Evergreen Architecture

As more of the earth’s surface is swallowed up by the built environment, architects are increasingly advised to integrate urban flora and fauna into their designs. Whether developing green roofs, living walls, abundant indoor courtyards, or balconies that connect interior and exterior spaces, the urge to intertwine nature and architecture has never been more apparent. Embracing this ubiquitous trend, Evergreen Architecture surveys a broad spectrum of residential, institutional, urban, and rural spaces.

But as change occurs and solutions to the climate crisis are being integrated on the ground, many new questions are posed. How do residents keep moss-covered walls alive? How can a skyscraper uphold the weight of hundreds of trees?

Evergreen Architecture investigates this movement from the perspective of the architects leading the charge whilst offering diagrams and plans to help the reader understand how each building came together and how it intends to survive.

Landscape House Milad Eshtiyaghi

Iranian architect Milad Eshtiyaghi creates wonderful concepts for unique contemporary homes. He often uses interesting landscapes as the backdrop for sculptural architectural works. His latest concept is called Landscape House and it acts as a continuation of the varied surfaces of the mountainous forests of Switzerland.

True to its name, Landscape House seems to emerge from the forest floor in two sweeping white volumes. By rotating the forms, Eshtiyaghi resolves the cantilever by allowing one volume to rest on the other. Each extrusion ends with a façade of floor-to-ceiling glass that allows for unobstructed views outwards. The careful overlap and rotation of the volumes mean that occupants can enjoy two uniquely framed views from the comfort of indoors.

The Floating Eco-Hotel, Quatar,

The hotel generates electricity by automatically rotating its position and converting the energy of flowing water into electricity.

The Floating strucure also sports 55 vertical wind turbines that can generate 25kw of electricity each and double as sun umbrellas for guests. The vortex-shaped roof is not only a striking design feature, it helps to collect rainwater. Other environmentally friendly touches include a system that turns food waste into fertilizer for the gardens and a wastewater treatment setup.
