Thats one of my goats!
One of our students, after my month of teaching animation, spoke to the class; she would come up to my co-teacher and me to ask for feedback. I had taken to asking the students "what do you think?" when they asked me for feedback. I wanted to know their preferences, what bothered them in their art and what they prioritized, and I wanted to help them push those preferences to, hopefully, find themselves. I had an internal rule of giving explicit advice only on technical aspects of their art (should they even need it), or if they needed help to get somewhere they clearly had mapped out. That girl mentioned it was the first time anyone had ever asked her "what do you think?" in regards to her art. (insane, because she practically needed no guidance, only encouragement.) She cried when she told us and explained to us it had fundamentally changed her way of approaching art. Most of this was due to my co-teacher, who early on mentioned he liked my approach and supported it (and went along with it). Kinda had to hold back a tear when she gave her speech. Highly rewarding month of teaching!
I'm going to delete this tumblr soon... see margot.maison and this blog for artwork. Thanks!
(Fromsoft artwork is mostly on this site and my pixiv account.)

Sorry I come on here to write bullshit once in a while now cause it has to go somewhere, even if it isn't entirely coherent.
Thinking of eloquence as something all-encapsulating in expression. Much like a word can be used with clarity and precision, so can a note, a line and an idea. I believe that art in most forms is as expressive as language is, I believe it is it's own language. as a certain placement of lines is me solidifying internal feelings that are felt by those who look upon it. So do sounds in a song amplify and distort the meaning of lyrics or conjure their entire own worlds in instrumental music. I see a direct connection between bland and uninteresting art and (a form of) intelligence, willing or willingness to sympathize with others as a consequence of that. We have cultivated systems that prioritize lowest-common-denominator art, which leads us to prioritize "being heard" over "speaking". Making us less investigative to both ourselves and each other. To misunderstand a complicated work, but to want to understand it is enriching. This year, culturally, has been disappointing to me. Can't think of a movie I loved, every videogame has a hate campaign raised against it because they arent tailor-made to their demographic (usually, when reading their demands they also read as "make x old game again and do not show me anything new"). And a ton of indie games are direct amalgamations of old games. Often either straight remaking or simply puzzling certain parts of old games and genres together. People seem to be prouder, less curious and dumb. Throw off the shackles of nostalgia and look inward as to what speaks to you about the things you love. As far as there being "no new", that is something more closely related to wanting to be heard than it is to "everything having been done". Everyone has internal worlds and ideas. If you are willing to rid yourself of external validation you can find what it is you have to say, and you should. You might not ever be able to do so entirely clearly but the journey there is rewarding in and of itself.
Little animation I was commissioned to do
I bumped this up to 2.5 stars since at about the midpoint, during a car chase, this movie really hits its stride and becomes pretty funny. U
I wrote this review of hoppers a couple days ago. In retrospect I think it's actually optimistic and generous to the movie. If any of you have seen, Nvidia just dropped DLSS5. Essentially an AI filter laid on top of video games. I commented on it, because I strongly dislike it, on youtube and twitter. I instantly had some replies about how some devs might like a realism filter on top of their work. I believe this. I'll be clear about this; if you believe art is expression, which I STRONGLY believe, DLSS5 is a tool that alters that expression. Artists know the restrictions they work within and design within. There is a genuine discussion to be had about wether or not games are art (I don't believe they are) as there was (is) one about wether movies even are. When is the last time you have interacted with art that made you uncomfortable? Probably been a while, because the oligarchy isn't just spending money in politics. The Marvel decade of people pleasers has been detrimental because of the same reasons. In Belgium I was silently let go, I believe, in part because of vocally speaking up against a zionist at work. Who was kept on. Why? Because mentioning the genocide was disruptive. Film (and games) are run more by money men and made to be sold; what does that mean? They are not meant to express something raw and unfiltered, they are meant to confirm biases you already have. While I'm obviously nuanced and know there is a place between art and product, we are heavily leaning towards the latter. The industry is not interested in what you have to say, it's interested (at most) in what you want to hear and even more than that it would like to control what you want to hear. For example, in Hoppers, if a ruler wants to take over occupied land, he needs to be understood instead of removed, reasoned with. The way games look should be under the control of Nvidia, who clearly cares for the people, as we can see from their data centers and expensive low vram Gpu's. So yes, I do believe some people like a realism filter on their work, because the people who are mainly and only interested in doing the grunt work; not to think, not to express anything but merely to be creating something that fits the money-man's desires are popular. They get hired, they don't ask questions, they just do as they are told. They are tools.
If there is any time to make work, maybe not just drawings, but expressive works. Now is the time, I will love you dearly for doing so.
