sam’s ‘No sir, not before everything’ will always be one of my favorite samdean moments. baby alpha sammy already protective over his omega older brother
another reason why increasing samdean's age gap to the double digits gets me going aside from the obvious "i wanna rail my older caretaker figure so bad" x "i used to take care of you and now you've grown big" trope is also because that means. increased age gap for samdean means dean is older when mary died, and that means john's handing over mary's role to his eldest would be more immediate and flawless. the change would also be brief and automatic and 'just like that', that neither of them would really notice until much later.
dean's in his late teens, tall, easily rocking a crying baby sam in his arms whispering softly, "c'mon sammy, baby, won't you be good for me? daddy needs his rest as well, we don't wanna wake him up." and dean mistaking the way john's staring at them for annoyance instead of something else, but john's view of mary and dean was already distorting and merging.
and adding the sometimes john calls his eldest "baby" too. how toddlers would repeat what the people around them says and in cases like learning to call your parents mom and dad because they call each other that.
kid sammy calling john "dad" because that's what dean calls him, but then he starts calling dean "baby" because that's what john calls him.
the first time dean gets called that, he stares, and then he fake cries, tickling baby sam, saying, "noooo, you are the baby!!" and sam just giggles and repeats, "baby baby baby!" flailing his chubby hand on dean's cheeks.
what i'm saying is, sam grows up being so used to calling his big brother "baby" because their dad did too. dean bristles and is embarrassed when sam's in his teens and is still calling him that, but eventually dean gets used to it because it's clear sam won't let it go.
also, aside from "baby", if john switched it out now and then between that and "doll", and little sam hears and gets used to knowing his big brother gets called with both terms, and then through it, sam will one day misspoke (or on purpose) and introduces the third nickname, which is just a combination of both (that he wonders why none of them had ever trip over their words and calls dean the wrong thing until that day): babydoll.
it'll be funny if he misspoke in front of dean AND john and they both are staring at him with different expressions, and sam is horrified but also a little smug.
another reason why increasing samdean's age gap to the double digits gets me going aside from the obvious "i wanna rail my older caretaker figure so bad" x "i used to take care of you and now you've grown big" trope is also because that means. increased age gap for samdean means dean is older when mary died, and that means john's handing over mary's role to his eldest would be more immediate and flawless. the change would also be brief and automatic and 'just like that', that neither of them would really notice until much later.

somewhere along the way, john starts calling his too pretty eldest son "baby" with a voice too soft and too teasing, his eyes too soft. and he's still strict and harsh at times, but he's a lot more indulgent then. they stay in towns longer than john wants to just because dean asked him, says, "can we wait for a bit? sammy's got this really important thing at school, and you get to rest too..." staring wide-eyed and hopeful from where he's dutifully cleaning john's weapons on the floor. john rolls his eyes and sighs an indulgent, "okay, baby."
when sam asks dean about it, dean only laughs and says, "jealous because you're the baby of the family? i can start calling you baby if you want."
but sam says, "no, dean. you call me baby like i'm a kid. dad calls you baby like you're his wife."

This is a tribute to @nymphalidaze ´s amazing fanfiction "Homeward from Afar" !
anyway.. alpha sammy getting muzzled.. hhshzzz...
biting as the common symptom of a young alpha developing one of their alpha instincts coming from the desire to put their mark on someone/something they consider theirs. and because they're still young, their canines are all also just growing out bit by bit, so there's this itching feeling to bite to relieve their gums.
teething little alpha sammy won't bite their alpha father and the only one he seems to want is his omega older brother dean who's yet to have his first heat either. but then john says it's fine, take care of your little brother. so dean does.
then he just has little sammy clinging to him at any possible moment he's able to, blunt teeth gnawing gently on dean's skin. dean's arms are filled with sammy's bite marks, small 'o' shapes of his little mouth. it's cute.
as sam grows and dean starts having heats, dean makes it clear that asking permission is needed and that sam can't immediately bite dean just any time he wants bc that's for little kids. and then sam would huff and puff and scoff before he pouts and looks at dean with wide eyes and a grimace, showing his blunt fangs, "dee, may i? please?"
only then will dean roll up his sleeves, grinning, "go on, little pup."
later, as sam's nearing the age where he'll start preparing to be a ripe alpha, his teeths are already changing to become sharper and ready for claiming. his bites that results in bleeding are more frequent and whenever he's looking for a place to gnaw, sam's starting to sniff higher and higher, from dean's hands to his shoulder until it's clear sam's eyeing his neck. dean starts wearing john's thick leather jacket and turn the collars up, he doesn't take it off when sam's biting, even when sam's glaring and scowling at the offensive jacket.
and then dean's heat hits, and this time it affects sam not in the cutesy, teething little alpha brother way that's cutely possessive. sam's holding him down, growling, pupils wide, mouth open showing his teeth. his canines are ready to take a mature, permanent, claiming bite.
