i won’t be happy unless whoever gets casted as zhao gao in the qin empire movie/tv show is either uyghur or a woman. or both. sorry i’m really in it too deep now
there’s a new historical show about the qin dynasty based on a li kaiyuan pop history book coming out this year 😭😭 i have personal beef with li kaiyuan but luckily the specific time period they chose to focus on isn’t anywhere close to the topics i actually care about. i’ll be able to safely ignore it, but it frustrates me that THIS is the caliber of historical works that producers choose to adapt. li kaiyuan is so bad! the historiography is just so amateur and sloppy, you could tell the author is barely trained in analysis and yet he’s lauded as this crazy qualified historical “detective.” at most the cover looks kinda nice? but i fail to see how it could be actually engaging.
the show itself seems to have gotten into some drama from the get-go, and honestly i think the criticism so far is deserved. if someone treated historical accuracy as a joke in order to elevate the mc to the detriment of my oshi, i’d be mad as hell too! either way as long as li kaiyuan’s reputation is hurt, i’m satisfied. i just don’t understand why the rest of the qin empire hasn’t been adapted yet. is it just sun haohui being a lazy bum? there is clearly a market for qin-focused narratives!
also i just want to say that the ying zheng designs in recent shows all look so off. please stop giving him this awkward stache! it’s so uncommital! can someone please have a tanned, hairy, fat ying zheng with a massive beard? i’m begging! this can’t be his visual legacy:
ok whatever i don’t know what i’m talking about anymore. qin empire adaptation 2027 please? meep? meeeep…
Eunuch pride flag
Eunuch: a traditional social category for people who have eunichoid sex traits or who are socially categorized as though they do. The term has traditionally included three major groups: - castrati: forcibly castrated men, often slaves - congenital eunuchs: intersex people with eunichoid traits, often congenital forms of hypogonadism - voluntary eunuchs: people we'd now generally understand as trans (edit to add: @beyond-mogai-pride-flags pointed out in the comments that some also did it for religious reasons! ty!)
Eunuch is a socially constructed category and in different times and places it has also included asexuals, men who spontaneously develop eunichoid traits due to disease/injury, and men who are unable to procreate for whatever reason.
Bright version on right, sensory friendlier version on left. Stripe meanings: - Dark teal: for having traditional connections to both masculinity (blue) and neutrality (green) - Intersex yellow: for intersex people who use or have been described as eunuch/eunichoid, both historically and presently - Orange: for men who are castrated or develop eunichoid traits iatrogenically (i.e. due to treatment for disease/injury, e.g. testicular cancer). On the rainbow LGBTQ+ flag, orange means healing. - Dark red: for forcibly castrated men. Dark red for blood/violence. - Magenta: for trans people who have used the term both historically and presently - Grey: for other groups sometimes included under eunuch who feel a connection to the term
The anonymous individual who requested the flag told me they wanted a eunuch pride flag that was explicitly intersex inclusive, as the already existing one is castration-oriented. Sorry it took me several months to get back to you! 😅
This flag is public domain.

"Top 10 Pranks That Went Too Far" compilation where #1 is Liu Bang founding the Han Dynasty
hold on i gotta Google something. Okay that's funny
People are asking what this means, so:
Liu Bang was a provincial constable (basically a sheriff) in Classical China who one day was transporting some prisoners who escaped. The penalty for allowing prisoners to escape was death, so my man looked at his prospects and said "welp, in for a penny, in for a pound" and decided to go join up with the dudes who'd been his prisoners 5 minutes ago. This kicked off a chain of events that led to him becoming a bandit chief and eventually a rebel general and ended with him overthrowing the Qin dynasty and becoming Emperor Gaozu of Han.
And you think you had a weird day at work
Important additional information: This was during the effective reign of eunuch advisor Zhao Gao, who played the part of loyal servant totally not resentful over the whole eunuch thing, while consolidating power at court and putting into place a ton of policies, like the laws above, that were either extremely stupid or extremely well done sabotage designed to bring down the ruling dynasty, as part of a Sheev Palpatine esque long game on the people that killed his family and took his genitals.
I am a firm adherent of the latter theory, it being way more fun, and in that view it means this Catch 22 nonsense creating a successful rebel general was just as planned.
my cartoon adaptation of the qin empire coming NEVER!!!!!!
