BEN’S TOP 10 TRAVEL BITS:
I recently traveled with some of my best friends around Europe. We did London, Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam and Croatia. Here are 10 things I learned this trip.
1. Pack light. I only packed a carry on (2 pairs of pants, 2 shorts, tees, sweatshirt and shoes) and it was brilliant. Before you go, re-pack 3 times and take shit out every time. You can always pick something up if you need to but there’s something incredibly freeing about traveling around the world with a small bag.
2. Travel with your good friends. Not too many, 2 or 3. We were with a group of 7 for a while and it was tough to coordinate. Tavel with a few best mates but be sure to take off by yourself for a while.
3. Say yes to everything. Try it for a day, it’s good stuff.
4. Go to Berlin in the summer. It’s the best city in the world.
5. Rent bikes or scooters wherever you go. It’s the best way to see a city.
6. If you’re with friends, stay in apartments found on airbnb.com. You feel as though you’re a local in the city. I’ve done hostels but this was just as cheap, nicer and more fun.
7. Talk. If you see a guy or girl that you like, go talk to them, every time. This goes for anytime actually. I recently made a rule that if I see a girl and think to myself, ‘i should ask for her number’, I have to do it. What’s the worst that can happen? She says no. Then you know and you don’t regret it later.
8. Don’t worry about the post travel blues. It happens every time you come back to your regular day to day. It passes.
9. Back up your photos as you travel. You’ll loose your camera/iPhone.
10. Go with the flow. The best part about my travels was the mentality I had while on the road. Every obstacle was seen as an adventure, every person met had the potential to be my best friend, every opportunity was taken, every answer was yes. Magic happens when you’re spontaneous. It made for the best month of my life and reminded me of how to live back home.
Traveling reminds you how big the world is and how small your problems are. It also has a funny way of reminding you how short life is.
Book your next trip. They’re fun to look forward to.
Day One: very nervous on starting but excited at the same time. Had a cup of coffee to start off the day after waking up at 0330. Worked out in the morning outside by speed walking since one of my soldiers couldn’t do any sort of workout. Downed my first bottle of water out of three by breakfast. Breakfast was bacon, scrambled egg whites, brown rice with a little gravy and cantaloupe.
Lunch: pasta with tomato sauce, uncooked carrots, string beans and potato soup with the second bottle of water
Dinner: beef stroganoff with spinach and carrots with the third bottle of water
2nd Workout at the gym with a protein shake to end it
So tired from the day that I crashed hard after I showered.
Dream:
Coming back to Point Loma as an Alumni only to meet up with a family at a house nearby trying to gather up money (cash money) to pay for their child’s tuition in person rather than using the technology route (paying with credit card) because they don’t want to deal with the fees of the middle man (PayPal, Venmo, Heartland ECSI). I see stacks of bills on a table centralized in the middle of the room. As they gather and talk about how ridiculous the price of tuition is, I hear the sounds of Retreat as if I’m on post. I stand in attention and salute (typical of me). As soon as it’s over, I see two hipster teens dragging the colors on one end and letting the other end drag on the ground as if they have no care for what the flag represents. I run over screaming at the top of my lungs pick up the flag, fold it properly and asking them why they would disrespect our country’s flag. They run away because they are scared of someone screaming at them (typical snowflake). It’s funny how, while I was yelling, the family from the formentioned story were watching and told everyone else in the group “Hey, watch this” in amazement as if they knew I was in the military and seeing someone with passion for their country would “express themselves” in the form of knife hands.

Done after PT. This is day 19 of the 22 Day Pushup Challenge in recognition of Veteran’s Suicide Prevention to raise awareness for our military veterans This happens daily since studies show, we lose 22 veterans everyday. So please reach out to those around you. I nominate @celine.amber13 to accomplish this easy but daunting feat. The rules are simple: ***Once you are nominated your 22 days start the following day. *** Every day you record yourself doing 22 push-ups for 22 days straight. Do them in any way you can. *** Every day you must nominate a different person. *** And finally, have fun with this. This is a simple and interactive way to get the word out about a matter that we must continue to shed light on this matter. Remember, No matter the problem you are dealing with, there is support available. Connect with resources and treatments for overcoming suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