it's probably good, then, that john chooses that time to barge in. he throws his jacket at dean's head, effectively covering him, and meets sam who's scrambling angrily at the interruption, immediately going to wrestle sam out of the room, though sam's fighting john off in order to stay. john drags sam out and dean doesn't see them again until his heat ends, and when he goes out, sam's already standing by the door, his tall stature slouching, his floppy bangs looking like dog ears.
dean barely notices the muzzle attached to his brother's lower face until sam drops to his knees and stares up at him, pouting behind the muzzle and putting on his puppy eyes as he says, "sorry, dee."
and dean, who's having a hard time reconciling the memory of being held down by his mature alpha brother with that same person on his knees in front of him right now, can only say, "uh, yeah. sure," and doesn't even have to reach far or bow down to ruffle sam's hair, sam's tall enough and he's already automatically tilting his head towards dean the moment he sees dean extending his hand.
"whatever, puppy," dean says, looking curiously at sam who's really enjoying the petting and the scratches as if he's an actual puppy. "what's with the new decor?"
sam scowls, "dad says i should stop biting."
"because you wanted to bite me? i was in heat and you're... newly mature. and you were too used to biting me all the time," he stops the petting to lean down, feeling over the muzzle to look for the latch and take it off sam's face. "he already got you out. isn't this a little too much?"
sam exercises his jaw once it's off, stretching his mouth, his canines are peeking out, but it doesn't feel as intimidating as it was. he stands up, looks at dean, sheepish, "i kinda bit his hand? and he got pissed."
dean's grip on the muzzle tightens when sam shrugs and leans in to nuzzle on dean's shoulder, sniffing dean's scent, whose smell is clearly still giving off an omega's heat. "says if he sees me bite even your finger, i'd get muzzled again."
there's a time before sam left for stanford when sam and john are always at each other's throats, their tug of war over dean is how they conclude who wins. dean gets fucked so much even while he's asleep that if he gets woken up in the middle of it, he knows who's inside him by the drag of their cock.
when they're like this, sam and john fucks exactly the same. angry and rough and messy and almost always straight to fucking. same hunger, same desperation, same guilt by the way they grip on dean's hips and pierce their blunt nails deep. same angry grunts, same unforgiving pace.
then there's the rare occurrence of them inviting themselves into dean's bed without a pulsing vein on their temples. dean melts as easily, if not more, with their identical cheeky grin, soft eyes, gentle touch. he feels loved like that, and it's these moments he holds onto to keep pretending.
the concept of sam not knowing about johndean and when he got angry at john at the hospital, "you care more about killing this demon than saving your son," he secretly felt something's wrong in the way john replied just as angrily if not more outraged, "do NOT tell me how i feel."
all of a sudden he's reminded of all the times he felt the same uncomfortable feeling climbing up his spine, that it's not a new, unique feeling. he's felt like this before, this suspicion.
maybe at some point sam suspected, but he never knew for sure because whenever he thought about it, he ended up thinking if that was why it seemed to him that dean was john's favorite, and then he'd feel too guilty for even considering it.
so, sam confirming it too late until john's already dead and his older brother has been grieving more like a widow rather than a son, and they come across a case with a husband selling his soul in exchange for his wife's life, and dean's speaking and getting worked up as if he were placing himself in the wife's position, and everything clicks into place.
all those years when sam weirdly felt as though he was a third wheel (which he chalked it up to him being the black sheep youngest kid of the family), john getting angry at the accusation of not caring about dean (when at the time he was already grieving his son (his second wife?) and was preparing to sell his soul), dean dismissing sam's "if dad ever had a thing with ellen" (it had been dean who'd been john's special thing).
what sam thought john's angry words were his usual "don't speak to me like that," but it was actually because sam didn't know the depth of their relationship.
dean as john's last reminder of mary, and dean as what sam remembers of mary because he never got to know her at all... it's through dean doing things for sam that he got to know bits and pieces about her, like dean making burnt toast and saying, "mom used to do it like this," and singing little sam to sleep, "mom used to sing this song."
and then dean comforting john after hunts, putting a hand on his shoulder, saying, "it's okay, dad," which reminded john whenever he had a hard day at work, of the way mary used to wrap her arms around him and said, "it's okay, you're home now." and also dean attempting to recreate mary's greasy winchester surprise.
dean getting so fucked up as he grows because he's not mary and he'll never live up to her image, and then finding out for himself that mary wasn't what they knew her to be at all. he was too much like mary, and she was not like him at all at the same time.
finding out that dean was like mary in ways all of them didn't know she was, in the ways that he was that he thought made him unfaithful to her image, and he was never like mary in ways john remembered or in ways sam came to know her through him, because she was never that person in the first place.
