Book project summary

This project was a hassle. I started by wanting to recreate a bible style but in a witchy way. I ended up creating a more hand made feeling piece. The borders I made gave me problems as I used the master pages but when changing the page order for print it messed up my page layouts. I learned I can’t cut straight lines consistantly even with a ruler. If I ever do this again I will include a border in my design. I also realized the need for me to shift my images so that they don’t get cut off by the cutting. I’m proud of what they ended up looking like.

Response: Grid System as Backbone of Every Good Design

The idea expressed in this article is that increasing the number of columns in a grid can allow for more variation in the layout and structure of a page or spread while still following a grid structure. The article showed and explained various types of layouts used by the Svet Evangelia. The layouts started by the handmade ones that were literally glued and measured by hand by the technical editor. Later, in 1994, Svet Evangelia started using a three collum page layout. This three collum structure was basic and marks the beginning Svet Evangelia use of computer made grid structures. Later, the creators of the Svet Evangelia tried a 6 collum grid but it didn't do what they wanted. By 1998 one of their people created a 12 column grid to base their publication off of and it ended up working out. Overall the consensus for this is that a good grid layout is essential in creating good design.

Response: The Oscars Showed Us Why Typography Matters

After reading this article it became clear to me that even high-level art critics and enthusiasts don’t understand typography. At least not for simple things such as cards that tell you something like a name and a movie or album. The Oscars obviously hired someone to create their logo and to design the stages and backdrops that play and the musicians and actor and actresses and many other professionals that led to the final product but they couldn’t hire or even ask an opinion of an artist such as a graphic designer to look at their winner announcement cards. Even a new low-level intern for a graphic artist would have had a few pointers to these cards as even they had been schooled in the hierarchy of type on various media presentations including paper. The Oscars don't seem to understand the importance of being able to read and understand what is being said in type if they did then this mistake wouldn't have happened.
