Dear Tim

I think that I learned a lot about writing through the course of this semester in this class. I genuinely believe that my writing has improved through my free writes and my major papers. My first paper, a movie analysis, was something that I had never done before. Before class, I would have had no idea how to even approach such a task. By using our books, I was successful in developing a thoughtful piece that I am proud of. I’m very happy that I now know how to analyze a movie and I’ll probably always analyze them in my head now. My second piece was a persuasive essay on why college tuition should be cheaper. With this essay at first I didn’t have too much included on the other side of the argument, for example, a college’s point of view. It was only through the help of my peers that I was able to recognize that this was key to my argument and it helped strengthen my writing. The writing center also helped me to look over what needed to be edited when I had trouble seeing it myself. I will now not be afraid to ask them for help because I realize that they can really help me in the future when writing other papers for other courses. My final major essay was a restaurant evaluation for one of my favorite places. I enjoyed writing it every much because it’s somewhere where I feel happy and at home and I liked getting the word out about how great it is there. With this essay, I felt a lot more confident in my writing and I guess you did too because I received a distinction on it on the first attempt. Having the model text in our book was extremely helpful because there was actually a text there that was similar to mine in topic.

My favorite class activities were when we listened to the poetry slams. Every single one was very moving and full of emotion. I felt all of what the reader/writer was trying to get across and they made me think more deeply than I previously had. I think my free writes now are a lot more developed than what they were in the beginning of the semester. I am able to get my message across more neatly and quickly without really thinking about it as much. My free writes have ultimately been longer and just better in general. I am grateful that I learned so much from just one little task that I was given every day. Like I said previously, I loved the poetry videos, and I also loved doing free writes. To be able to be given the freedom to write down whatever I wished was very nice especially since there’s not any other class where that’s going to be allowed. One thing that I wouldn’t keep/I did not really enjoy was the movie Food Inc. Yes, I agree that it was a nice text to show to display bias in movies and media but I had the most difficult time watching it for the animal cruelty. I understand that it’s a real thing but being forced to watch it made me very uncomfortable. I would say that this course exceeded my expectations. In high school I was always in honors English classes and therefore I had fairly low expectations for this class because it was a mix of both honors and parallel students. However, I feel that this course helped everyone out regardless of their English class background and for that, I was very pleased. I appreciate all of the writing that was assigned even though at the time I was probably a little bit annoyed for the tedious tasks. One thing that I would also reconsider is leaving all of the major pieces to the end of the semester. I felt that towards the end I was a little rushed and I would have liked to have a little more time to develop some papers. Possibly moving one essay towards more the middle of the first half of the semester could be a solution to that. I definitely understand that I have a weakness in sharing my writings. My writings are sometimes things that I have no wish for others to know. Other times I am just too shy to share my feelings towards certain topics and have issues participating because of it. I hope to continue to work through that in the future, probably when I take the speech course next semester. I excel in working with small groups such as our multi-genre project because I just feel a lot more comfortable when I know that not everyone is listening. I think that Crystal and Maddie influenced me a lot though the use of peer editing. They helped me see another side of my essay that I would not have noticed on my own. I do not have many issues with grammar and spelling so most of their critics were on developing an argument more. I hope to one day be able to see what needs to be added on my own but until then, I will ask others to look over my work to help me improve. I would hope that I influenced them as well by peer editing their papers. They both had some issues with spelling and grammar but I hope that when they look back over their papers to edit themselves, they see what things they may have missed.

I think that I deserved an A in this course because I reached all of the criteria in the A component category. I received a distinction grade on all but one of my papers, that one being the group project. I have a developed writer’s notebook that I continue to add to which I might just make into a dream journal when I’m finished with this course. My digital portfolio has transitions and lots of pictures which were not something that I would have thought about previously to this course. I have always responded to the class discussions online when assigned and I’ve tweeted each time that I was asked. My revised papers were definitely not just cleaned up, I worked very hard to develop them better and work on the critics that were given. I thank my mom for helping me edit those and give me feedback as well. I have not missed any classes since the start of the semester and I have jumped into all group work with a smile. The only component that I cannot say was a part of the ‘A’ contract was sharing my writing with the class twice. As mentioned, I have some problems with sharing my thoughts and opinions.

