I’ve been listening to a lot of Susumu Hirasawa lately, and I’m just so upset I have been so oblivious to his work. He does quite a bit of some of the renown anime series/movies background music, or intro opening. His work is actually all around me.
He was also inspired by genres like punk rock, surf, electronic, and many more that he produces such a beautiful and different kind of sound. I find it difficult to explain myself. I’m in love with it though; he is a phenomenal orchestrator and singer.
“I dislike it when I hear someone describe [my music] as weird rock, or weird techno. Surely this genre is hard to define in the music scene, because it doesn’t meet the standard of Western music charts. Hence if a rock music critic attempts to judge me [and my music], all they come up with is ambient music, or music to take drugs to. [The Japanese music scene] doesn’t help with introducing terms such as new-age or transpersonality. I want to let my music reach a broader part of society, being music born from Japanese culture, and I think this is why I want to connect to the world that doesn’t exist in the music scene”. -Susumu Hirasawa.
