Thought I’d share a fun #shelfie since I did a bit of reorganizing the other day #bookstagram
A beautiful day to pick up a good read at your local library ☀️📚#bookstagram #librarylove #savinghamlet
Libraries are the loml
There is nothing that makes me happier than when scrolling through bookstagram (follow me I’m weekend.all.booked) and seeing atheistically pleasing bookshelves. You know the ones I’m talking about pretty white floor to ceiling shelves with books organized by color or series that have little trinkets and pop vinyls all over them. Well while I love them more than life itself, I know as a broke high school senior, soon to be broke college student, that books are hella expensive, and the amount of books it takes to have those really pretty aesthetically pleasing shelves sometimes takes a lot of time and money. And so from the time I was young I have had a deep and passionate relationship with my local libraries.
This love affair began in the 5th grade. My elementary school did not have its own personal library so we would take monthly class trips to the local library. The idea was great in theory but poorly executed, like most school things come to think of it, because the average month has four weeks and the average library book loan period is three weeks, two if it’s a new book. Me living in a different town than I attended school made trips to the library to return books difficult and sometimes impractical causing me to wrack up sometimes hefty library fines. Not until the 5th grade did I start to really appreciate all that library had to offer me.
In the 5th grade I discovered some wonderful book series, I finally succeeded in reading the Harry Potter series and delved into the Percy Jackson books. It was this school year that I found my relatively fast paced reading pace, and at the rate I was reading these books it was completely impractical for my family to go out and buy more books every time I finished them, *cue the amazing local library.* I began to ask my mom if I could make almost biweekly trips to the library, and for a 5th grader, finishing a 300-400 page book in 2 weeks is pretty fast (of course now that might take me an afternoon, two days at most if I have a lot of school work). And thus began my love for libraries.
All through middle school I would frequent the library and often times peruse my English teacher’s personal library (she was my aunt so it was easy to do) looking for any good book I could get my hands on. In high school though I decided to go to school in my own town. I realized that summer that I never got a library card for the one in my town so my mom drove there and I got one, that summer I didn’t spend as much time there as I had wanted because I had some really cool camps and needed time to get things together for high school.
My school required that every year we complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service. Freshman year you have to work at one of the five organizations that the school suggests. I decided that I wanted to volunteer at the library. I volunteered two hours a week working closely with the youth services coordinator, I learned the Dewey Decimal System, and always had a leg up in knowing when we got new YA books. I ended up volunteering a lot more than the minimum and learned all the librarians by name. I continued to volunteer there well into my junior year of school, the librarians would ask me for book suggestions, one of them would actually let me review some of the books before they went on the shelf for checkout so others could get an idea if they would like them.
Now my trips to the library have been a bit more sparse as I am extremely busy in trying to finish my senior year (32 school days until graduation *yikes*). Still the librarians know me by name, ask me personally what I thought of the book I just returned, and I now am a little sad knowing that next year I won’t be able to frequent my library as much. I hope that next year in college that my library(s) over there will allow me to form the same kind of bond I have with my local ones.
So I encourage everyone to take a minute and visit a library, who knows you may become best friends with your librarian. Ask them questions, believe it or not, they're trained into helping you find books based off of ones you like, and who knows, maybe you’ll find a new book/author you end up loving. Libraries, I love you so much.
Things I’d like to see on Booklr
Reviews for backlist books. I don’t care if you’re reading something old for the first time. You just read Sabriel by Garth Nix? Or the Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta? Or maybe Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz? DO A REVIEW FOR IT! Maybe it’s not the newest and hottest book right now, but there are so many older novels to discover and reviews help that!
Buzz for non-YA novels. I love the Young Adult genre/age group. But there’s a TON of books that aren’t Young Adult that would be fun to discuss and share! Occasionally we get non-YA books that get popular because of their appeal to the YA audience (The Night Circus, Shades of Magic, Song of Achilles, etc) but I wanna hear about more! Tell me about the mystery you’re reading, the poetry book you picked up, the old sci-fi series you found on sale! There’s a lot of books out there! If YA isn’t your thing, no worries, I still want to see blogs and posts for books outside that area!
Support Reviews. I’m just as guilty of this. I don’t tend to reblog or like reviews, even though I constantly skim, read, and look at what bloggers have to say. Reviews are essential to book blogging in general and great for the book industry! We should reblog and comment on them more! Show reviews your support, that you’re out there reading what they have to say, let them know if you pick up the book or not, share the review so others see it and maybe discover their next favorite book!