I was taught to look at food more critically than before. I realize that not everything the food industry says is to be trusted and to watch for that. I will now watch for this to make sure that what I eat is safe and healthy. Please continue to teach this because I learned a lot from the book even if I didn’t always enjoy reading it.

Process Narrative of Unforgettable Pizza!

I chose an evaluation over a proposal because I thought it would be more fun to write. I can be more creative with an evaluation since it’s more an opinion than factual based. After the peer evaluations from my rough draft I decided to add another picture to give the reader a better feel of the atmosphere in the restaurant. The photo is of the original sign that used to hang at the Trenton restaurant. I also added customer reviews from different websites to add depth to my evaluation that De Lorenzo’s is a great place to go. I included more about the décor and the feeling of the restaurant because of Crystal and Maddie’s reviews.

Unforgettable Pizza!

Have you ever wondered what some of the best pizza in the country tastes like? Having a difficult time deciding on where to go with the family? With my family it’s always, “Where do you want to go?” and then, “I don’t care, you decide,” until eventually a destination is agreed upon. More often than not, for my family, our go-to choice is De Lorenzo’s. De Lorenzo’s in Robbinsville, New Jersey is the place to go. This family has been making pizza for three generations, they definitely have the art of tomato pie making down. Yelp gives it four and a half stars but this seemingly regular pizza joint is almost always mentioned on lists for top pizza in America!

One of the most important things to go with your meal is your drink choice. I highly recommend enjoying your pizza with a Birch Beer. It’s similar to root beer if you’ve never had it before and it pairs perfectly with a hot slice of tomato pie. The menu is simple, just pizza and some seasonal salads but that doesn’t matter because you know you’d come for pizza anyway, it’s famous! The pizza comes out, is set on the table and in a second, the scent of the hot tomatoes will waft into your nose. Yum. A thin-crusted tomato pie with anything you choose from their medium-sized list of delicious topping options. No matter what topping you choose, you'll always get something worth coming back for. Everything is so fresh, there are no gimmicks needed to bring people in. Don’t like pizza with onions because the onions get soggy but love onions? Boom. Problem solved, they call their onions ‘late onions’ because they put them on halfway through cooking so they’re still nice and crunchy. Don’t like the thin pepperoni slices that you would get on any pizza at a regular place? Bang. Thick slices are generously applied and cooked to perfection. While I’ve never personally had their red or white clam pizza it is praised by Steve L, “Amazing! Highly, highly recommended!” (Yelp). For your first few bites I recommend using a fork and knife or else risk burning your mouth. Immediately once the piece first hits your tongue, an explosion of flavor comes forth. The tomatoes are sweet because they don’t add very much to them, the cheese is its delicious counter, all along with the crunch of the crust. You'll be devouring the slice so fast and reaching for another, I promise.

The wait service is fairly good for a place that is always packed. I rarely have a problem with needing more of my birch beer. Other places make me wait for ages before asking if I need a refill (Yes, I have finished drinking the cup of ice with some water that you brought to me). The wait for the pizza can get a little long especially when it’s busy (always) but it’s well worth the wait. The decor of the place is very casual and simple, just a nice looking Italian restaurant. The lighting is slightly dim but not to the point of where you have trouble seeing the people that you’re with. The décor was never really too important to me, the smell of the

Fellow pizza fanatic, Art M, says, “If you like a rubbery thing called American pizza don't go. If you want a national treasure this is your place! A tomato pie has thin crust and flavor! It ain't your Papa Johns!” (Trip Advisor). De Lorenzo’s is perfect to bring just about everyone, even my grandmother loves it! Anytime you’re in the area, I highly recommend making a beeline over there. Make sure you come early or else you’ll have to wait in line with all of the other pizza lovers!

