Handcrafted Fairytale Book Covers by Mandarin Duck

Jewelry designer Aniko Kolesnikova, best known as Mandarin Duck is recognized for her whimsical, sophisticated, ornate work featuring mystical and exotic creatures, such as owls and dragons, as well as other natural elements like floral aesthetics. An expert at working with polymer clay, Kolesnikova’s YouTube channel, Mandarin Duck was created for the purpose to teach people how to make beautiful handmade things. 

Now, also a book sculptor, Kolesnikova wishes to teach people how to construct their own handmade journals, which resemble imaginative covers and creatures from a fairytale.

Mystical Photos of Illuminated Forests in the UK by Ellie Davies

Ellie Davies enchants us with surreal portraits of forests that glow with mystical fairy lights and ominous waves of mist.  The London-based abstract photographer creates her captivating shots in natural areas throughout the UK. With the woods as her canvas, fireflies illuminate desolate clearings, and cascading flurries of glitter dust dramatically lit patches of trees.

Davies says she likes to explore images that juxtapose human and natural elements, calling attention to the sharp divide between personal identity and interconnectivity. She does this by positioning out-of-place manmade elements — such as paint, glitter or smoke — within the context of wild landscapes.

“Forests are potent symbols in folklore, fairy tale and myth, places of enchantment and magic as well as of danger and mystery.  In more recent history they have come to be associated with psychological states relating to the unconscious,” the artist says. “Against this backdrop, my work explores the ways in which identity is formed by the landscapes we live and grow up in.”

I am not an open book. The hardness of my cover and the complexity of my contents were not designed for weak fingertips and feeble minds. I have been opened once or twice. My spine stroked by flimsy hands, held with a broken focus, my pages slightly skimmed through, only to be put down mid-sentence. I have yet be placed in the gentle care of a reader that doesn’t mind that my chapters are often cut short, my edges sharp and my pages loose; one with the intent to finish. As I accept my place on the shelf, I no longer ache to be taken down, opened up and validated by the comfort of fleeting eyes. I have begun to find solace in my own story, comfort in between the lines and a curious fascination for the pages still blank. I no longer worry if my analogies are beautiful enough for Pulitzer Prizes and Nobel awards. I only pray that one day, my sentences will leave traces of ink on the heart strong enough to comprehend them and I am no longer taken out of context. I have always had an affinity for words but I did not know true love until I read my own.
