So for some weird reason, Mickey isn’t allowed to officially appear in the Ducktales series, so I love the fact that the DT staff found a loophole by having Donald make his own Wilson that is clearly supposed to be Mickey with the design and voice yet is never called Mickey once. I love it when series find loopholes in order to do something. Also, kind of funny how Donald can’t be understood a lot of the time yet he can speak perfectly clear when doing a Mickey Mouse impression.

Ducktales giving kids an amazing story. Great plots, good morals, and now inclusion (the wheelchaired woodchuck and Violet’s parents). And one of the best remakes ever.

And for everyone who grew up watching 90’s afternoon cartoons, we’re getting all of that and the awesome surprise of great cameos and characters from other 90’s Disney cartoons.

Goof Troop Goofy, PJ, and the amazing nod to teenage Max and Roxanne from A Goofy Movie.

Don Karnage from Tailspin.

The Three Caballeros.

There’s so much more I haven’t listed and we should expect a lot more. Like Daisy Duck finally making an appearance in Ducktales. Goofy and Daisy being the first Mickey Mouse clubhouse characters to ever make an appearance in Ducktales, unless you count watermelon Mickey (voice by the actual Mickey Mouse VA). Also, Goslyn from Darkwing Duck, more Tailspin characters, and Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers. I can’t wait.

There’s also this amazing reference to the actual Camp Woodchuck Kitchen at Disneyland Tokyo.

We gotta talk about all the foreshadowing in this episode and we gotta talk about it like, now.

Not only was it foreshadowing the events that’d happen later in the show…

It was foreshadowing the debate in the fandom.

Was/Is Della Duck a bad person, or a good person? Did she betray her family, or was she a hero?

A lot of us are on Dewey’s side, believing that whatever happened, Della was doing something good.

^None of us are coming up with theories like that, but you get the idea.

But a lot of us are on Webby’s side, believing that Della did something wrong.

I feel like the writers wrote this episode anticipating that this would be the very debate that would break out in the fandom after “The Last Crash of the Sunchaser!” aired.

People were quick to jump to the conclusion that Donald was devoted to these babies and Della wasn’t - that she was irresponsible, neglectful, and impulsive. Yet so many little nuggets of information we’ve gotten about Della before and since seem to point to the opposite.

So was Della good or bad?

^I believe this clip here is the biggest hint. Webby said the only way to know for sure if Della was a hero or a backstabber would be to go in the temple. More about that moment later.

Throughout the episode, Dewey is determined to prove that his mom was a good person, much the way a large portion of the fandom is determined to prove her innocence by theorizing scenarios in which Della taking the Spear of Selene was a heroic act to protect her family.

And again, Webby represents the large portion of the fandom with the less generous view of Della’s character.

Much of the fandom, myself included, feels that this would be an utter waste of Della Duck’s animated debut. When one considers the effort the show creators have been putting into doing female characters justice, it wouldn’t make sense that they’d make Della Duck a person we’d all hate whose entire story could be explained in one monologue by Scrooge in the first season.

This is one of my favorite asks Frank has answered about Della, which he posted on 12-28-18:

With all the care that the show creators are taking with other female characters, including delaying Daisy’s debut until they can “do right by her,” it wouldn’t make sense that Frank would be so excited for us to get to know Della if we know her already.

And yet, the debate goes on, as the writers anticipated. But remember the big clue I mentioned earlier? That they’d find out for sure in the temple? Webby repeated the clue.

And then they met Selene.

But not before a scuffle. Dewey so badly wanted to believe his mom was a hero, he wanted to stop looking for answers out of fear.

^And there it is. That’s the big question at the heart of their (and our) debate.

But like Webby said, I think we did find out the truth in the Temple of Heroes and the Garden of Selene… from Selene herself.

Selene, who was a good friend of Della’s, thought the idea of Della betraying her family was ridiculous.

“more than anything in the world!” …And that’s saying something, considering Della had been all over the world. Della loved her family more than anything she’d seen and anyone she’d met on their many travels. Her family was the most important thing to her, not adventure.

Not only did Selene, as a character witness, assure Dewey that there was no way his mom was a family betrayer, but she also assured him that yes, she was a good person.

“What Ever Happened to Della Duck?!” will be airing March 9th, and that episode title is a dead giveaway that we don’t already know exactly what happened to Della just from “The Last Crash of the Sunchaser!”

But we have more than enough clues to know that Della, while three-dimensional and flawed as Frank called her, was a good person who loved her family more than anything.

I have a feeling “What Ever Happened to Della Duck?!” will have the same effect on the fandom that meeting Selene in the garden had on Dewey and Webby. It may very well end the debate of whether Della was a family betrayer, or a hero.