Process Narrative for Why College Tuition Should be Lowered

I chose this persuasive essay on the expense of college tuition is something that obviously affects me personally. I strongly believe that it should be decreased and regulated by the government because the debt is such a big problem. If other countries have found a way to make it work, I think that we should be able to as well. I picked persuasive over informational because in my high school English and social studies classes, we would always be forced to write informational papers so it’s something that I’m not as familiar with. After writing my first draft, I looked over what my peer said needed work and I fixed it. I smoothed over my transitions and rearranged my topic sentences in order to make them stronger. I also added a school’s viewpoint on why they charge so much for tuition in order to strengthen my ethos. The peer reviews definitely helped me improve my paper.

Why College Tuition Should be Lowered

Today, most students progress from high school to college because it is a stepping stone to a good career. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that about 68.4% of high school graduates were enrolled in colleges or universities in 2014. (College Enrollment and Work Activity of 2014 High School Graduates). With so many students getting a higher education, the job market has become more competitive to the point where having a degree is now almost mandatory for most careers. It is extremely unfortunate that the cost to attain these higher paying jobs starts with paying a large sum of money. Tuition needs to be less expensive in America because getting a higher education should be encouraged, not discouraged. The crippling debt that normally comes with a degree should not exist.

Why should anyone ever be turned away from learning? If college tuition prices continue to increase, and it’s only the upper class that can afford to attend, what about everyone else? Just because someone has started out with less money, doesn’t mean that they are any less brilliant. I live fairly close to Philadelphia so I know how hard it is for some kids to get through high school without dropping out. How can we tell those kids to keep trying to go to college if they’re never able to afford it? Education should be a right, not a privilege for those who wish to seek it. The President of Morgan State University is quoted to have said that, “If you come from a family where annual income is below $36,000, you have about an 8 percent chance of completing college.” (Wilson). This statistic is absolutely appalling. Education should never be about economic status, it should be about ability. If a student from one of the effected families really wishes to go to college, they have the choice to take on some serious debt.

1.2 trillion dollars was the total amount of student debt that the United States accumulated in 2014. On average, each student that graduates with a diploma also graduates with $33,000 of debt. (Students & Debt). That’s more than what many people make in a whole year. On top of that number, interest builds on loans forcing people to spend much of their lifetime just trying to get away from their loans. I would consider my family to be upper middle class, since both of my parents have well-paying jobs. Even with assistance from them, I still am probably going to have to take out some loans in the next few years. Hopefully, those loans will be federal loans because private ones are even harder to pay off with the sky rocketing interest rates. Bankruptcy isn’t even an option for those who are drowning in their loans. College tuition loans, both federal and private do not wipe away after declaring bankruptcy which raises the question: what can a person do when they can’t pay them off? These massive amounts of debt from higher education only further the wage gap between the wealthy and the poor rather than help eliminate it. With all of this debt, it creates a difficult situation for most people just graduating from college. If a student doesn’t get a job right after graduation, they just become buried in interests and fees making it extremely difficult for them to make a living. College should not leave such a burden after graduation, instead it should be an experience that assists people to pursue the field that they love. The real question is, what makes the price of tuition so high?

The government holds the power to influence the expense of tuition. Some people believe that in order to eliminate the high cost of college, the government would have to charge more in taxes. While this may seem like a valid point to keep the prices as they are, it isn’t necessarily the only option. The government spends 53.71% of their discretionary spending on the military and only 6.28% on all of their educational spending. (Federal Spending: Where Does the Money Go?). While the military is definitely important, if the government would move more of their budget towards educating the uneducated, there may even be less of a reason to have such an expensive military. It is up to voters to implement changes. The government will not change unless there is a call to action. There are other paths that can be chosen if taking money away from the military is not something possible, such as raising sales taxes on certain items slightly. In Idaho, there is a proposed tax initiative to increase the price of cigarettes and use the money gained to lower college tuition. The proposed initiative would affect the tuition of state universities and public colleges. (Russell). There is no excuse for tuition to be so high when there are so many opportunities to lower it. From the school’s standpoint, it can be understood that they are forced to compete to gain the attention of prospective students. The flashier the buildings, the more advanced the technology and dorms, the more interested some students become. The schools do not have very much control over the cost of tuition unless they do not compete with other universities making renovations. It’s completely up to the government to help fund the schools or to provide more substantial grants to students in need.

