My partner’s dad died after we’d be dating for about three months. I only ever got to briefly meet him three or four times at best. He was essentially the only family that cared about my partner and was the one to take care of her when she needed it most. I wish I’d had the opportunity to get to know him better as she always describes him as being an incredible man. What bothers me the most is that I regularly question whether or not I do enough to fill his shoes and look out for Gretchen enough to make him proud. So this song feels somewhat close to home.

Ben sprung this song on me for the first time when i was in a leather jacket and boots at a show, and I cried my eyes out and threw my whiskey at him afterwards. I love him with all my heart and my father would have loved him too.