What are your thoughts on Della's actions towards Louie in "GlomTales," particularly that whole "If you want to be a part of this family..." scene? I get that she's trying to have him not to hurt the rest of his family, but the way that she's acting here doesn't line up with the person who asked her own kids if they would let her back in their lives and wanted to be with them as much as possible. I won't lie. She seemed out of character here, and I found that disappointing. What's your take?

The answer may lie in the moment before.

I think she was talking about herself, in a way. She was speaking from experience.

As much as Louie was like “buuuughh…” and rolling his eyes, hearing her lecture him about his actions negatively affecting others around him, I feel like Della, when she was recording that message, also had Louie’s remark flash across her mind.

She probably thought, like he’d ever listen to me about this…

So she dropped the smug instructive parent act and sighed. I could almost hear her internal dialogue in the line.

“Look, your plans…” Ugh, no, not plans. This is about Louie. “Your schemes…” yeah, that’s it… “…they only lead to bad things for your family,” just like my plans did… “If you wanna be a part of this family, you’ve gotta stop,” I desperately want to be part of this family…

…but now that I know how much you resent me, I don’t know if I’ll ever get to be… please don’t do what I did. Please don’t lose your place in this family because of your schemes.

It was a warning, not a threat.

When someone asked Frank this morning about this moment, he said “ deep down they are both very similar in their assumptions that things should be easy and their frustration when things aren’t, whether it’s schemes or parenting.”

But aside from Della being frustrated that parenting isn’t as easy as she thought it’d be, I couldn’t help but think of the Spear of Selene incident, and I’m sure Della thought of it, too. I’m sure it plagues her every day.

So many parents want their kids to avoid the mistakes they made, but letting a kid know you’re speaking from experience - letting someone you’re supposed to have authority over know that you screw up - that kind of vulnerability can be scary. You have no idea if the kid’s gonna throw your mistakes in your face once they know about them in a “You can’t tell me what to do because you did the same thing,” kind of way. And Louie’s literally done that now, so Della probably doesn’t trust Louie enough to be totally vulnerable like that. But she still wants him to avoid the heartache she’s faced.

Unfortunately, without that full verbal disclosure that she was talking about herself, the effect wasn’t quite what she intended. Louie probably did take it as a threat instead of a warning. He’s struggled to find how he fits into this family, and Louie Inc. was his way of trying to do that. Now she’s taken that away, and from what he can tell, threatened his place in the family.

Miscommunication makes the most delicious angst.

Della in the DuckTales intro appreciation post!!

One of the things I love about this show is how they handle Della being an amputee.

The writers don’t make a huge deal about it in that they don’t have Della wallowing in self-pity over it, or complaining in every episode about phantom sensations or her prosthesis being uncomfortable, even though those are probably things she realistically deals with from time to time.

The writers also don’t have her family making a huge fuss, treating her like she’s disabled and incapable. They don’t constantly ask her if she’s okay or if she needs to sit this adventure out or any of that. It seems they live by the unspoken rule Don’t make a fuss unless Della does, and since she doesn’t, they don’t.

At the same time, the writers also don’t ignore it entirely. Frank talked about how they have moments when Della uses her prosthesis to her advantage, or times when she cleans or adjusts it.

But then there are also little moments like the above gifs.

In “Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks!” Della spent the whole episode walking, running, and jumping, seemingly with no problem, just like many real amputees can. But she landed on her prosthesis jumping out of the log, and seemed to land on both feet jumping from a ledge. Then she ran some more. Maybe by the end of the episode her residual limb was starting to bother her, but she didn’t complain. She just borrowed Louie’s head and Scrooge’s face to lessen the impact on her residual limb as she stepped down prosthesis-first.

And then in “Quack Pack!” we see Louie and Scrooge giving her a hand after they all fell through the ceiling together. They don’t make a huge deal out of it like, “Oh no! Are you okay? Are you hurt? You poor, already-disabled thing!” They just noticed she wasn’t getting up right away and lent her a hand without saying a word.

Sometimes I pay attention to how she moves, since Frank said they worked closely with the Amputee Coalition on how she’d move, and I’ve noticed after a whole lot of physical activity, she’ll tend to put the majority of her weight on her right leg.

Just like many amputees in real life, there are times she moves around like she would if she still had both of her natural legs, and if she wore long pants you couldn’t tell the difference. But there are also times she needs a little bit of support… and still other times when her prosthetic limb is an asset rather than a hindrance. How she’s doing in one scene might not be how she’s doing in the next, because that’s how it is for an amputee sometimes. How a residual limb feels can change in a moment.

It’s these little moments when you can see the care the writers have taken with Della.
