Artisan Boat Makers of Pulau Duyung - Terengganu, Malaysia

Pulau Duyung (translated as - Mermaid Island) is the home of the artisan boat makers of Terengganu. Due to the increasing cost of timber, boat making has become a declining industry - a legacy continued only by a few craftsmen. 

Beneath the clear blue skies, we were left to explore the handiwork on our own. We marvel  at the ingenuity of building seaworthy boats without using a single nail, only wood pegs - the engineering and artistry of the traditional boat makers.

Majestic Angsana at Taiping Lake Gardens - Perak, Malaysia

Spending time at the Lake Gardens in Taiping was a real treat. All the lush, foliage - bursts of green over the blueblack Bukit Larut (previously known as Maxwell Hill) in the background. A total change from my normal concrete jungle scenery.

The Taiping Lake Gardens was opened in 1880, making it the first public garden in Malaysia. Chung Thye Pin donated the land, that was initially an abandoned tin mine, to be turned into a recreation park.    

There are ten man made lakes and ponds at the park. But the main attraction would be the row of ancient Angsana (in English: Golden Rain) trees, standing tall and majestic along the Residency road.

As we walked along the road, we were greeted by these beautiful Angsana trees - their branches stretching over to the other side of the road touching the lake.

In Malaysia, where it is consistently sunny and hot - finding a shaded area outdoors, where you can just sit and talk, is not an easy thing. So it was a real change to have the Angsana trees over us, providing enough shade to sit down comfortably on the grass - reading our books, lulled by the sound of nature.

Meeting Dwarapalas in Bali

Meet the gate keepers to the Hindu temples - the Dwarapala!

Dwarapalas are fearsome looking statues. They were one of the things that I found fascinating in my travel to Bali. To me, they are both menacing and beautiful, at the same time.

Kampung Morten: The Village in the City @ Malacca, Malaysia

Kampung Morten is a riverine village located by the Melaka River. Kampung is the Malay word for village. According to Wikipedia, Morten is the name of the British official who was responsible for the setting up of the village.

Kampung Morten has been gazetted as one of Malaysia's national heritage sites. What's interesting is that it is a village located amidst the busy Melaka city (the capital of Melaka). And, the small village is made up of houses built in the traditional Melaka Malay house style.

The one thing that has always fascinated me about the Melaka houses, which is also coincidentally its very distinct signature is - their tangga batu or concrete steps. Unlike the other traditional Malay houses, the steps of a Melaka house are usually painted in bright colors, and decorated with intricate patterns made up of colorful tiles (often with floral motifs).

Hopes and prayers for all on board on MH370. For those making ignorant comments, Malaysian Airlines is one of the world’s best airlines, it has only had 2 fatal crashes in their 41 year history. Please don’t be insensitive and say you’ll never go on board Malaysian Airlines. Malaysian Airlines should not take the blame because life is unpredictable. Things happen in this world that we can’t control. Right now, all we can do is pray for the passengers’ safety and for all their loved ones waiting for them to arrive.

remembering the king crab feast in hokkaido: a day in the fall somewhere in otaru a restaurant its name forgotten - a lot of japanese spoken but not as much understood - we watched his quick hands swiftly snipped claws and tore open shells showcasing white meat tinted with scarlet brightness - three foreigners in search of the soft sweet succulent king crab.

unfinished. started, distracted, moved on to the next interesting find. cant stop buying them, yet can't seem to finish them. maybe i will this year. i think i will.

i am unlucky in lucky draws. period. a case in point, last year at the company's annual dinner, for one of the bigger prizes, my-almost id number (they had all our work ids in those big transparent containers) got picked. as the announcer read the first four out of the eight digits aloud (which took like forever), i put on my best poker-face (pretending very hard not to care, so as not to jinx my first ever lucky draw win). and he went on to read the last four numbers - 5, 9, 6...(me: it's gonna be me!! finally, winning something in a lucky draw! yayyy!) and...3 (insert the broken record sfx here). i guess not, my number is 5-9-6-2! a difference of just one, what torture it was watching the lucky person walk up the stage to claim his prize. yup, unlucky in lucky draw, that's me...
