no, royalties are not a significant source of income for most authors. if you wrote something like Project Hail Mary, then absolutely, the royalties would be substantial! but that's like winning the lottery. Ryan Gosling is not starring in the movie adaption of most books.
when you sell a book to a publisher, you get what's called 'an advance against royalties'. it's usually split into multiple parts, so you might get one third for the initial sale, one third for the final revised manuscript, and one third on the publishing date.
an advance against royalties is the publisher saying "we believe you will eventually make X amount in royalties, so here it is ahead of time." and then you don't actually see any money from royalties until the advance is paid off. most books do not make enough in royalties to pay off the advance (I have two children's books and one fiction book, and have yet to see royalties for any of them).
advances are still great, but you need to make them stretch! for instance, last year my net income was about 30k Canadian (21k USD), which is fantastic when you consider that I mostly made it through writing. but I'm definitely not a millionaire. I can live off my writing (not trying to undersell that!) but I'll probably remain in a low income bracket for the foreseeable future.
this isn't meant to discourage anyone from seeking out writing as a career! however, there is a reason that many authors have alternate jobs with writing on the side. or, you know, rich spouses.
this isn't me making a fuss about pirating (I've pirated way too many shows to run my mouth on that lmao), but there IS actually a financial incentive to having people buy your books!
buying books shows the publisher that they can make money off you, which means they're more likely to give you advances for future books. and advances are what authors live off (if they don't have a side job). that's why I always push pre-orders so hard! you have to be a racehorse worth betting on, or else they send you to the glue factory....
if I can offer one alternative to pirating: asking your library to stock the book also helps authors, and doesn't cost anything. the only downside is the patience required.
OOPS yes, @stjohnstarling makes a good point! everything I'm saying is from the perspective of traditional publishing, but it's a very different game if you're a self-published author

related to my previous post: this is my POV on the eternal "it is/n't that deep" debate always going on with everything, as someone who now just goes "cool okay whatever" and leaves when something disappoints me instead of wasting time raging about what went wrong or waiting around for it to get better. i think it's good to have all those crazy what-if thought experiments, but i also think you need to make sure you're not setting yourself up for heartache! be nice to yourself and be nice to other people (as the moral so often is...)

It's always hard reading about the violence committed to steal America, but the buffalo is always like... That's some inhuman shit. Everyone is burning in hell for that one. Wdym there were thirty to sixty MILLION buffalo in 1800, and by 1900 there were only 300 left. THREE HUNDRED. Do you know, can you fathom the amount of purposeful cruelty required to kill NINETY NINE PERCENT of a population of an animal, just to spite and murder the living Native people who existed and thrived with them? I had the pleasure of visiting a bison breeding site recently. There is a natural herd that lives on a Nature Conservancy-owned plot of land which has been restored to native prairie and they are maintaining a herd which is also the source of new herds in other places.
People do terrible things but other people do great things. Never give up hope. There are baby bison frolicking in Illinois today.

The Oakland Zoo's bison program is in collaboration with the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. This baby was released with others from the Oakland Zoo herd as part of returning bison to the plains of Montana.
We can't erase what colonists and settlers did, but we can work to fix the damage, and many, many people and organizations are working to save the bison and re-wild them, led by the indigenous peoples of the US and Canada who have been their stewards for so long.
I encourage everyone to find out what programs and systems they can support in their local areas and communities-- it can be as fun as purchasing a zoo or museum membership if those orgs do this kind of work.
And pay your damn land tax.

Deadly egg recall
The FDA has upgraded an egg recall issued last month to “Class I,” its highest risk level, as it warns the public that consuming the products could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The recall of 1,589,577 dozen white-shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs was initially issued by Midwest Poultry Services in late July, which warned they might be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis.
According to the company, the eggs were produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6 and July 3 and have sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and August 17. The recalled egg cartons have either the code P-1950 or 0840962 and Julian Dates between 157-184.

Recalled eggs were available to consumers at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana; Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and other smaller retail and foodservice outlets in these states plus Mississippi and New Mexico.

Legit the grass has been scorched all the way down to bare soil here, and there's dust hanging in the air. I moved from an arid part of the US, and it's starting to look like a desert here, it's fucked, send help.
The UK is not supposed to be arid.
Grass going brown in the summer isn't something I ever saw in the UK until I was in my 30s, and before that I had the kind of jobs that often meant working in parks and road verges, so it's not like I was just not paying attention beforehand.
Now it ain't even brown, it's just disappearing entirely; where I am, it's just bare dirt, and what remains is covered in dust.

This has made me realised what summer smell is missing now: The smell of fresh cut grass. That and creosote (on the fences) used to be an omnipresent summer smell in the August holidays because someone would always be cutting their lawn, whereas now if you're going to mow at all, you stop by the end of June because the grass is all too crispy to take it healthily.