College institutions need to stop being used as businesses to gain money and instead used for their intended purpose, to teach willing students. There are already government officials that seek to lower the high costs of tuition. It’s now our job to go out and vote for them. Even if there aren’t many candidates proposing lower tuition, it’s the people’s responsibility to bring forth these issues and force the government to address them. One of the best ways to force government officials to vote for more funding towards universities is calling them and explaining your concerns. America needs your help in order to make a real change.

Book Thief Process Narrative

I chose this movie because I feel that I have a personal connection to the Holocaust because part of my family is Jewish and the other half is from Poland. Thankfully no one in my close family was a victim of the tragedies that occurred but I still find the subject to be fairly personal. I would definitely say that this is one of my favorites because the storyline is so engaging. To revise my piece I changed my introduction and conclusion by voicing how I felt about the movie. I also added a photo of one of the scenes that I analyzed.

The Book Thief Movie Analysis

Any movie that claims to be about the Holocaust is generally going to be an interesting watch. The topic is just too compelling. The Book Thief was originally a novel by Markus Zusak that was adapted into a movie in 2013. It was directed by Brian Percival and takes place in Nazi Germany in a medium sized town. It revolves around the life of a young girl named Liesel Meminger after she gets put up for adoption by her mother. Liesel is taken in by a middle aged German couple with no other children and a low to moderate income. The primary point of the plot is Liesel realizing that Hitler’s policies are wrong and then trying to hide the fact that she is completely against them in a country that worships the party’s leader. I always found the movie to be one of my favorite Holocaust movies because its perspective is from an innocent young girl that grows up thinking the Nazi’s are heroes. Percival uses many techniques to add more depth to the production such as the mood he creates with the setting and soundtrack.

The first shot of the film takes place in the clouds with an omnipotent voice narrating. They are assumed to be Death from the statements that they, “avoid the living” and that, “you’ll meet [him] when it’s your time.” From this insight it’s foreshadowed that death is most likely a rather large part of this motion picture. The camera is angled down toward a train while the narrator is still speaking, this emphasizes how much authority the voice has, and how little of importance the lives of a few people are to a figure as powerful as Death. The shot moves onto the train and moves down the aisle giving the viewer a look at some of the passengers aboard the full train. The scene is drab and dominated by lots of shades of greys and browns without any bright colors, giving a melancholy feeling to the viewer. Coughing can be heard coming from multiple people and you can see woman with a handkerchief rubbing her nose. Everyone is bundled up and yet still some people look to be cold. From these insights, it can be inferred that there is some sort of sickness going around and it’s very contagious. The camera moves towards Liesel who is sitting next to her mother while she holds her son and sings a lullaby, her mind clearly elsewhere. Liesel notices that something is wrong with her brother who has blood coming out of his nose and unseeing, glassy eyes. The foreshadowing of death being near has proved to be correct so far. Instead of showing their reactions, the shot pans back to above the outside the train again and the whistle from the train is blowing. The whistle was cleverly used by the director to express the anguish that the Meminger mother felt at that moment over the loss of her son.

Another scene starts with a close up of Liesel singing a Nazi allegiance song dressed in some sort of children’s uniform, her hair in tight braids. The camera backs out slowly to reveal the multitude of children also singing this song dressed identically. It’s clear that the children are wearing the same outfit to show that they are unified with the fascist government and its policies. To emphasize this point, all of the children appear to be proud of what they are singing and find nothing wrong with the lyrics. There are also massive red swastika banners in the background of the choir promoting the Nazi party. The director is underlining how much the government is a part of German culture. This also alludes to the brainwashing techniques that the Nazi’s would use on the children in order to ready them to be soldiers. The singing continues as screams and cries are also added to the soundtrack when the scene changes to Nazi soldiers destroying the windows of various stores and beating any resisting Jewish community members. The words, “Kristallnacht-Stuttgart, November 1938,” are displayed in the corner of the frame. Kristallnacht translates to mean the Night of Broken Glass in English. The brutality displayed is absolutely sickening to the viewer as people are physically dragged out of their homes screaming to be beaten and killed. The continued singing throughout the scene draws attention to the idea that primarily, the Germans are very supportive of the policies that are being carried out, even if it means the death of a former friend or neighbor. This scene made me feel disgusted with the German citizens that had formerly cared about someone being affected by this but choose to stay quiet which is what I believe was the directors purpose.