Discussion Posts. I know that some say that longer posts just don’t work on tumblr, but I love seeing discussion posts and reviews on booklr! Wordpress blogs are more likely to have discussion posts or just longer posts about books and stuff in the community, but I would love to see this stuff on here to. The fun thing about tumblr is it’s a very versatile blogging platform, from just reblogging to adding your own content into the community. Maybe we’ve all skipped over a long post because “TL;DR” but I think that reblogs and comments are perfect for talking and adding to discussion posts, so why don’t we all utilize it more?
Support non-English Readers! Every time I see a photo of a book that’s not in English, I notice that it has significantly fewer notes than of pictures of that book in English. I’m not sure what’s up with that? A lot of times you can recognize the book because the covers are the same, it just happens to have the title in Russian or Spanish or whatever language. Lots of people don’t read in English and that’s GREAT! There’s a lot of languages out there and those who read in their native language deserve support for their blog too! (Obviously)
REBLOG REBLOG REBLOG. bookavid used to talk about this sometimes, but likes aren’t always great for bloggers. I put a LOT of love and work into my blog and so does everyone else in the community. We work hard on posts, reviews, and photos! Reblog them if you like them! That lets us know you like what we’re doing and more people see it and we feel validated for our hard work. It’s always depressing when I post something and it gets 10 likes so I post it again and wonder if people don’t like it? Is it worth putting the work into if no one sees it or seems to care? I know some people try to stick to the theme of their blog but when you can, support bloggers and reblog instead of just liking it and scrolling on!
I know booklr has felt dead recently, but I’m not giving up until you pry this blog from my cold dead hands! Reach out, talk to people, let me know if you want me to check out your blog, talk to me about books, talk to other people about books, make posts even if you feel your blog is small and unimportant (it’s not, fyi). I love this community and I want to see it thriving again! I want to talk to you guys, hear your thoughts, get recommendations, and make friends
-Dakota
P.S. What do you want to see more of on booklr?? Comment, reblog, message me, let me know 😄
To be quite honest, I’d love to see more of us talking. A huge part of what I loved about booklr was I’d get to see people’s small chats on the internet. And I realize that everyone may want to talk privately. A private conversation with someone can be an amazing thing. However, I loved coming online and seeing that we were all engaging with one another. I don’t really see that happening anymore. Or maybe I’m just not following enough blogs; I don’t know.
I just miss the general engaging that everyone did.
Hey now, I asked to hear from everyone so I’m happy you responded! 😊 I usually stuck to chatting privately because I felt people weren’t looking to see my conversations on their dash, but you have a good point. Not having interactions openly makes everything seem quieter and less active!
regarding the “support review” section, feel free to link me your reviews to spread and share. ive been putting my time and effort into my blogspot blog + book club rather than here but dont want it to die so im all for using this tumblr/followers to spread the word of important discussion posts and reviews :)
I love the whole idea of supporting non-YA genre books, I often find books to read based on the recommendation of others, so seeing books that aren’t YA getting some love makes me happy. Plus sometimes there are really good Adult and even Middle Reader books that can be enjoyed by all.

The Last of August by Brittany Cavallaro Review
Characters:
- Charlotte Holmes: Feisty as always and definitely too clever for her own good; making progress on the whole “recovering drug addict” thing
- Jamie Watson: Needs to stop thinking he’s in the “friend-zone”. Still thinks punching things can solve problems.
- August Moiarty: Still unclear if he’s a ~good~ Moiarty; don’t really understand what Charlotte ever saw in him; “deceased”
Plot (spoiler free)
After a crappy fall school year, Jamie and Charlotte seek normality in spending their winter holiday in England. Visiting the Holmes’ of course was anything but normal. Uncle Leander, Charlotte’s favorite and a close friend of Jamie’s father, comes home for Christmas from his secretive job of trying to solve an art heist in Berlin. All seems well until the Moiarty’s poison Charlotte’s mother and Leander goes missing. Flying off to Germany, Holmes and Watson seek to find Leander’s abductor and how it’s connected to her mother’s poisoning and the art heist. With the unlikely help of Milo Holmes, Charlotte’s older brother, and August Moiarty, her former crush, the four use elaborate disguises and tactics to piece together the case. In what started as a harmless hunt soon turns into a harrowing adventure across Berlin and Prague. Full of twists and turns, the second installment to the Charlotte Holmes series is sure to have fans at the edge of their seat.
Final Thoughts:
While not as fast paced as its predecessor, The Last of August is really good. Full of wit and banter between the dynamic duo of Holmes and Watson, and even a bit of tension on their relationship, Charlotte and Jamie struggle in setting aside whatever feelings they have to solve this case. I highly recommend if you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes and if you loved A Study in Charlotte
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas Review
I would like to begin by saying ASDFGHJKL, I literally had way to many feels for this book, it is for that reason I have to post a warning saying there will be spoilers so read with caution. Don't worry though I will put some *** to indicate the spoilers.
