As someone who has no experience in Graphic Design, I took it upon myself to practice at creating designs and using software. A lot of my inspiration came from researching designs that I admired from Pinterest.

With the help of my knowledge in using Adobe Photoshop and watching some Youtube videos, I was able to produce and practice.

Here are a few pages that I creating in a small sketchbook. All materials have been taken from magazines as well as newspapers.

The first image, includes quotations and pieces from an article by the individual in the images. I added some coloured card as a border to make it look bold.

The second piece was taken from an aricle about nightlife, this particular part was based around Notting Hill Carnival. This represented a part of Caribbean culture in the 90s and 2000s.

Next, I cut out a whole in the page and stuck down the photograph on the other side. The letter O was placed over it to make it look like the subject was peeking through, on the next side you see the deserve image.

THE last piece includes blue cardboard borders to match with the cool undertones of the photographs, with quotes taken from the subject.

For this pieces, I used images from a photographers page sirius.film.

This double page spread was created using inDesign, which was my first time using the programme.

I tried the follow a colour scheme of orange and peach so it flows together. I also added some bold text and quotations.

Here is a piece that I created on Photoshop. The image was taken from Pinterest.

I used a brush tool to create the white outline of the subject and adjusted the placement to create a shadow effect.

I added the orange rectangle as a order to match with the colour scheme. The text is the name of the subject, showing the significance of the image.

My experience with Television and Radio

I originally chose Television and Radio as a degree and I believed this would be something that I would be good as, as I noticed that in college, Media was my favourite course; I really enjoyed it and also continued that get good grades through to my very last exam.

I college grew a love for podcasts and thought that this would be a really good career approach, which also fit in perfectly with the degree I planned on taking. Even though I leaned more towards radio, I really enjoyed learning about both.

This course allowed me to gain a closer insight into the media industry, learning how to use high quality equipment and software. My lecturers also gave us lots of beneficial tips that will eventually help us for the world of work. This course consisted of five modules, (television production, radio production, media context, content creation and content delivery). All modules consisted of a lot of group work.

Although I did have an okay experience on this course, and admired the effort that was put into helping the students fulfil their full potential, I believe that this course doesn’t benefit my personal creativity skills such as designing.

For my content delivery module, we had to put together a made-up TV show, coming up with a new concept and developing this into something that we could pitch to producers and companies. My main role was to put together a production folder, which I put together myself.

The front page was designed by me. The design was inspired by our colour scheme or pink, grey, and purple shades, which also fit the brand identity of BBC Three, our chosen channel to broadcast our show on.

This includes some annotations of my work and what did.

The production folder was 33 pages long, but these are some short, sufficient examples of what was included.

Why Graphic Design?

I believe that a graphic design course would really benefit me and help to develop my design skills even further, to secure a career within the art and design industry.

As mentioned, I studied Photography at both GCSE and A-Level. The main thing that I really enjoyed about this course, was creating pages for my sketchbook. I enjoyed using text and designing layouts to fit the aethetic of my projects.

I also admire magazine publishing, how each layout is edited and put together to create and eye catching and pleasing pages. Some of my favourite magazines are: galdem, i-D, Brick the Mag and Dazed and Confused.

Even though I have some experience designing, I think that a Graphic Design course, specifically at Salford would really challenge me and would help me attain some knowledge in the design field.

How has your education and life experiences so far prepared you for degree-level study?

Education has prepared me for degree-level study as it has given me an insight of what to expect, for example, work load, managing free time with study time and becoming more organised. It has also taught me the importance of putting as much effort is as you can the achieve the best results, this may include, staying behind in school in my own time, going to the library, preparing a routine or study timetable. Studying degree level has showed me more responsibility when it comes to attending classes as well as completely work; and not to procrastinate so much.

When and why did you realise that this was the subject you wanted to specialise?

I realised that I wanted to study Graphic Design when I started researching about graphic t-shirts. I came across a video of a Youtuber showing her subscribers how to transfer an image onto a t-shirt. I felt very fascinated by this; seeing how easy it was made me consider this as an option for the future.

I then started looking for inspiration on Pinterest and clothing websites, looking at the designs and layouts of the t-shirt prints. This then lead me to finding many different types of designs, for example: posters, zines and magazine covers and layouts, which really caught my eye. I believe that this is something I could really enjoy and build a career out of.

Coming up with options on how I could develop my design skills even further, I took a look a the course specification on the University of Salford website. I also took a look at Salford’s blog for art and media students as well as the the graphic design Instagram page. I felt very inspired and intrigued by all the student’ work, especially past students such as: Sophia Carey and Chloe Berrigan.

What do you hope to gain through degree-level study?

I think a degree would help me to gain a professional job in the design industry and as well as this, gain lots of experience. I am aware that the arts and design industry is very competitive, and I am willing to put this to the test and come face-to-face with any challenges. A degree in general is something that I could really profit from as it would give me more of a chance to gain a well paid and skillful job.

My section which was part of the group presentation. In this, I have evaluated that work that i contributed to as well as what I could’ve improved on. Along side this is my self evaluation.

Scene produced by my group for Television Production; my role as sound op.

Here is a link that a scene that was produced in a group for our Television Production module. I had the role as sound op.

For this task, my team mates completed story board and edited the scene, to fit in with the original peaky blinders scene, however add our own concept to it.

One thing believe I did well when taking on the role as sound op was that the sound came out quite clear, making it easy for people to understand dialogue and scenes. An issue that I came into contact with was that you could sometimes here background noise which was noticeable and interfered with our shooting. We had to stop and start a lot as we were filming underneath a train track, in addition, we had to wait for the train to pass which was time consuming. You can also hear the movement of the microphone at times which interrupts the scene.

Overall, the sound turned out well, however there was room for improvement.

The advert for the radio show that I produced and edited using Adobe Audition. I recorded this all on my phone, emailing clips to myself and putting them in order. One issue that I found with this was that I was sometimes to close to the mic; you can also hear some background noise.

The idea of the advert was developed to fit our COVID-19 themed magazine show. I had to develop a script as well as come up with a name.

The music and sound effects were downloaded from a site that gave us access to free sounds, this was freesounds.org.

My interview that I produced for a group project over lockdown. To edit this, I used Adobe Audition.

This was harder to put together than it usually would be as it all had to be produced from home, due to restrictions of not being able to meet up with interviewees and go outside. My friends (the interviewee) recorded her answers to my questions on her phone, which were then sent over to me. I was then able to match up my questions to her answers,

For sound effects and music I used, Freesounds.org and Youtube. This made my radio segment more interesting to listening to as it including a variety of sounds. However, it did sound repetitive at times.