Was at a museum recently and really didn't like it. Modern art curated by an out of touch elite, either for said elite or for tourism. Old cultural pieces from Asia and Africa that were, outside of wether or not they *should* be in a museum at all, also presented outside of the context they were supposed to be in, robbing them of their meaning and function. Then drove off to a gallery in LA mainly consisting of photos aestheticizing the crumbling architecture of poor LA. Videos of Driving around LA, presented IN LA. Very uninteresting. Could not find myself to see the point. I Felt out of place, honestly. I don't even think I'm that woke lol, it just sucked.
Actual drawing with the digital color printed on glass, part on back and part on the front.
Drew this a year and a half ago and never posted it but I posted it on IG recently and people liked it there, so!

What is integral to your artistic development, especially in the age of AI?
Think of what art is; above all, art should be expressive. I don't just speak about technical quality, or skill. I speak of expression. Think of how you talk to someone else. Think of what you say with your body language, your posture, by what you choose not to say and how you do so without a thought. Honestly and subconsciously. Think of how a word in and of itself is a predefined symbol to express a feeling, how that word is open to interpretation. Consider how limited that is. Art allows you to express beyond those words. Essential to that expression is that honesty, in order to be honest you should follow specifically your instinct. If you see a piece of art that speaks to you it is worth to consider what specifically about it speaks to you, when you draw and you don't like something about that drawing it is important for you to consider what it is you don't like about it. I put the emphasis on you because we navigate networks that drive us to not consider ourselves; a piece of art is posted to a network where it is judged by others using highly detailed metrics. These metrics trigger a dopamine response in us, making us addicted to considering the network and others' validation in our art. Follow that impulse and you are considering how to please either the network or as many other people as possible. What do you lose in that impulse? That specific honesty and expression. You could still be talented and good, but you lose your expressiveness and honesty. Internally I keep calling this "product (or content I guess)" versus "art" In doing so you lose your eloquence, you stop expressing these hyper specific feelings, you lean more into broadly recognizable patterns that please rather than challenge. I think this leads to us being not just incurious, but also isolated. If our art at large stops to be willing to be so specific and open in it's expression, we stop being curious and understanding. Think about where most conversation takes place, in how little text, how far away from others. Think about a Marvel / Studio dominated decade and a half of movies. The popularity of K-pop (when was, say, Bjork on the radio for the last time?). Yet at the same time, I was walking through a plaza in LA with my wife, and I was looking around me; I was looking at signs, buildings, architecture. All things I would consider "products", yet everything speaks. The signage was made by someone, just as someone speaks with their body language the Denny's logo said something. So did it's architecture. So did the Boba-shop and my mother in law's salon. I look at the grime and the regulars and it communicates. I look at the pieces of fanart, which I consider "product" more than expression (unless you are, say, Margot Ferrick) and I see your linework and preferences. AI takes these and works in a system of averages. It's its job. No longer can you put in explicit intent, but more important than that, gone is subconscious intent. In a very literal sense the soul is sucked out of whatever it produces. There is a complete absence of meaning, nothing to understand. Whatever I see in it relates to nobody and nothing, optimized as a "product" even more generalized through algorithmic averages. I believe this directly furthers incuriosity and even a loss of intelligence. It can not say anything profound, nor show it to you. All it says has already been spoken, all it does is remove the unintentionally spoken from it. Value your own instinct, even if you do not want to speak, realize that you are speaking. Do not give into mere aesthetics, be considerate of them. AI is not new, these networks already existed, your human hand is essential, do not give it away to an algorithm of any sort. We all want to understand and to be understood. Learning your specific preferences is it's own sort of mastery and it's own sort of eloquence. If you create, you should channel honestly, even if you are just aesthetically predisposed you will be expressing something. to lose expression is to lose your soul.
Highguard interesting example of "AI was already here" it was just chasing lowest-common-denominator artstation design. Follow instincts unique to yourself.
Hard to put into words but have been thinking alot of the difference in approach of "how things should be", which is often correct but unsympathetic and unproductive, versus "how things are (with an eye on improvement)". Not to bring back Avatar again, but it's approach to the white savior trope feels like a pretty significant example. Saw a meme of Neytiri as "woke leftist" and Jake as "colonizing rightwinger" that misses the point entirely. The inciting incident of colonization does happen and the white protag is specifically chosen here, simply saying "this is bad and things like this shouldn't happen" completely loses touch with the very real moment we find ourselves in (a colonized world that is still colonizing) , as the film is a conversation with us specifically. As we did colonize, we find ourselves in a very similar moment and solidarity is a more productive way to get where we do need to be. Took this as a basic example, but I see this kneejerk reaction way more often and I think it would be productive to be conscious of the "conversations (stories, interactions, etc)" you are missing out on by reacting that way. I'm speaking very train of thought, but people similarly speak in morally righteous way where it is also more productive here to pay attention to how one acts, and what ones values are in their actions rather than their words, pay attention to what a film is trying to say, rather than what it shows on it's face layer.
