. ❝What a shame, we are not hiring.❞ Recruiting some stranger wasn't a bad thing, but he seemed normal. There was no way she would let him find out or join. Honestly, it would be better if he was joking.
Getting a little worked up by something that was probably a joke was idiotic, Dawn knew that. Actually attempting to be friendly was a mistake, another thing she knew. Even if it was for one moment, the traitor wanted to feel human. What an idiot she was for doing this, for trying.
❝Enough of that. What do you do for a living?❞ |
*
—✄ | Dawn was still, unsure if she should even say anything to her boss. The heart she forgot she had was pound, and despite how cold it was, she was sweating. This wasn’t suppose to happen to her, not even close. Why was this happening to her? Where did she go wrong in life? Did he still think that he was unfaithful to his team, his cause— to him? She was was trying so hard, she truly was… Dawn wanted to break.
❝Master… Did I do something wrong?❞ She spoke as calmly as she could, but oh how hard it was. ❝Master Cyrus, I do not understand. Why are you point that gun at me? Did I mess up somehow?❞ |
*
—✄ | Even though a gun was pointed right at her head, the traitor stayed motionless. Years of not showing emotion sure came in handy, but her heart was pounding, solid proof that she was still alive. The champion still hadn’t killed her, but Dawn was a little more concerned as to why. Just what was her intention?
❝Miss Champion… I must ask why. Perhaps you know the truth?❞ |
oh hell yeah these are gonna be good
