4. Stand-Up Comedy Clubs

The Myrtle Beach area has lots of choices for comedy & entertainment. If you’re looking for one that won’t break your bank, consider one the following two clubs, which are dedicated to stand-up comedy.

Carolina Comedy Club

Our favorite is Carolina Comedy Club, a small but well set-up comedy club that doesn’t put a lot of pressure on you to buy additional drinks or food, over your ticket price (usually around $12-$25pp, depending on the popularity of the comic). While comedy is subjective, most of whom we’ve seen here have been professional quality, even if it wasn’t our particular humor. Best of all, this club is a stones-throw to Broadway at the Beach bars & clubs for more fun (as long as its a Summer night, or a weekend during the off-season). While I’m sure you’re a bit sick of hearing about Broadway at the Beach from the other Myrtle Beach visiting sites, it does have some great night-life action in a small space. The comedy club is an important, if not an often overlooked, part of this area.

Comedy Cabana

Comedy Cabana often has specials which reduce its cost of a ticket (or completely eliminates it), but requires a two item minimum, so its hard to say exactly how much you’ll pay. According to their website their normal ticket price is usually between $15-$20 (may be more if the act is really popular). If you factor in the price of the two items you may pay at least $5 more on top of that, likely more if you buy food or alcohol. Still though, all that aside, the people are always very nice & the space feels very intimate & gives the entire spotlight to the comic (instead of being a loud bar where the comic has to compete with distractions, like some places). For those reasons, we say it is worth the price and is not a bad way to spend a night. You must be 15+ to enter, accompanied by an adult until your 18yrs old.

Top 20 Things to Do in MB: #4 VARIETY SHOWS UNDER $30

While live shows should be no surprise to you in MB, a night of entertainment under $30 per person just might be! The following are variety style shows that you won’t have to go into debt to attend:

Carolina Improv

A new show every night, Carolina’s Improv’s players will take your suggestions and turn it into comedy gold. With a success rate of laughter that rivals the most successful scripted show, you’ll be amazed at how much can be made out of a few simple keywords, when inspiration is ignited before your eyes. This club makes the most of an extremely small stage and gives big laughs on Weekend nights and sometimes on weekdays, too (check for show times). Most shows are fun for the whole family. Once per week, they also will do a 18+ show, which is only mildly more “adult”, naughty not nasty.Tickets sell out, order online. $12 online & $15 at the door.

GTS has “Got The Shows” for you, a live theater which nightly showcases singing talents doing their best to get you into a nostalgic fit. Their flagship show, Motor City Musical: A Tribute to Motown is a funky and hip revue of all your favorite Motown hits sung with a tremendous amount of soul and authenticity. Depending on the time of year you visit you should also check out their tributes to the 1960′s and 1970′s or catch their respectful counter Christmas programming, The Redneck Christmas Show. We like their price the best, only about $30 after online discount (sometimes you can even find it cheaper during non-peak times of year). Our favorite show is the 1970′s show, which was full of dance music and a great arrangement of singer/songwriter choices. Motown, their most popular is an easy crowd pleaser. Everything they do is a lot of fun. You can’t go wrong.

Top 20 Things to Do in MB: #3 SQRAMBLED SCUARES GAME SHOW (yes its spelled like that)

No, that’s not a misspell, its a play on how the game is played, by unscrambling the letter squares to reveal the answer. The long running, regionally aired, game show (perhaps the longest local gameshow in TV history) tapes episodes nearly every Thursday evening in North Myrtle Beach & you and your family can attend FOR FREE! Not only do you get to see the taping of a real life game show, you also can (and usually do) win prizes just for sitting in the audience, things such as free dinners and show tickets. Everyone in the audience gets treated to free brownies, cookies, sodas and juices. Lastly, they choose the two contestants who will be ON-CAMERA from the audience, randomly selected from those who fill out a simple form. With only about 50 seats available, you should get there early, right when they open about 6:30pm for the 7pm show start. Taping usually takes about an hour. They don’t try to sell you on anything or have any ulterior motives... it really is FREE FUN IN MYRTLE BEACH. Check out the show on their YOUTUBE CHANNEL for an example of how to play, in case you get selected. It has been in North Myrtle Beach for years, but is currently on hiatus until they find a new location. Check out the old episodes and send them a message of encouragement (or even sponsor an episode).

2. Duplin Sweet Wine Tasting - $5pp

Duplin Winery is the top selling sweet winery of the south and they started just a couple hours north in Rose Hill, NC. Well, in 2015 they opened up a second location for low cost wine tastings in North Myrtle Beach, close to where the family used to vacation when the winery started in the 1970s. Duplin winery is a large scale operation where, for $5-$10 per person, you can taste test 10 different wines & get the complete history of how you get amazing wine creations from the North Carolina state grape, the wild sweet muscadine. If you chip in for the $10 ticket (or join their wine shipment club like we did) you can get another glass of wine. If you join the club, you’ll get three bottles of wine sent to you every three months in all available states; and, as a major bonus get a free glass of wine for you and a friend every single day you decide to come back and visit. Not only is Duplin a very cheap, fun deal but they have successfully made their tastings of wine, jelly, BBQ sauces and more an EXPERIENCE that every local and tourist should make as a regular part of their Myrtle Beach time. Kids & those under 21 can have NON-alcoholic wine if they wish. They are very kind and will do their best to make sure you have a great time.

Top 20 Things to Do in MB: #1 BROOKGREEN GARDENS     & ZOO

Thousands of people visit this attraction every year, but so few of the brochures will tell you about it because they don’t think tourists will be thrilled by the wonderfully manicured and luxurious gardens, the walk in bird terrarium (where you can walk among dozens of species of birds in their natural habitat), the history of the amazing true story of the slaves who worked on the land and the family that originally owned the property… they’re wrong… the highly curious average tourists will love it.

My favorite part was the bird terrarium, which is something out of Jurassic Park. You’re in the tent with full scale, beautiful birds that will interact with you. Be sure not to bother them because while they are mild they are still wild, but I can’t imagine a better place to take your children to get an understanding of what its like to be in their natural habitat.

If that weren’t enough, you can take the river cruise for an extra fee. There, you will see real alligators in their natural habitat swimming around the boat while you watch from the safety of your seat. While locals are used to being around these beautiful creatures, out-of-towners will enjoy the close, but not too close, aspect of this experience. At the same time, you’ll be able to learn about the slaves that once worked the fields and even see the last remnants of the original house. Ticket costs are about $25 per person, but it will be entertainment and discovery for an entire day… way better than five minutes in a mirror maze elsewhere (no offense). Check out Groupon for tickets as they often go on sale if you know to look. Every ticket enables you to visit multiple times, so just in case you don’t get a chance to see it all, or want to do an add-on walking tour, you can come back into the park for the same price.
