The Latin we speak
The terms dominus and domină come from domus (house, home) and their meaning is landlord/landlady; from Latin domina → domna → Italian donna (woman), that has taken on a generic meaning.
Christians used Dominus with capital letter D to talk about God; from Dominus comes the Italian name Domenica (Sunday), "the day of God"
Latin nauta (sailor) is tied to the verb navigo, -as, -are (to sail); cf. Italian "astronauta" and English "astronaut" → astrum, -i (star, constellation; from Greek αστήρ, αστέρος) + nauta, -æ (sailor)
the prefix in- has a generally bad connotation; in + ius (right, law, justice) = iniuria, -æ (injustice, offence; c.f. Italian ingiuria, ingiustizia) and in + video, -es, -ēre (to see) = invidia (envy, c.f. Italian invidia) which means "give a bad look"
