growing up, all mikey ever knew was just being gerard's little brother. he grew up on the edges of his own life. the string of words that always aligned to "take your brother with you!" and "can you bring mikey?" was a marker of teenage embarrassment caused by isolation and a lack of friends.

everything he liked had some attachment to somebody else's identity or interests. he didn't feel like he had even a semblance of a self-built identity, not once in his entire life.

he was too shy to talk to people, and too hesitant to pursue interests that would require others to perceive him, the more major reasons why mikey didn't think he'd last very long when gerard asked him to be bass in his band.

come 2006, and it's clear as day that people are attracted to him. it was weird at first when he first noticed it. he didn't think he was very visible to begin with, quiet in interviews while hiding behind boyish glasses and zipped-to-the-top hoodies. he had girls (and boys, who had always stirred a messy feeling in him equivalent to interested confusion) ready to throw themselves at him, desperate to have him be the next best thing in their fantasies.

mikey got around; there was no real denial of that, but nobody ever stayed. gerard had lectured him that these weren't people who liked him, but instead just wanted to get with him. he wasn't gonna listen to his dumb older brother, though. he had spent his entire life in gee's shadow. he was twenty-five, now, he didn't need to be looked out for anymore. so what if he wanted to make a shitty decision for himself just this once? obviously, the high didn't last for very long. it's really pathetic. you can only smile at so many strangers, kissing paths down their stomachs and lapping at their necks before it becomes a muddy blur of faces and rooms. some showed their love through violence, and it eventually became the only thing mikey cared about. tenderness lost its place in his mental dictionary as he became bored with the gentle kisses and slow thrusts. intimidating and sketchy behavior was the new indication of a good time when he sought it out, hoping to god it would end in busted lips and strangulation marks. those were the gifts of his patience until the next angry body came to take it out on him. he could lick his wounds and press on bruises until they faded before he had to find his next fix in a local bar or post-show crowd.

he even started using too much teeth during blowjobs, expecting to get the shit slapped out of him.

by mid-2007, mikey had also found love in benzodiazepines. rock bottom has a basement. he only gets more desperate for harm, stealing ties from gee's luggage to strangle himself, pulling the ends until the fabric dug into his sweaty, pale skin. when everyone else on the bus was fast asleep, sometimes even doing it in the bathroom while they were wide awake. he loved the fuzziness in his face, the disconnect he got in his legs until he fell forward on his knees and hacked. he had a noticeable "corpse stare" on and off stage.

"get your shit together," he was scolded by everyone who knew of his issues. he was only ever scolded anymore. curled up on couches and only half-listening to each person who knelt next to him, trying to break it to him that he wasn't gonna last like this. gee had even checked his pulse every few times he walked back. it made him feel like he was sixteen all over again.

☾ CHARACTER BACKSTORY ☽

Guilt can be hard to shake. Thinking you could have done more to prevent tragedy takes a toll. The first time Cristian Santos guilt’s sting, he was 9 years old. The Santos family was known for being close knit. He lived with his parents, grandparents Joao and María, and four younger sisters. Ordinary from the outside, they were actually a well-established line of vampire hunters. The family had set up base in Mystic Falls after hearing there had been increased vampire activity, and although they followed leads of supernatural action out of town, Mystic Falls stayed their primary place of residence. Cristian, as the eldest son, was always eager to follow in his father's footsteps. Due to his age, however, he was told to stay home with his sisters and grandparents while Fernando and Gabriela went on a routine trip to follow-up on a potential lead At first, everything seemed okay. Joao told Cristian stories about their youth and life proceeded as normal. Then, it happened. They came in the middle of the night. No one had ever been brave enough to break in before, but this was a full-fledged attack. As the elders fought, Cristian tried to get his sister Beatriz to the safe room. Heloísa, his 8-year-old sister, grabbed the twins. It's hard to say what happened next. Cristian got Beatriz to the safe room. He waited, but no one else came. Just when he was preparing to look, there was a scream. The blood curdling sound chilled Cristian. He couldn't move even when he heard a cry for help. He hid with Beatriz for over a day until his parents came home. The aftermath was brutal. María was dead. Joao had received a head wound. Later, Cristian would overhear his parents say that Joao might've been okay if he'd received medical attention sooner. Instead, he was put into a care facility for constant assistance. The twins and Heloísa were nowhere to be seen. While Gabriela and Fernando were glad to see two kids alive, they were still devastated. Cristian couldn't help but blame himself. If he had been braver, maybe he could have saved someone. Instead, he'd hid. It came as no surprise to Cristian when he was told a month later that he was being sent to Brazil. He could live with cousins, study, and train. Fernando could barely make eye contact with Cristian, and he never wrote. Gabriela did, and shocking news came a year later: Valentina & Vanessa were back. There was no sign of Heloísa and the twins had no idea where they'd been or what had happened. Cristian wanted to come home, but Fernando said no as the twins needed to readjust. Over the next 8 years, Cristian would only see his mother & Beatriz on visits. At 18, Cristian was finally called to return home. He wasn't sure what to expect, but everything felt off. Even though Beatriz had warned him, he was still unprepared. Fernando was cold, Gabriela anxious. Seeing the twins in person after believing they'd died was surreal. They didn't seem to blame Cristian, nor did they seem totally right either. Valentina seemed to struggle more than Vanessa, and Gabriela refused to discuss the last 8 years. While none of it made sense, Cristian was too ashamed to pry. Years have passed since Cristian's homecoming. His parents called in a favor with the Sheriff's office, and Cristian took a job with the Mystic Fall's police department that allowed him to finally move out. His apartment isn't much, but it's his own. Cristian has stayed close with Beatriz, and gotten to know the twins a little as well. He'll always feel guilty he didn't help them or Heloísa. Though his missing sister is rarely discussed, it hasn't stopped Cristian from looking for her. He wants answers about who hurt his family, and he has a strong idea that vampires were to blame. His guilt and anger do manifest in his hunting at times, but he's doing his best. For most of his life, he's carried the burden of that night. While he can't change the past, he can try to re-earn his father's favor. If he can be a good hunter and figure out who attacked the family, maybe Cristian will be able to finally sleep at night.

☾ CONNECTIONS ☽

☾ FERNANDO SANTOS and Cristian's relationship never recovered in the wake of the attack. Gabriela always said that Fernando blamed himself more than Cristian, but it never really felt like that. Fernando asked Cristian to protect his sisters and he couldn't. The fact that he was only nine years old never really seemed to matter. Now, as an adult, Cristian is desperate to make his father proud. He'll find a way to prove himself. ☾ BEATRIZ SANTOS is the sister that Cristian is closest with. She's the only sibling that he saved that night, and as she grew older, she kept in touch. Beatriz's visits to Brazil were some of the only moments of contact that Cristian got with his family. Beatriz doesn't seem to get a lot of attention from their parents, and she doesn't seem that interested in hunting vampires either. Cristian doesn't care if she's into the family business. He just loves his sister and is grateful for her levity. ☾ LIZ FORBES having the role of Sheriff makes her Cristian's boss. For the most part, she's a pretty good one. Liz is on the Founder's Council and knows about vampires. The same can't be said about the entire police force, however, so Cristian's skills as a hunter are especially valuable. He knows more than the average recruit and is privy to information quicker. It's nice to feel needed for once.
