Hi Anon! I know it’s been a few days, so sorry for the delay. I’ll do my best to answer your questions now. :)
I’ve wanted to try modeling from the time I was really young, but I always had a million excuses not to do it. I thought I was too thick or not pretty enough or I was poorly located or modeling would diminish my ability to be “taken seriously” as an artist. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that excuses don’t get you very far and you just end up regretting not taking chances on the things you really want to do.
How I started modeling is actually kind of interesting, but I don’t recommend this route to anyone. My first time modeling was at a casting call. I didn’t know how to hold myself, I didn’t how to work with the light, and I was so nervous that my knees were shaking and to say my smile was strained would be an understatement. Of course, the nature of this kind of casting call is that it all happens really fast. You have five minutes max to give the scouts a convincing photoset. The images I shot were pretty dreadful and, for a while there, I thought that it meant I wasn’t cut out for modeling because I was laboring under the illusion that it just comes naturally.
Modeling is just like any art skill. You can start with some natural ability, but you have to put in the time, study images, learn your angles, learn lighting, learn how to work in different poses and movements. The trick with modeling is that when a model is really really good, she makes it look effortless and you’re completely unaware of all the time she’s spent honing her craft.
Once I realized this, I started practicing with local photographers and building my own portfolio. I’ve been working on that for just under a year now. I’ve recently started applying for agency representation.
The kind of work I’m interested in? Well, ideally I’d be producing work like you see on this blog. I really want the chance to work with some professional teams for professional clients and to make high quality work. I’m interested in fashion, glamour and art photography that is classic, moody, and a bit edgy. Will I get there? Time will tell.
