And it’s even more heartbreaking when you see the transition and how performative it is.

I was a camp counselor at a science/nature camp when I was 16, for a bunch of 10 and 11 yr old girls. And one day while we were waiting around for the naturalist to come get us to go on the day’s hike, the boys cabin we were grouped with was exploring the area and overturned a log and found a salamander. One of the boys picked it up and they brought it over.

My girls all went “ewww, gross, keep it away!”

…right up until I said “whoa, cool, can I see it?”

This boy handed me the salamander and all of a sudden my girls were clustering around. They wanted to hold it. They were asking questions about it. They had stories of other times they’d seen a lizard or caught a frog or something. A couple of them went with some of the boys to look under another log and see if they could find another one.

All they had needed was permission to be curious, to show interest instead of disgust. And as soon as someone they were looking to for cues on “how to be a girl” showed interest, as soon as they didn’t feel like they had to perform socially-acceptable girliness and pretend to be grossed out in order to gain adult approval, all that natural curiosity and the fascination most kids have for the natural world just came bubbling right up.

My latest comic for The Nib was written by my friend Mike Thompson- it’s his first published comics work! 

The Nib has been a steady source of income and a huge support to me and many other indie cartoonists for years. They publish amazing work, but will be cut loose by their financial backer in July. You can read the official post about it from editor Matt Bors here.  They are still running their kickstarter-funded print magazine, but have to put digital publishing on hiatus until they figure out their next steps. If you’ve been thinking about supporting their membership program, now would be a good time. They have levels from $2 to $40 per month. I really don’t want this to be my last Nib piece!

I remember a lot of the episodes, especially the winter holiday episodes since there would be a stream of them around my birthday week leading up to Christmas.

On the day Steve left I was heart broken. I learned that “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” was no longer running (or re-running) episodes, PBS KIDS was changing to smaller & shorter shows and tried to add in more 3D stuff (bleh-), and other shows/channels I knew were going through lots of changes. But anyway, as soon as the episode ended I couldn’t cry. I don’t know if it was uncertainty or that what I was going through was making me emotionally-less available (family issues)...

...but I will say now after watching this video 18-19 years later I felt that child part of me finally cry as if a part was finally put to ease.

Hope we can hear more from Steve with the 25th anniversary. If not then that’s okay and I think I’m slowly becoming ready to accept that bit...