It’s now Hitler’s birthday and the streets are lined with the Nazi party flags. Liesel and her father are getting ready to go to a parade in honor of the Führer. This ‘parade’ which is actually just a massive book burning lead by some Nazi soldiers, is widely attended by the townspeople. The soldiers are proudly standing in front of many party flags dressed in full uniform. The camera is angled from what could be the view of one of the soldiers looking down at the crowd representing the power of the Nazi’s. It is night again which is usually the only time that any Nazi activity goes on in the movie. Percival may have wanted this to by symbolic in the way that the night is when the darker side of Germany comes out since the day is more dominated by Liesel’s relatively carefree life. Each family is carrying a torch to help ignite what the soldiers have dubbed, “intellectual dirt,” also known as any form of media that shows their enemies in a positive light or is against the German government. Cheering erupts from the crowd who wholeheartedly supports the dictatorship as the fire is lit as a lead soldier continues his speech promoting the war. The camera switches between the soldier speaking, Liesel, and some other townspeople who are commending the speech. The faces of the random citizens are emphasized in order for the viewer to understand that many Germans undoubtedly were for the destruction of other humans. By giving faces to these Germans, the director displayed that these regular people that were committing these awful crimes against humanity and not just the tough looking almost inhuman figures that everyone imagines them to be. Liesel is cheering and smiling along with the other Germans but when the solider preaches that communists are also an enemy, her smile completely disappears as she realizes what was said and how it related to her birth mother. Liesel is finally beginning to understand what is really going on in this war and when the crowd starts to sing a Nazi anthem, she gets a close-up and her participation is forced and unenthusiastic.

This young girl cannot now claim to be innocent in this matter. She has woken up from the dream that Hitler has painted for all of Germany and she cannot go back. More books are being thrown almost emphatically by the crowd who is continuing to cheer as the filthy books are being destroyed. A boy that aspires to be a German soldier that goes to school with Liesel hands her a book which forces her to burn it or else be branded a traitor. She does so reluctantly and stares into the fire long after she has thrown the novel. This is meant to show how remorseful Liesel feels towards her actions. It can be assumed that she is not the only one that has to put up a façade in order to stay safe in Hitler’s world.

Compared to other Holocaust movies such as Life is Beautiful or The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, this movie has always stood out to me. I think that the viewpoint of a German family who is still scared of the government was fairly original. In Life is Beautiful, the perspective is of a Jewish man and in the Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the family the little boy is from is a part of the Nazi’s. By providing the new outlook through Liesel’s eyes, the viewer is able to understand a different side to the Holocaust. I believe that it is always good to see multiple perspectives to comprehend the whole story of what really happened in this dark time in history.

Percival uses the setting, his characters reactions and contrast to get certain messages across the viewer. While someone may not understand all of the subtleties that he uses, after taking a second look, they become clearer. Above all, the techniques utilized in the movie have always evoked strong emotions from myself after watching it. Every time that I see this movie, I end up crying because of how real the director makes it seem. I believe that Percival intends for the viewer to feel sorrowful for the people that lived through this tragedy but also more grateful that the life we live now is not the same.

Considered Living Car-Free?

Ashley asks these questions that may come across a students' mind because it increases her ethos to relate to the reader. She wants the reader to know that she understands the thoughts that go through their heads. "Do I really need a car?" is most definitely the most important question because without answering it, other questions cannot be answered.

I would say that the freshman 15 is a problem if you aren't aware of it. By teaching college students about the possibility of gaining 15 pounds over the course of their freshman year, it encourages them to practice healthy habits. Ashley incorporates this one fear that many share and provides a solution to it by furthering her position.

