In my opinion, they have something like cetacean skin—smooth and quite rubbery. Fur just seems wrong, and scales aren't much better, and I'd prefer to think that they're just really weird mammals instead of an amalgamation of mammal and fish.

im thinking something like this, but im not sure about the head and neck joints. its going to be hard to make them seem elegant without gaps- obviously this version just has the pieces overlapping so you dont see the gaps.

i accidentally made the body on this test one too wide, but i think you can see the vision.

My hope is to eventually figure out how to make a jointed doll with snap together joints and this one seems like a good candidate? many of the joints don't need to be proper ball joints and only need to be hinges.

The blue lines are sections that need hinges that go back and forth. Now, I could do the entire thing like that, but ideally I think a ball semi-joint on the shoulder/hip and possibly the hooves would help a lot with posing, so that the joints can be slightly angled outwards or inwards depending.

The head/neck is the hardest bit. I'm thinking that a hinge joint that raises it up and down with a separate ball joint that twists or tilts the head. im not sure if that makes sense? It cant be a standard ball joint like a doll I think because the neck is too thick on a horse, plus the neck should really be "ovular" and not a cylinder.