A brief synopsis "Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, beauty and the beast." When Feyre goes on a hunting trip she slays a beautiful wolf to bring home to her father and two older sisters. What she didn't expect was the wrath of a beast-like creature who whisks her away to magical and treacherous immortal lands. Little did she know that her captor was High Fae Tamlin. With an impending doom lingering over the lands it seems that everyone but Feyre knows how to stop it. Feyre has to face this dark ancient magic to save those she loves or doom Tamilin's world forever.
Characters
Feyre: She is a strong girl who only wants to protect and provide for her family. Being the youngest she has made sure there was food on her table since the age of 14. She initially is very distant and cold to the faeries but eventually warms up to them. She is very stubborn (I think more so than Celena/Aelin from Maas's Throne of Glass series) but has a kind heart.
Tamlin: As a High Fae he rules over the part of Prythian known as the spring court. He is very sweet, the exact reason as to why I will explain momentarily. While his ability is to shape shift into a huge beast, he has a very tame heart and nature. He too is very stubborn.
Lucien: Tamilin's snarky best friend and emissary is never short of a quip about Feyre. He seemed the most upset initially about the death of his dear friend but manages to keep that to himself rather than lashing out on Feyre. He definitely provides some comic relief to this rather intense book.
***Spoilers lie ahead*** Oh my goodness so the curse was so well written but of all things why have the members of the spring court trapped in masquerade masks. Also as far as ships go I'm definitely a Tamiln and Feyre shipper. See for me Rhys reminds me of The Darkling (before he tried to kill Alina) from the Grisha Trilogy so I really don't like him that much. Not to mention with only part of his power he could like read minds and control them so wtf can he do when he gets all of them back? Part of wished that Amarantha's death would be more dramatic and not at all the little one sentence to say that she was impaled. I totally saw it coming when one of the challenges involved reading since Feyre's skills in literacy were rather minimal. Mostly I was really happy when Feyre became a High Fae at the end just because she was so awesome. ***End of Spoilers***
Final thoughts Overall I have to admit with this book Sarah J. Maas is officially my favorite author. This book had romance, magic, and action all the makings of a great read. It is rare that I give a book 5 out of 5 stars because I believe that perfection is nonexistent but this book actually deserves that "perfect" rating. I recommend for fans of Beastly, Shadow and Bone, and Throne of Glass.
Front Lines by Michael Grant Review I would like to begin by saying that I am a huge fan of historical fiction, not to mention the WWII era, I personally blame great authors for that. Front Lines goes beyond that of a typical historical fiction and creates an alternate history or AU in a sense. A brief synopsis: A new law in the United States states that anyone over the age of 18 can enlist or be drafted for war, this law changed all previous wars because now women could fight, even fight on the front lines. The story follows four young ladies in their journey to war. Each has her own reason for enlisting, Rio feels obligated, Jenou wants to get away from home, Frangie wants to be a doctor, and Rainy just really hates Nazis. These four enter the war as girls and leave as dangerous and foul mouthed women. Characters •Rio Richlin: I usually don't say this but Rio was definitely my favorite character. Rio is very headstrong and receives a lot of shocked reactions when she enlists and even more when she became one of the best sharpshooters in her platoon. She was the type of farm girl who thought the baddest thing she could say was golly and now she drops FUBARs right and left (FUBAR means Fugged* Up Beyond Recognition *fugged is the equivalent of the f-word*). •Jenou Castain: Of all characters, she is the only one without her own narrative but you learn a lot about her from Rio. Jenou joins in hopes that she can get away from her hard home life and work some desk job surrounded by hot male officers. Unfortunately she too gets sent off to Tunisia with Rio to fight the Germans and Italians in North Africa. Homesick and boy crazy she realizes rather quickly that this wasn't what she wanted but it was too late to turn back. •Frangie Marr: Being a woman already made joining the fight hard, being a black woman who wants to be a medic felt nearly impossible for Frangie. Signing up only because her family desperately needed the stipend Frangie didn't think that being a medic would put her in harms way. Boy was she wrong. It's a little hard to try and go into detail about Frangie without any spoilers so I'm just gonna leave it like that. •Rainy Schulterman: Fluency in German made Rainy the perfect candidate for intelligence. Growing up in New York City in tenement housing surrounded by immigrants from all over Eastern Europe (Poland, Germany, heck even some Italians). The main reason Rainy signed up, to get rid of the men who were slaughtering her people. "That's right, asshole, one of those people." ~Rainy on being a woman sergeant and a Jew Final Thoughts: While this novel is strictly fiction, the story is raw and the places and battles are real. WWII was already a unique war, seeing it through the eyes of women on the front lines gave it a fresh point of view. I highly recommend for fans of The Book Thief or Number the Stars. I would give it 4.75 stars out of 5.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Book Review