Ashley wants to persuade you that it's much better for you to go car-less rather than that you just should because it makes the student more likely to go through with doing it.

The author uses global pollution to appeal to the students' ethics by including how he or she would help the environment by going car-less. All of the facts that she includes are cited.

I think that by including the FAQ, Ashley wanted a quick way to get more information across but overall I find it to be helpful for someone that is seriously considering going car-less.

Pollution and Progress in China

This photograph taken by Peter Parks displays the connection between the industry and the regular lives of citizens in China. The most noticeable feature of this photo is the color. Everything is grey and dull from the smog, even the people riding their bikes. One of the citizens is even wearing what looks to be possibly a bright colored shirt but because of all the emissions in the air, has lost its color. This symbolizes how the industry has effected the common people in a negative way. Notice that no one in this photo is driving a car when you can tell that what they are riding is definitely a road. This leads me to believe that the citizens realize that their air quality is a huge problem and they are trying not to make it worse or that they cannot afford to purchase a vehicle in a country where their main source of income is automobiles. This may also mean that the common citizens do not agree with their governments policies involving the industry and air pollution even if it makes their country more wealthy. When you look at this image, it makes you feel sorry for the people that are forced to breathe in this toxic air and possibly even angry that a country is doing this to its people and the world. The photograph is clearly a call to action to stop China from continuing its ways.

Breakfast at Manory’s

I definitely found this review engaging because of how much the author included their own life by including that they are also at college and they have a hard time waking up to get breakfast which I can relate to. They used a strong voice throughout the review.

As stated before, I believe that the author included his habits to seem relatable to the reader. They made the reader know that they have similar tendencies which makes the viewer more likely to actually pay attention to the review.

I think the photograph of the empty plate was meant to show how delicious the food at Manory's really is. So good that a single bite cannot be left on the plate or else it would just be wasteful. It makes me think of a really satisfying meal.

Popcorn: Which Kernels Are King?

I do not think that including a comparison of other snacks was completely necessary. It didn't have anything to do with the topic question. It was a nice comparison but maybe he should have left it out.

When buying popcorn, there's really only one brand that I really enjoy. Even if it isn't probably the most healthy of the choices, I doubt that I'll stray from it because then I just wouldn't eat another brand. The intended audience is probably adults that want their families to eat healthier or just people looking to make slight changes in their diet.

I think it makes sense because not everyone is looking for just the healthiest popcorn in a bag. The author includes different ways to make popcorn healthier yourself so it's an alternative to buying bagged popcorn.

As mentioned before, some people prefer to make popcorn themselves so it's better to include everyone that this article could affect rather than just people buying bagged popcorn or else the title of the evaluation would be different.

I can see Consumer Reports not including customer reviews because they would probably judge of off what popcorn tastes the best and therefore it's possible that they may choose one that isn't as healthy as the other options. The article is focused on the health aspect of different popcorn brands so including this may sway readers to a different opinion.

Russia Destroys Piles of Banned Western Food

The article was about how Russia has been completely destroying European food that was imported because of the Western sanctions on banks and oil over Ukraine. The proscription had been in place for a year now but the country has recently become more serious about the law being broken. Putin ordered tons and tons of food supplies to be incinerated. Importers have been trying to sneak in food products by not disclosing their origin country. This destruction of food has given Russia a sense of pride because not that long ago, their country could hardly provide for themselves. Now Russia is able to be wasteful with what they have, except some say that they should be sending the food to other places that have a higher need for it rather than wasting it.

The author definitely looks at this piece of news with a sense of 'Oh Russia, what are you up to now' humor. Throughout the article Kramer adds little jokes comparing Russia's poor inspections to Swiss cheese. The entire story seems a little comedic so it would be difficult to not add some humor to the article. Kramer uses a lot of comments from people dealing with the food destruction to guide his article to give it life. He also makes sure to include the names of the foods and the cities where they are being incinerated and thrown away to communicate validity.
