There’s a greater than 1 in 3 chance that Oregon (my homeland) will be hit by a huge earthquake in the next 50 years. How huge? My friends over at OPB made a cool video illustrating the logarithmic Moment Magnitude scale that’s used to measure earthquake strength.
If a single grain of sand represents the power of a magnitude 3.9 earthquake (noticeable, but nothing to worry about), it takes 570 pounds of sand to represent the power of a 9.0 earthquake like the one that devastated Japan in 2011.
That’s quite an earthquake. -Tajha
It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.

If you’re interested in checking out this newly-formed island off the coast of Tonga, you’d better hurry up. It will likely erode back into the ocean over the next couple of months since it’s made of ash.

Quick! Go visit Tonga’s newest island before it disappears! -Tajha

Get ready to roll out some dough, because it’s Pi Day!
What’s that, you ask? Think back to geometry class. Pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference (the distance around the circle) to its diameter (the distance across it). In mathematics, it’s been represented by the Greek letter “π” since the 1700s.
For the math challenged, think of something that’s round. Might I suggest … pie? It’s the perfect example because, in addition to being round, it’s pronounced the same way as pi. And you can even use pies to calculate Pi, more or less.
Now, it’s been a long time since I sat in math class and learned about pi. Here’s what I remember: The value of pi is about 3.14159. (The value of pie, on the other hand, is, of course, deliciousness.) Pi is often shortened further to 3.14, but it actually goes on forever.
Some genius grasped the idea before I did and started Pi Day — which, of course, is celebrated with pie.

It’s Pi Day tomorrow! A very special Pi Day, because on March 14, 2015, at 53 seconds past 9:26 AM the date and time will spell out the first 9 decimal digits of the constant π. I’ll be celebrating by eating pie.
This GIF is a visual representation of C = 2r*π (the relationship between the circumference and the diameter).
*These smart folks have pretty much convinced me that Tau (τ=2π=6.2831…) is actually a better constant. And on Tau Day (June 28th), I get to eat TWO pies. But we have to wait until 2031 to get those extra decimal digits for τ.