I would like to begin by saying that I have had made attempts to read this book before but this was the most successful attempt. I truly enjoyed all the turns the plot took and the world building that Cassandra Clare did. All of the main characters (Jace, Clary, Simon, Isabelle, and Alec) are all very admirable characters who, despite some flaws, are genuine and good. Now to a brief synopsis. When fifteen year old Clary Fray heads to the club with Simon the only thing she was expecting was Simon's humor, not a bunch of kids with weird tattoos and swords. The thing is the kids weren't expecting that she could see them. Then when Clary's mom goes missing her world is turned upside down. In a matter of 24 hours Clary has been dragged into the shadow world and she meets other shadowhunters like Jace, Alec, and Isabelle. While the shadowhunter's are trying to find the Mortal Cup before the evil Valentine finds it, Clary just wants to rescue her mom. As a person who deeply enjoys the world of the supernatural, City of Bones did not disappoint. *Note this will have no spoilers, if you want to read spoilers check here*
Characters
Clary Fray-- Clarissa Fray is such an amazing female character. She is not described as unrealistically pretty, she's smart, strong, and talented which isn't always the female you see in literature. She is at times quick to judge and she is also very stubborn. Overall, Clary is fiery (like her hair) and she is kind/merciful. I think in the world of fictional female leads Clary is definitely one I would look up to.
Simon Lewis -- Simon, Simon, Simon... He is that best friend that you want to have, in a sense he is Clary's Rory Williams. While at times his humor might mask it, Simon so genuinely cares for Clary, she sees him as a brother, while he sees her as the strong independent woman who doesn't need him as much as he needs her. Alberto Rosende said (roughly), "The entire world could be bad and if Simon still had Clary he would be fine and happy." If that isn't friendship I don't know what is. Overall, Simon is gentle and sarcastic. He is so vulnerable around Clary and if often goes unnoticed. Simon is my absolute favorite mundie.
Jace Wayland-- Jace has been a shadowhunter since he could remember. After witnessing his father's death he is taken to the Institution to train with the Lightwood kids. Jace is very cocky and is very aware that many people find him attractive. Because of this he is a skeptic about love and can come across as arrogant. Overall, Jace provides some comic relief different from that of Simon and as well as a strong character arc for further development throughout the rest of the series.
Alec Lightwood-- Alec is definitely a misfit at the Institution. He, at first, is not the biggest fan of Clary because now she is the only thing standing between he and Jace his parabatai (and possible crush). Alec is scared and to some he is viewed as weak but I like to think that knowing that something is very scary isn't weak, it's just smart. Overall, Alec is a fun character and I hope that he will appear more throughout the rest of the books.
Isabelle Lightwood-- When you are the only girl you love the fact that you are the center of attention. Isabelle Lightwood is exactly that, the only girl in both Jace's and her brother Alec's life. When Clary comes along, well now there is someone more interesting, and new around here and Isabell is no longer the center of attention. While Isabell could use this as an opportunity to sabotage Clary she ends up becoming best friends with her. Overall, aspects of Isabell's personality reminds me of another character, Eadlyn from The Heir. She is strong and a great female role model to show that you can be both strong and beautiful.
Luke Callaway-- Luke is the closest thing Clary has to a father figure. Her mother's best friend, Luke has often looked out for the Fray family. But now that the dangerous Valentine is back he's been dragged back into a world and past that he had been trying to forget. Overall, I think that Luke is a very confusing character. I find him hard to trust because of his past, then again who honestly can you trust?
Final Thoughts:I would definitely recommend this book for fans of the supernatural, and classic horror films such as Wolfman and Dracula. Cassandra Clare did a beautiful job of painting a hidden world within one that she knew all too well. I would give this ★★★★.
Books and Cupcakes December book challenge Day Three: sorry I didn't get this up yesterday. I think that most books by Jane Austen have this sense of being overrated. While the works are still good, the quality of that, for lack of better words, greatness is often blown out of proportion. I'm not hating on these books just commenting on the amount of praise placed on an author who's writing skills are only slightly above average.
Books and Cupcakes December photo challenge Day Two: favorite series I adore this series, I jumped into the Harry Potter bandwagon kinda late but I am definitely part of the Percy Jackson generation
